Felix had a resurgence because of an '88 animated film release, officially released in the US in '91. i grew up with both the film and the game. keep up the great work!
Tons of nostalgia for Mendel Palace! Maybe not the best game but my younger brother and I still come back to the 2 player simultaneous mode decades later. Cool music and quirky gameplay.
The only one of these I remember playing is Milon's Secret Castle, and I absolutely loved that game. I played it for hours on end. My mom still has our old NES and she still plays it from time to time.
Awww, that's a real sweet story behind Princess Tomato. I've always seen the shadowbox in your videos, but it's nice to know there is so much significance behind that. Thanks for sharing! :)
@Ben DC4L I loved it because of it's replay value. Took me forever to beat this game, but it was one of those that I actually was determined to finish because to me it was that fun.
I think from now on this is what I am going to do with these ranking videos. Before watching I am going to pick my favorite game from each brand and rate it myself and see where John and I agree or disagree.
@Ben DC4L 8 Eyes was a fun game. Definitely had the replay value. I personally didn't like as much as Milon's or Mystery Quest, but still a great game.
Wow! My mom rented me Adventures of DinoRiki when I was really young so I didn't know the name and I never could find it again since I was more interested in Genesis and later console generations. It's great to discover it again after all these years through this video!
Really loving these videos John! The closest I had seen to ranking like this was when Pat the NES Punk did a ranking of the black box games, and that left me wanting more videos like that, and here they are!
We always pronounced Milon as “My Lawn” and a C seems low to me but different folks and all that. I love these rankings your doing. I tune into all of these.
I pronounced it "My Lawn" as well. My grandpa had a few distribution stations for the Oregonian and they ran a new subscriber contest with a NES and games as a prize. I would go door to door in 80s Portland trying to get people to buy daily, Sunday, or daily/Sunday subscriptions. I remember my brothers and I got to pick 3 each. I looked at as many magazines articles and ads I could get my hands on and Milon's Secret Castle ended up being one of my favorites.
Remember that show Video Power? It was all NES stuff, and they'd try and grab as many games and prizes as they could at the end part, they'd ALWAYS get the Jackie Chan game.
I’m surprised by how many good titles Hudson put out, back in the day I always sort of had a Stigma attached to Hudson games-not exactly sure why, maybe they seemed too cute if you know what I mean, so I dismissed just about everything they put out. Another excellent ranking video!
I'd like to see Acclaim next. They seem to be one of the more forgotten publishers; which is kinda odd when you take into consideration the fact that they were one of the "big 5" third party publishers of the 80s and 90s, along with Konami, Capcom, EA and Activision; all of which still remain in business while they don't.
To be fair, Konami doesn't make games anymore (and didn't when you posted this), and Activision isn't long for this world, either. Not for nothing, Disney almost bought EA right around the time you wrote this as well. Go Capcom! I guess.....
@@RickyIcecubes They almost exclusive make pachinko machines now. Rather famously, they announced just after the last metal gear flop that their focusing their business on that.

Ha, ha, ha!! Same here! I never did know how to pronounce the name of that game until recently. It's a shame that Hudson Soft chose such poor box art along with the obscure name. It has to be why the game wasn't more popular. It really is a fantastic game too!
I had forgotten that Bomberman was on the NES, I had the TG16 games, 5 player battle mode was great when I was in the barracks. With Starship Hector, which I also never heard of, interesting to hear that Hudson put timed challenge stages on other games outside the TG16 ones.
You seem like such a nice guy! I can really se myself having a beer and a laugh with you! I like your videos alot, they have good content, good voice and delivery. so thank you for your time entertaining us! take care!
Milon is a proto metroidvania. If it wasnt for the terrible no invincibility frame, it is actually fun. Less confusing map wise than the original metroid. It is the platforming and combat that is bringing it down. Once you get extra health and bigger bubbles it gets more satisfying when you get OP... but nobody made it that far back in the days.
Wow, two of these Hudson games I've never heard of before: Mendel Palace and Starship Hector. I thought I was familiar with all the Hudson titles. I need to give Starship Hector a try.
Aww....Legacy of the Wizard. Years and years ago, a friend of mine challenged me to beat Legacy of the Wizard and he said I would be the "NES King" if I could pull that off. I literally mapped the entire game and spent a few months on it before finally beating the game. It was such a rewarding feeling. :) The key is to know which characters to use in each area of the game. Understanding the layout is huge too (not sure I could have beaten it without writing down a map!) The music is REALLY good too.
Great commentary on these games again. Still loving these lists. From what I've played I mostly agree, but I would rate Mendel Palace at higher than a D. I had fun with it. B? I don't know. I always pronounced it "meye-lon".
John Riggs, love the videos. Is there any material behind a future video about the top publishers that might have only made 1 or 2 games only during the lifetime of the NES? You could do your rank of these small publishers based on the few games that they may have made. I did not look into this to see if there is enough content to do it, but that would be cool if possible!!!

In Milon's Secret Castle there are secret doors, windows, walls, shops and invisible floors, it is ridiculously hard and with out hints makes it even worse, in XEXYZ which the original japanese famicom game is "Turtle's Repayment: Urashima Legend" (literally) they localized the story which makes no sense, like it happened with Blaster Master in the U.S.

Awesome!! Thank you for doing a Hudson Soft video, John! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and I feel like my personal ratings are *very* close to yours. So many of these games are immensely nostalgic and Hudson Soft made some hidden gems that I didn't play until the early 00's (Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu for one...that game is SO fun). I don't know if I would rank any of them as "S" (although Felix the Cat and Adventure Island III might have a shot) but most of their games were superb. I owned Bonk's Adventure for years and stupidly sold it before it jumped up in value. It's a real hidden gem although it is REALLY easy. Loved the music and atmosphere in that game though. Lastly, I completely agree about Milon's Secret Castle. Incredibly nostalgic for me as well but dang...was that one a Nintendo Power game or what? And of course Princess Tomato is a special game. You have every right to give that one an "S" based on your memories and nostalgic for it. ;)
There’s a game I can’t think of but it’s sort of like Bomberman except you also have a gun and more power ups, if I remember right you play as a grey robot. I loved it but I forgot the name lol. I know it’s not a Hudsonsoft game of course.
