A Day At The IRM Featuring Shay 5 Switching 8/29/20

- I came for 4506, but got a whole lot more.
Today we made a journey out to IRM originally just to get some shots of Rock Island 4506 powering the coach train. But then I got a tip from a friend that Shay 5 was going to be preforming some switching jobs around Barn 9, which meant she was going to switch out some of the steam engines inside the barn such as ATSF 2903, CB&Q 3007, and Public Service #7, which made for an amazing sight! It is amazing that a small shay locomotive like that can pull a massive 4-8-4 around
It’s because ATSF 2903 has Roller Bearings which’s makes it easier. The one that was the challenge was 3007 because that one does not have roller bearings.
@@matthewgustafson5225 and because geared locomotives are built to hold the rail no matter what
A small Shay can pull an amazing load, just not very fast!
@@matthewgustafson5225 3007's got rollers as well, seemingly with the exception of the rear axle on the front tender truck. The giveaway are the bearing covers. The majority are bolted on and say TIMKEN on them whilst the one plain bearing one is a standard journal box that's able to be opened more readily and easily.
I have an Idea would CB&Q 3007 be steamed for the Burlington and the IRM.

What is the plan with #975?

Before this video I thought that Shay has pistons on both sides... The more you know I guess.
I’d actually be proud if whistles were changed. 1630 especially. Like to hear what 975’s whistle actually sounds like. Same with GN&A 26, CBQ 4963, and RI 938s whistles as well.

i think the irm should try to restore the 3007. It would be really cool to see a working hudson
I have heard 3007 is in poor mechanical shape. If a Hudson were to be restored, there’s several other options
@@blackbirdgaming8147 agreed. personally, i think the c&o 490 would be a really good choice because it’s (to my knowledge) the only streamlined hudson left
@@harrison444 490 would be a poor choice due to its complex and problematic valve gear. A better choice would be one of the CB&Q Hudsons, just not 3007.
