If you've followed the PLANTSTRONG Podcast, no doubt you're familiar with Robby Barbaro, one of the founders of Mastering Diabetes and now, an official IRONMAN triathlon finisher!
If you don’t know, an IRONMAN is a one-day triathlon where you swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a marathon! Crazy, right?! It's even more awesome since Robby did it as a plant-based, Type 1 diabetic!
In this episode, Rip and Robby talk about how he trained, fueled, and monitored his glucose during training and racing. They also talk about his mindset and training process, because he essentially started from ground zero as a triathlete.
As Robby says, you can always become a happier and better version of yourself and that’s exactly what he did. He found an area in his life he wasn’t happy with, and sought to make big changes.
We invite all of you to do it too, no matter what your goals happen to be. (and believe me, it doesn’t have to be an IRONMAN!)

I'm just now seeing this podcast and it was an answer to a prayer! I am a Type 2 Diabetic, and during the first couple of weeks of going Plant Based, my sugars were testing between 150 - 250. I was so worried I would not be able to do this, but Robby answered my question. My body was not used to eating more Carbs....even the healthy ones. Once I added more Plant Based Protein, like tofu, beans, and lentils, my sugars started to go down and I was loosing weight. Whew! Thank you so much!

bobby's so intellectual and really on top of it - and this setting really shows. II see waht rip is saying about in person vs zoom - there's more nuances that allow the conversation to flow better. Give and take.

I always love what robby eats. So glad you asked the most pressing question! His food's always the freshest, best tasting, best smelling, and cleanest foods you can come by - that's goals! The only thing I add to fruit and leaves is flowers. Flowers are high in carbs! The issue is that the USDA doesn't measure flowers much - so that's probably why he doesn't eat them as much.

Tells you what additional tests you need to ask for if you are underweight and your DR. Diagnoses you with Type 2 or pre diabetes.

I wish you could find someone on the plantbased community to talk about gestational diabetes. I'm going through it right now and finding it very hard to find reliable plantbased info on it.

that's a pretty good question. There's a channel I found that's on my personal website - it's called the chic natural on youtube. They have a pregnancy eating video, but maybe they have post-pregnancy stuff?

This is soooooo cool! Congrats, Robby! I did my first 70.3 a few weeks ago! Question for you - what type of coconut water? Like what brand, etc.? Also, is your coach plant based? I’m on a team and I find myself a little on my own to figure out nutrition. I did great on nutrition for Memphis except I over hydrated on the bike and stopped a million times on the run to pee! I’m so excited to follow your IM journey! Go get it!

I drink the pink stuff - the harmless harvest one. The big bottle - no rinky dink. I live in the mountains where I get severe body cramps - that's the only thing that removes them during summer. All the others - not so much. I like coconut beach brand after that - but it's too watery. It's more for feeling clean inside and calming than muscle relaxing.
