Watching hot chips with tech tech potato a few years ago was a big part of why I ended up changing my career focus towards architecture. Its something I'd definitely recommend to any young person not sure what they want to do with their career.
I'm starting my ee this September! Cause having another degree never hurt anyone I guess lol.
Also, thanks Ian for all the inspiration

I love that some ancient hot chips talks are up on TH-cam. Its so interesting to see what was cutting edge in the 90s. It gives a new perspective to some of the computers I used as a kid.

Being passionate about computer science and working in the chemical industry, I can definitely appreciate the quality of the T-shirt you are wearing.

I’m literally moving to California during the days of the conference to start my PhD in analog and mixed-signal IC design at UCSD! Wish I could make it in person this year, always next year.

Out of all packaging videos here on TH-cam, the most deep diving and comprehensive to date I've seen is: ERI Summit 2020: Heterogeneous 3D Microsystems: Design, Fabrication, and Packaging
Hope to see some breakthroughs and solutions in this space that haven't been mentioned 3 years ago
In my opinion, this DARPA video is an excellent presentation of state where technology was in 2020, hope to see much more here

Calling Neoverse N-Series chips to be for networking is quite misleading I think. Having used them on Graviton 2, they are definitively competitors in the general compute space. Clearly more towards high numbers of cores, but still. Obviously N1 is of an older generation than Bergamo and won’t have the same performance, but the idea is still somewhat similar. More like one N core competes with one hyperthread, but at the time it also had the cores per socket to compare accordingly.
They‘re definitively well usable for your typical container workload environment.

Haven't been to a hot chips in person in almost 30 years, but it sounds like a good program this year. I'll probably catch it virtually. Happy to hear it all. Sad that some of the cutting edge stuff was predicted 30 years ago and is just making it closer to market now. It ain't fusion, for crying out loud... 😂

Haaa.. Got me. That's how I roll, learning about the strengths and weaknesses of each component and seeing how they interface with each other to be greater than the sum of their parts. Alas, the bigger picture is still not clear for to have that would be to understand more fundamentally how the whole system works, why it is efficient or where it is lacking.

I think hot chips has gone on long enough. Time for some cold chips, like 35w parts that can do 8ghz. And, 6ghz at 5 watts.

Looks like! Maybe just a few layers if it's agreeable to that as peeps find the exact material and how compatible with Si or GaAs or GaN etc. it is. Maybe packed with a split for cooling.

      I have notes.
° Why even say Coffeebreak if you're not going to say what brew or mushroom blend or chai or matcha you plan!?
° likewise why say 'talks' or '...that I have been talking about, I could do a ...' at all. Just enthuse on the topic or its open questions.
      ° Less flatly perhaps.
° AMD Neoverse is just in time for the relaunch of Neopets. But on servers. 🍜
° Wait no new materials? MoS as in molybdenum sulfide? No diamondene or epitaxial diamond stuff? New passivation?
      Have fun in Stanford.
