You're 100% right its all the little details that really make the movie so memorable. How they hide their guns when getting on the train, the ads on the subway car, the echo of the gunshots in the tunnel, and so much more. It's a skill to make so many characters stand out with such little screentime. You feel like you know every single one of the hostages personally just through their clothes and little character moments. Truly an expertly crafted film.
I saw this movie at the theater when it came out. I still remember how crazy it sounded that someone hijacked a subway car? In New York? The ending is the best.
A terrific film and should have turned more heads at the academy awards. Even though Godfather 2 was somewhat better this film was oscar worthy as well PERIOD!!!!!

I already have the DVD , also commented on the great actors and Director Joe Sargent .It will go down as a classic and loving that old New York .
