The small bore saved expensive powder compared to a real cannon. Seamen like farmers liked saving money where possible. PS today is Pearl Harbor Day, so some kind of blast follow the tradition.

....So i understand there's an airliner that 's got a golf ball size dent in underside of the fuselage and that the pilot heard a thud at 30,000 feet. it's all becoming clear now. LOL.
A friend of ours who runs a physics dept at a prestigious college brought us 3 cannons to fire one life size then the other 2 would fit on your desk they all rolled complete setups we painted the leAd ball orange for the big one dumped an insane amount of powder into the barrel we never did find that ball last I heard it was going over Maine haha good stuff fun on the farm there's nothing like it
At my last job we used a piece of 6-8 inch pipe bout 3-4 feet long. Welding one end solid, bored a small hole in the pipe at the end, stuffed shop rags in the open end, and constantly filled acetylene gas into the pipe, after awhile, take a long lighted stick or lighter and BOOM!!! Was quite funny when it was done and no one knew what was happening LOL Safer than what peeps would think.
i think belgium has had more bombs blown up in it than any other place on earth....i have been there and have seen some of the WWI museums and footage of the trenches.. wow what an amazing place to see..

i was just out to my pole barn & i heard some thing hit the tin roof i ran outside wondering what it could of been then i see this golf ball sitting on grass now i know where it came from ..................lol
We used an old steel post driver(3" seamless tubing with2.5" id and a 6" solid slug welded in one end) and used the old M-80's from the '60's. Had an old rolling pin with one handle broke off that never got fixed, we could shoot that out of sight straight up. It probably went 1000 yd on a 45 deg. angle. But it is dangerous if not careful. One kid in a neighbor town had a cannon that shot 'D' batteries- some one was killed with a battery thru them. Most used the powerful old m-80's dropped in from the top. They are no where near as powerful now. The firecracker doesn't give you much time, after a few close calls we quit.

Reminds me of the time I made a cannon from a piece of bronze round stock that was about a foot long and 3 inches in diameter. One New Years eve I had it loaded with 6 ounces (measuring cup) of IMR 3031 gunpowder, then a dry piece of newspaper alternating with a damp piece until I had it completely to the end of the barrel, take into consideration that I lived in a subdivision at the time, I lit it, and usually when it fired, it would make a teardrop shaped flame from the muzzle, this time it made a mushroom shaped flame and when I went to look for the cannon afterwards, it was gone, but found pieces of it the next morning, one was in the neighbors swimmming pool which destroyed the liner, another had hit my house right along side the double glass door about head high and about a foot from where my head was, it had shattered the brick that it hit and about 3 months later, a cop came to the house and asked if I had a cannon, I told him I had one but didn't at the moment. He asked what mine was made of I told him it was Bronze and he then asked me what kind of metal was was gold in color I told him it sounded like brass, he then opened his trunk of the cruiser and took out a chunk and sure enough it was part of my cannon which had punctured the roof of a neighbors house almost a block away and due to the thawing of the ice it had laid on the ceiling drywall and after getting wet from the fairly large hole in the actual roof from the thawing of snow and ice had finally fallen through the drywall and onto the kitchen table. Needless to say that was one very expensive firing of the cannon, which I'll never have another again. Like you a littl powder makes a big Boom, I wanted a super Boom and it did but in turn had created a Pipe bomb instead which had created a lot of expenses for me. LOL
By the way the bore of that cannon was large enough to allow a .825 diameter ball bearing to be used as a projectile, so be careful of the type of powder you use and how much used.
Nortekj Your problem was too much projectile, it sealed the bore, and that didn't allow the gasses to escape.... If you look at any cannon episodes recorded in the past (or present), besides overloading with charge, you must also watch out for overloading with shot. When you filled the barrel with wet/dry newspaper, you created a paper mache shot that sealed the bore too much, and weighed too much. When enemy guns were captured, and not going to be taken over, they would destroy them, usually by extra charge, in combination with extra shot. but a superubundance of either will destroy your gun, yes, turning it into a large pipe bomb. There is a degree of experimentation with cannons, to see exactly what their capabilities are, but you should have known the limits of your gun, and stayed within them. I can reasonably state, that your negligence is your responsibility, any gunner should know his gun, wether a side arm, or mortor, or 100 lb rifled cannon, etc..., and any gunner should know that filling his barrel with anything to the tip, would not make it safe to fire..... By the way, even if you filled the barrel with a long ballon, and filled that with water (so as not to soak the charge), you probably would have split your barrel at the minimum.....
I know what caused the rupture, I wasn't thinking too well that night (too much holiday spirits, namely Booze) LOL Which initself is no excuse but it happened and I paid the price for my stupidity. That happened about 50 yrs ago when I was younger and full of Pee and vinegar, on top of acting idiotic as well LOL
