Thank you for the straightforward advice. I live in a small town in Australia, and choice of live fish often comes down to what the LFS has in stock on the day. If you see fish you like, and go back the next day, chances are they'll be sold already. I bought two juvenile Jewel cichlids today. Put them in with three juvenile Peacocks in a 50 gallon tank. None of the fish have been in the tank long enough to select their own territory yet. However, the Jewels were immediately aggressive when released. Three hours later they seem to have settled down. Hope it works out, the LFS has Jewel cichlids in with a breeding pair of Convicts and it has been ok for them.
I love these fish and have kept them for a while. They can be absolutely horrible little things though, especially if they pair up in a community. Probably the best species spotlight video on Jewels I've seen. Well done!
@@QuebecCichlides I'm breeding my democrat jewel cichlid with a democrat female salvini cichlid. Their babies will be moved to another tank at a certain size they will be paired and I will add 3 firemouths and 1 single male republican southern Missouri long ear sunfish

I have a old ten year old goldfish moving to a 20 gallon tank , I just bought a new airstone cause his old one is getting brittle and grungy. I have a hangover filter and want to make sure his new tank is 100% safe for my old boy. I've put in the recommended amount of aquasafe to neutralize the tapwater , let it run for 72 hours so it gets to room temperature and I put in the recommended bioclear. Is there anything I am missing
I’ve had 4 of them for 3 years and was told they are peaceful so I’ve always kept them in a community. Currently they’ve been living with 2 zebra loach, Corys, 2 roseline sharks, giant danios, rosy barbs, and now a bunch of sailfin molly. One jewel died earlier this year. They’ve never bred and I almost never see them. They just hide all the time so I thought they were peaceful now im super confused. Tank is 120 tall
I think most of the compatibility recommendations you mentioned would be the case if its a small tank. With a large enough tank where they have adequate territory, then they wont care. Also often aggressive cichlids are less likely to see smaller fish like Tetras as much of a threat. I've had zero issues keeping a pair of jewels in the past in a 120 gallon with a large school of black skirt tetra and a school of corys. So I think if they have space and they dont feel threatened, then they will not be aggressive. Of course breeding time they will be more aggressive but again, with enough space it might still be fine.
I love your videos, especially the 3 videos for mbunas, haps and peacocks where you listed down the genus in each group. Can you please make a similar video for predator haps? - Nimbochromis, Champsochromis, Dimidiochromis, Buccochromis, etc. Are these predator haps compatible in a regular hap+peacock tank?
Can you help me, i have been left a huge tank. Only one fish in the tank. Looks more like a fat snake with fins about 2metres long. Its orange under his head, black body with yellow spots. I went to feed these cubes and it must have been hungry. He swam up and jumped out, so I quickly picked him up and put it back in the water. It's really big and your channel deals with big fish. What do you feed them. Where can I learn a crash course on fish keeping. Thankyou.
Some of the confusion about the origin of the Jewel Cichlid may be related to the fact that there are escaped populations of them in warm water locations far and wide. Obviously they are somewhat common in Florida. I even saw a video about a geothermal site in Germany that has warm water surrounding it and there are Jewels there.
I'm having a HORRIBLE time with ammonia and nitrites in my jewel tanks. I have a 30 gal.and 40 gal.tank with one jewel each tank. I've done 50% water change, amonia pads, prime, tetra safe plus. Can you or any of your viewers help with advise?
