    Mike, I had almost this exact issue in a bus once. It idled, and drove fine around town, but as soon as I got on the freeway requesting max power it would just die and fall flat on its face.
    I eventually found that it was a chunk of trash, stuck in the carb fuel intake before the float valve. At low flow, the piece would not obstruct the gas, but as soon as the flow increased, it would plug it up solid.
    You could not see the clog from the outside, and the bowl was clear. But once you remove the needle valve in between the nipple, and the top of the valve was where the clog was.
    Probably a longshot, but worth a look.

      @Mikefngarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yea I had that problem but every time I check the needle to see if it is getting plugged it is totally clear.

    Ah the plight of a vintage VW owner. Been dealing with mine for close to 2 years now after being away from them amlost 10 years. Living in Hawaii in middle of nowhere makes it even more fun. You fortitude and persistence is the foundation for getting where you want to be. Keep at it, VW community is there for you esp. In So. Cal. I miss my vw stores and Mexican food. Love your channel and kniw youll nail it.

    I had a rusty fuel line on my ranchero and it just kept flaking off and pluging up the main jet. Stalled alot mostly hills lol. New fuel line fixed it. Just kept having to clean the carb really sucked. Love the steering wheel on that oval. Thanks

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      yea they suck rust into the small orifice in the needle and seat on these plug up pretty easy. dont see anymore now. but it is possible.

    Hi Mike, enjoyed the video. It's always chasing gremlins when you get to this point with a restoration. Had my thinking cap on trying to figure out the solutions with you. Take care. Peace

    Thanks Mike. I got my Dad’s ‘75 Toyota PU. I got it to idle Ok. Was hoping to learn some body work this summer but just the engine idle was an accomplishment for me. You’re on a different level, what you accomplish.

    Test Drive Mike I think it's the fuel pump giving out or vapor locking..

  • @vayabroder729
    @vayabroder729 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, sir. That noise has to be loose head(s) if the exhaust is already kosher. Check the top nuts; just to think you had the longblock accessible when you took off and painted the cylinder head tins. Which is why I make a point to do all that whenever I have the motor out. That and the rear main seal as well as oil cooler seals.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think its the valves not seating all the way. seems to misfire when under a load. Not enough compression. Valves were all tight. so probably some somewhat burnt ones.

    • @vayabroder729
      @vayabroder729 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikefngarage And probably exhaust valves at that; they’re always the first ones to go.

    Needle and seat... The float needle can hang up in it's bore, because the surface of the bore has become rough. I saw a remedy on TH-cam that I have tried and it works. You take a common cue tip (for ears) and you put it in your drill like a drill bit. You then get some brasso (brass polish) and put it on the cue tip. You insert the cue tip into the bore and run the drill so as to polish the inside of the bore and the seat. You want to get it shiny if you can. This will prevent the needle from hanging up in the bore.

    Hey Mike ! I had to put starter brushes on a old starter to get it working and Auto Shack had them 4 for 10 bucks . They were to wide but this was not my first rodeo so I grinded them to fit . It would make a good video how to rebuild a VW starter . The Duralast parts # is BX 104 .

    Hey Mike, I had the same issue with my old barn find ‘56 bus, watching the video you can see the choke is coming on when you go full throttle, it needs lubing/freeing up so it doesn’t come on with the accelerator. You actually say it’s running rich, you almost guessed it

    There is dirt-build-up in the gas-pump, that limits the capacity. Had the same problem with my -69 Volvo 600 tractor. 👍

    Led's in the taillights would be the solution, - that goes especially for 6v systems !

    Mike, you are plagued with small stuff.? What’s the old saying, don’t sweat the small stuff, everything is small stuff?

  • @ocavant
    @ocavant ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don’t think it’s the pump. Take one of your GoPro’s and aim it at the fuel filter and then drive around and make the problem happen.
    Then you can see if the lack of fuel is between the filter and the tank or the filter and the carb.

    Hi Mike, my 65 bug did the same thing. It would die and after it sat away would fire back up. I tried everything, gave up and sold it to my brother who was good with electric. A couple days later he called me and the wiring to the curtousy like inside was melted and would ground out causing the engine to die somehow? Before it first happened I was camping with friends and it was 113 and the bug was directly in it.

  • @HoboHeaven
    @HoboHeaven ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why dont you tested it when it was outside? And then I would clean and paint the Parts after testing.

  • @jamesferrell9404
    @jamesferrell9404 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your fuel pump I say is causing some of the issues. And have seen coils once they get warm start getting a weaker spark or lose spark all together. And is it possible debri is in fins to cause it to get hot to fast?

  • @johanb.4636
    @johanb.4636 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It seems to me that you "resetted" the reminent magnetism of the generator by connecting it as an engine.

  • @TC-Henry
    @TC-Henry ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're down a cylinder. It was galloping when you were trying to start it too, which means you don't have compression on one or more of you cylinders

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea it is running on all 4 most of the time but when under a load it starts to miss because there is not enough compression in 1 cylinder.

  • @RollingThunder808
    @RollingThunder808 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If it miss under load it could be that the point gap is too wide.

  • @elfenmagix8173

    I'm more experienced with 70's Bugs but to me it could be one of 3 or 4 things.
    1) Highly doubt it - But you might have taken too many short cuts on the engine. You are too good for that. You bought back VWs from the Rust Grave! You're a VW Expert I can trust on youtube.
    2) Carb Icing? I had that issue going up hills on hot days in my 73s. But there was ice in the Carb and we had to wait for the ice to melt. I do not see ice here.
    3) Too hot for the engine? I had to baby my 73s when the temps in NYC went over 95 with high humidity. They had major problems in hot NYC weather. But Cold Winter in 3ft or snow? They ran like Huskies on a dog sled race!
    4) Bad Mojo. Car was in accident and somebody got killed? Or Bad deals done with the car? Get a priest (Catholic, Shinto, Buddist, Voo Doo, etc) and have that car spiritually cleaned. I had a Hearst long ago ('69 Olds Rear Loader - Same time as the Bugs) and I was told it had a lot of bad Mojo as things would go bad to those around it. Nothing happened to me but one day it was stolen. And in that theft, those who were involved were either permanently hurt or killed. Never saw that poor car again.
