I pronounced it "My Lawn" as well. My grandpa had a few distribution stations for the Oregonian and they ran a new subscriber contest with a NES and games as a prize. I would go door to door in 80s Portland trying to get people to buy daily, Sunday, or daily/Sunday subscriptions. I remember my brothers and I got to pick 3 each. I looked at as many magazines articles and ads I could get my hands on and Milon's Secret Castle ended up being one of my favorites.

I'd like to see Acclaim next. They seem to be one of the more forgotten publishers; which is kinda odd when you take into consideration the fact that they were one of the "big 5" third party publishers of the 80s and 90s, along with Konami, Capcom, EA and Activision; all of which still remain in business while they don't.

    • @iami3rian394

Milon is a proto metroidvania. If it wasnt for the terrible no invincibility frame, it is actually fun. Less confusing map wise than the original metroid. It is the platforming and combat that is bringing it down. Once you get extra health and bigger bubbles it gets more satisfying when you get OP... but nobody made it that far back in the days.

Aww....Legacy of the Wizard. Years and years ago, a friend of mine challenged me to beat Legacy of the Wizard and he said I would be the "NES King" if I could pull that off. I literally mapped the entire game and spent a few months on it before finally beating the game. It was such a rewarding feeling. :) The key is to know which characters to use in each area of the game. Understanding the layout is huge too (not sure I could have beaten it without writing down a map!) The music is REALLY good too.

In Milon's Secret Castle there are secret doors, windows, walls, shops and invisible floors, it is ridiculously hard and with out hints makes it even worse, in XEXYZ which the original japanese famicom game is "Turtle's Repayment: Urashima Legend" (literally) they localized the story which makes no sense, like it happened with Blaster Master in the U.S.

Awesome!! Thank you for doing a Hudson Soft video, John! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and I feel like my personal ratings are *very* close to yours. So many of these games are immensely nostalgic and Hudson Soft made some hidden gems that I didn't play until the early 00's (Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu for one...that game is SO fun). I don't know if I would rank any of them as "S" (although Felix the Cat and Adventure Island III might have a shot) but most of their games were superb. I owned Bonk's Adventure for years and stupidly sold it before it jumped up in value. It's a real hidden gem although it is REALLY easy. Loved the music and atmosphere in that game though. Lastly, I completely agree about Milon's Secret Castle. Incredibly nostalgic for me as well but dang...was that one a Nintendo Power game or what? And of course Princess Tomato is a special game. You have every right to give that one an "S" based on your memories and nostalgic for it. ;)

This list is pretty spot on, though I'd have been a lot harsher on Milon's Secret Castle. I thought the play control and jumping physics in that game were a joke.
Bonk on the NES is an amazing port, definitely a top tier title. Freakishly expensive for the NTSC version, though. I grabbed the Famicom version a few years ago for less than a tenth of the American release's price. Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu was great, too. Not quite as good looking as the PC Engine original, but a great port nontheless.

on a related note of hard games i tried as an adult to play Kid Icarus having never played it before. i sucked . I loved the music and sound effects so much though. the mazes were incredibly hard . the Eggplant Wizard was more tough than his Captain N cartoon portrayal. I cheated and used a code to get further . I didn't see how I could get as far without one. I thought that he should always be able to fly permanently that would have made the game somewhat easier. i never got to the sidescrolling part. i did love the look of the game and environments though

I've got to wonder, in Adventure Island, why does everyone always call it a life bar? Dave from Game Sack even complained "Why have a life bar if you can only take one hit?". Doesn't anyone realize it's a TIME bar, rather than a life bar? :P

I got a copy of princess tomato when my local video store was going out of business. I got it for $15 complete in box. I foolishly sold it in 2001 on eBay... I wonder if you have it now.

Adventure Island 3, IIRC, while similar to its predecessor, has a higher difficult level, the gap is very noticeable. 2 was fun but never goes over the board. 3 is less forgiving.

I couldn’t beat Milon’s secret castle until I used slo-mo on the NES Advantage

a few of these games seemed to graphically push the limits of the NES..like the Jackie Chan one for example

I thought maybe you'd throw in a bonus ranking of their zipper controller. Maybe 3rd party NES controllers can be another list

This video made me realize I really slept on Hudson Soft as a kid. I didn't own any of these NES titles!

Huh. Maybe it's because they're both vertical auto-scrollers, but as soon as I saw Dino-Riki, I could hear background music from Capcom's Gun.Smoke.

A fourth unofficial Adventure Island game exists. And you need IPS language patcher to play it for 2 reasons 1 the obvious it has never got an English translation 2. Is there a physical release of the game sorry I'm not sure actually...I am not sure if it's a Hudson game or not
