Roxanne I’ve leaned a lot from Becky at Acre Homestead on seed starting. I haven’t tried her soil recommendation of Vermont Compost with Neptunes Harvest organic fertilizer but I will this year. Both are sold on Amazon. I had success with grow lights and I’m adding heating pads this year as well as a fan to keep my plants from getting leggy. Yes I know , it's turns into beautiful rich loam , I couldn't believe Anthony was throwing the already bagged leaves out. I mow my leaves up with hand mower with a catcher, bag the chopped leaves and leave the black bags in the sun to break down the leaf litter. Pure gold.

I made a sieve with hardware cloth to fit over my wheelbarrow, to sift the soil clean of debris. Really improved my beds over the years, till I could work the dirt with my hands. I also would dump in soil from flower pots as well. Guess it's time to start planning what the garden will grow this year,.
Roxanne. seeds don't germinate just because you plant them in a greenhouse. A greenhouse needs heat, especially in the winter when you are trying to start seeds, Visit a local greenhouse now and pay attention to the amount of heaters they have going to jump start their seeds. The heat is needed especially at night when it is cold and turned down in the day when the sun is heating up the greenhouse. Talk to them for advice on heating your seed starts.
The greenhouse gets sun during the day which generates heat to provide enough during the day, and doesn’t fully wear off in the night. My local greenhouse does not use heat except keeping southern type of plants warm.
30 years ago or so I bought a leaf vacuum by black and decker. It mulched the leaves. I would go to my raked piles and vacuum them. Then I would create a mulch pile out of the mulched leaves. The volume of leaves is greatly reduced and you can use them for compost. No hauling them anywhere. My unit was corded electric. I used it and a replacement version over at least 3 decades.

it’s quite normal to be waving to people in the country in the city not so much. I don’t understand why that is. Roxanne when starting your seeds pre-moisten the soil then cover them up to keep the humidity up. Seeds can’t dry out or they won’t sprout.
Haven’t read all the comments so what I’m going to say most likely has already been written. The seeds are possibly becoming rotten. Seeds require little moisture to germinate. Also, your greenhouse will require a heat source for plants to survive the cold weather. We have enjoyed being along with you guys on your Arkansas adventure watching this channel and Daily Vibe. Also take your leaves and put a layer of leaves in between the clean out from the chicken coop and wet the pile down, and it will make compost faster. And every now and then take and turn it.
Cog Hill farm uses Vermiculite for starting from seed. He said the potting soil has added fertilizer which is not good for seeds. I never knew that. Then he transplants the small plant in vermiculite and potting soil. After that when big enough you plant in permanent beds. I never knew any of that but living in cold snowy Wis. I only had direct sowing in the garden after Mothers day and then the seeds sprouted. Big difference on how one gardens. He lives in Alabama. Believe towards the northern part or central.
Just leave the seeds and water them once in a while , they'll sprout when the ground reaches around 60 or 65 depending on the plants . It's good to winter them because some plants need to be wintered to sprout. So Don't give up on them . Just make sure to water them once in a while
Rox maybe bringing up your soil level in the flower beds will help the plants establish better roots. Also the greenhouse will be a great place to start your seeds this spring

Suggestion for keeping Ghost in the dog pen... Buy some white electrical fencing tape, 1/2 inch, and insulators. Run it around the inside of the pen, about 1/2 way up. Get a solar powered fence charger. Attach to fencing. The first time he climbs and gets shocked, that will be the last attempt more than likely. He might try a different spot, but the second attempt will stop it. He will figure out quickly to stay down off the fence as long as he can see that tape., The chargers come in various degrees of shock. An inexpensive Light duty solar charger is all you need. I used the white tape for my dogs around my raise beds and since they had already been shocked by the horse fencing (accidently) they had a healthy respect for any white tape. I didn't even have the tape electrified, they just assumed it was "hot". They wouldn't go in the raised beds even if a rabbit or bird was in it.
Thank you for sharing. Gardening is challenging, but once you get the hang of it, it repays. A channel I watch is Garden Answer, and she has a real easy form of teaching basics. Have you tried to use the clear covers, to keep the seeds moist? I haven't grown a decent carrot EVER, but I am not giving up. Stay warm.

In my greenhouse i have some heat and the humidity level is high in there. Sometimes the weather just gets too cold and my plants don’t do as well. But you need some source of heat to keep them warm constantly and then if you’re watering them often, that will help raise the humidity in there.
Starting seeds for me is hard as well. I soak any hard beans, okra and corn. That helps alot. Other stuff. I use a seedling mix. Wet real good and let drain. Plant seeds then cover with clear top or seran wrap till they sprout. Then take top off and mist lightly every day.
Hi guys! Roxane, I will say what worked for me, I too started seeds, what will help you most is putting plastic lids on your trays, this keeps the soil moist all the time. I think you will find they will sprout for you. If the soil dries out at all, they will never sprout. At least that worked for me. I set it in my kitchen window, watered in the morning, put the lid on and they were up in no time. I think the year I did that I got my supplies at Lowe's and Walmart. Course if it gets cold out there, you will need heating pads. Popz's is so awesome, he has helped so many of y'all there in Arkansas! Yes Anthony, that's one of the things I miss most about the midwest, just so friendly. Miss the small town vibe! When your young can't wait to get away, when your old, ya just want to go back. LOL
Hey Roxanne, maybe try seed starting mix, it's lighter weight than potting mix and has vermiculite in it to help retain the moisture. Also a humidity cover will work wonders for helping your seeds start sprouting. I have confidence in you that you'll get your groove with your greenhouse and you'll be having plants all over the place before you know it
Roxanne bougainvillea and mandevillia do wonderful and bloom all summer. I also like trumpet vines but they can become invasive. Mexican sunflowers are a beautiful orange color and easy to grow
On Green Acre homestead, Sam put a solar array in Eastern Tennessee. It's really nice. You might want to watch how he set it up. It was about a year ago.
My bed looks similar to yours. They can have extra boards for height as I get older. It won’t be so much bending just add on a few more boards and go higher has been built that one the same way.
I've visited Arkansas on vacation and even lived there for a short time. It is beautiful. Lots of small towns, makes it feel like home. Slower paced until you get to the big cities. Very nice place. I would move back if i could get my kids to move to....lol

Ant and Roxann start yourself a good composting pile. Use the leaves rabbit and chicken poop put in pile and turn it often. You just may need some good health food for your soil. Good luck and well wishes for 2025
Definitely a good idea. May have better luck with seeds with using your own compost but be sure it’s broken down good for at least a year or more so the animals manure has time to break down or it will be way too strong for the seeds.
I agree they need a smaller area to start composting. It has to be turned alot. Over time the big one will be ready. Start your seeds on a wet paper towel and put in baggies what is good will sprout in a matter of days. Then plant shallow in the soil. Tge thing w greenhouse is heat, humidity, you transplant alot to grow strong for in the beds.
❤ Most seeds need to be planted water them cover them in cling film for a week do not open or reopen until you see if they come up, they have to be kept in room temperature.also In the dark . Living in a small community is nice. I also live in a small cove of people who look out for you but mine their own business. Last winter the neighbor's snow blower caught on fire and their was about 5 people helping him out. It was nice to see people helping each other. Also going to the grocery store is a event. You talk to so many people.

Of course that's Colorado in the Country in the mid 70's But in 1989 In Pueblo Colorado They did the same thing for Papa Bunce's funeral procession.
Try this, I do it every spring and it works👍 Lay out paper towels, spread your seeds out on the towel, put another towel on top of them, sprinkle water until completely damp and put in a baggie flat. Leave in sun or warm area. They should sprout within 5/7 days👍 Goodluck. Your garden is always awesome 😉
Roxanne when you're planning your things they have to be kept warm when it gets cold or just once all together to take and get them to start so if you had a heater or something where you could put it out there to get that Greenhouse really hot and humid in there it might grow it means your seats may take off

I love gardening and which I could play into garden all year but it’s not possible here. I’ve tried greenhouse growing but your dirt needs to be 70f. I start my seed with paper towels or cotton ball. Soak the seeds and once they start to grow, transfer to warm dirt. Your black eye Susan spit seeds while flowering for next year flowers. And cosmo will also come back year after year they are #1 flower in an English garden. Wyatt, great job with the camera.
I. Use toilet paper to start wit seed starter and transfer them into the garden when the weather is not cold. The pan will deteriorate and also keep bugs away from plants roots. Because they can’t digest the paper and it good for earth worms. GOD’S BLESSING TO THE FAMILY.

Look for seed starting mix - it’s mostly vermiculite and peat moss, very little if any soil. Greenhouse Rox, any of the things, like older seeds, can cause the germination issues, but looking at the dirt you showed you need to get a seed starting mix, not potting soil. Too many sticks in that. Seed starting mix is peat, perlite and vermiculite. It holds moisture better and lets the little roots have something soft to grab onto and grow. Get some new seed and with the proper soil you should have more success!

Heib Rox, I’m not a great gardener but I have found that adding sand to my soil/ potting mix helped for seed starting as well as starting cuttings. The cuttings mix needed more sand than my seeds. It may be worth a try. I also don’t have the extreme cold or frosts to deal with. I lived in Victoria for the first 33 years of my life so had some experience in that variable weather. You could look at a solar heater for the hot house. Hi Ant, on the solar set up, have a look at ambition strikes channel as they have a decent system and live in a snowy winter climate. Worth looking at as they are engineers so researched well. Stay safe in the coming cold snap.
You can break the seed heads and sprinkle in the bed and lightly sprinkle soil over them so they dont blow away. Or you can dead head seeds and keep them to plant next season.

Some of us in Louisiana go to hot springs for vacation. Some go all the way to Branson, MO. Rox I think your soil has to stay around 70° for the seeds to germinate.
Seeds need heat in the winter and oxygen. Try the heat pads and a heat lamp at night. Also give them fresh air during the day when it is warmer. Your local nursery can also give you sound advice. Wishing you success on the next attempt. 🎉❤
We used the clear plastic on our chicken shed and it sure is nice and warm inside the building were in the Midwest . Maybe use the greenhouse if it gets too cold with the storm coming for the chickens

Place your seed in a damp paper towel placed in a baggie in the house. They should sprout. Good way to check viability 😊
I start in ice cream cones because they can just be planted into the dirt when ready, no need to take out of the cone.
You should put all those leaves in those flower beds and let them break down to help the soil.

FYI - I use the spaghetti sauce jars when I can things. Haven't had any fails yet. Also use pickle jars too. I'm considered a rebel canner.

I think my black eyed Susan vines were late in germinating this past year. They certainly were pretty when they started blooming.

When you keep your seeds, keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to use them. Also best thing to have is heritage seeds.

In my greenhouse i have some heat and the humidity level is high in there. Sometimes the weather just gets too cold and my plants don’t do as well. But you need some source of heat to keep them warm constantly and then if you’re watering them often, that will help raise the humidity in there.

Starting seeds for me is hard as well. I soak any hard beans, okra and corn. That helps alot. Other stuff. I use a seedling mix. Wet real good and let drain. Plant seeds then cover with clear top or seran wrap till they sprout. Then take top off and mist lightly every day.
Hi guys! Roxane, I will say what worked for me, I too started seeds, what will help you most is putting plastic lids on your trays, this keeps the soil moist all the time. I think you will find they will sprout for you. If the soil dries out at all, they will never sprout. At least that worked for me. I set it in my kitchen window, watered in the morning, put the lid on and they were up in no time. I think the year I did that I got my supplies at Lowe's and Walmart. Course if it gets cold out there, you will need heating pads. Popz's is so awesome, he has helped so many of y'all there in Arkansas! Yes Anthony, that's one of the things I miss most about the midwest, just so friendly. Miss the small town vibe! When your young can't wait to get away, when your old, ya just want to go back. LOL
Hey Roxanne, maybe try seed starting mix, it's lighter weight than potting mix and has vermiculite in it to help retain the moisture. Also a humidity cover will work wonders for helping your seeds start sprouting. I have confidence in you that you'll get your groove with your greenhouse and you'll be having plants all over the place before you know it

Always start you seeds indoors with a light/grow light. once they are strong enough when they sprout a few leaves "harden them up" in the greenhouse .
Roxanne bougainvillea and mandevillia do wonderful and bloom all summer. I also like trumpet vines but they can become invasive. Mexican sunflowers are a beautiful orange color and easy to grow

My bed looks similar to yours. They can have extra boards for height as I get older. It won’t be so much bending just add on a few more boards and go higher has been built that one the same way.
I've visited Arkansas on vacation and even lived there for a short time. It is beautiful. Lots of small towns, makes it feel like home. Slower paced until you get to the big cities. Very nice place. I would move back if i could get my kids to move to....lol
I use regular 4’ shop lights for seed starting & have them on timers, 14-16 hours a day.
I just love seeing the dogs enjoying the freedom of your property. Maybe harder to keep them under control but they’re not going to leave their cushy home. Thanks for loving all those precious souls. God loves you for helping to mind part of his flock

Ant and Roxann start yourself a good composting pile. Use the leaves rabbit and chicken poop put in pile and turn it often. You just may need some good health food for your soil. Good luck and well wishes for 2025
Definitely a good idea. May have better luck with seeds with using your own compost but be sure it’s broken down good for at least a year or more so the animals manure has time to break down or it will be way too strong for the seeds.
I agree they need a smaller area to start composting. It has to be turned alot. Over time the big one will be ready. Start your seeds on a wet paper towel and put in baggies what is good will sprout in a matter of days. Then plant shallow in the soil. Tge thing w greenhouse is heat, humidity, you transplant alot to grow strong for in the beds.

Living in a small community is nice. I also live in a small cove of people who look out for you but mine their own business. Last winter the neighbor's snow blower caught on fire and their was about 5 people helping him out. It was nice to see people helping each other. Also going to the grocery store is a event. You talk to so many people.

Try this, I do it every spring and it works👍
Lay out paper towels, spread your seeds out on the towel, put another towel on top of them, sprinkle water until completely damp and put in a baggie flat. Leave in sun or warm area. They should sprout within 5/7 days👍 Goodluck. Your garden is always awesome 😉

Roxanne when you're planning your things they have to be kept warm when it gets cold or just once all together to take and get them to start so if you had a heater or something where you could put it out there to get that Greenhouse really hot and humid in there it might grow it means your seats may take off

Def too cold for seeds to sprout. Seed start mats are what you need for sure. Even to start seeds for the spring, mats will ensure better germination.

I love gardening and which I could play into garden all year but it’s not possible here. I’ve tried greenhouse growing but your dirt needs to be 70f. I start my seed with paper towels or cotton ball. Soak the seeds and once they start to grow, transfer to warm dirt. Your black eye Susan spit seeds while flowering for next year flowers. And cosmo will also come back year after year they are #1 flower in an English garden. Wyatt, great job with the camera.
I. Use toilet paper to start wit seed starter and transfer them into the garden when the weather is not cold. The pan will deteriorate and also keep bugs away from plants roots. Because they can’t digest the paper and it good for earth worms. GOD’S BLESSING TO THE FAMILY.

Look for seed starting mix - it’s mostly vermiculite and peat moss, very little if any soil. Older seeds have reduced viability, seed storage requires specific conditions and even the pros will tell you that viability is reduced the older the seeds. Please look into Master Gardening courses through your County Extension Office. You would most likely enjoy the course and learning from other Master Gardeners in your area. Good luck 🍀

Try a heating pad they make them for seed starting
Greenhouse Rox, any of the things, like older seeds, can cause the germination issues, but looking at the dirt you showed you need to get a seed starting mix, not potting soil. Too many sticks in that. Seed starting mix is peat, perlite and vermiculite. It holds moisture better and lets the little roots have something soft to grab onto and grow. Get some new seed and with the proper soil you should have more success!

Heib Rox, I’m not a great gardener but I have found that adding sand to my soil/ potting mix helped for seed starting as well as starting cuttings. The cuttings mix needed more sand than my seeds. It may be worth a try. I also don’t have the extreme cold or frosts to deal with. I lived in Victoria for the first 33 years of my life so had some experience in that variable weather. You could look at a solar heater for the hot house. Hi Ant, on the solar set up, have a look at ambition strikes channel as they have a decent system and live in a snowy winter climate. Worth looking at as they are engineers so researched well. Stay safe in the coming cold snap.

You can break the seed heads and sprinkle in the bed and lightly sprinkle soil over them so they dont blow away. Or you can dead head seeds and keep them to plant next season.

Seeds need heat in the winter and oxygen. Try the heat pads and a heat lamp at night. Also give them fresh air during the day when it is warmer. Your local nursery can also give you sound advice. Wishing you success on the next attempt. 🎉❤
We used the clear plastic on our chicken shed and it sure is nice and warm inside the building were in the Midwest . Maybe use the greenhouse if it gets too cold with the storm coming for the chickens
