    This is so good! The whole 'ass to grass' thing is such bullsh*t. Some people can squat very low, fair enough, but there's many of us that really aren't flexible to do that even though the ROM will still be perfect for our specific body types.

    Let me go into a bit further of detail here before I head off to another one of your vids. I found the somersault squat one day and decided to give it a shot. Let me state that I have very long femurs & tibia in relation to my torso. Getting to parallel w/o lumbar flexion has been a bitch, and my dorsiflexion ROM is decent. Anyway, I had always preferred front squats, as they had allowed me to stay more upright and reach a lower depth (& even more so when heels elevated). I tried Joe Daniels somersault squats and basically fell in love with it. Sure, I look like an idiot doing it, but I've seen more growth in my lateral quads from this than anything else I've ever done. However, I don't want to advise others to do it. Even though I've never experienced any knee issues from the lift, I don't want to advocate a lift that I don't 100% understand. It does look like it gives the knees hell, but I've never experienced any pain/issues personally. I would love if you could do a video breakdown of the lift. Search 'Joe Daniels Somersault squat' on youtube and take a look. I'd really like someone to further discuss the whole 'patellar-femoral force change' that happens when the knees track out past the toes. I've looked online but I haven't found anyone whose information I trust enough.
    Thank you! If you have an existing video on this I'm sure I'll find it here soon, as I have just discovered your vids and have a lot to look through. Even if you have a vid up discussing patellar-femoral forces, can you take a look at the somersault squat? Thanks:)

    Would you ever do a video breakdown of Joe Daniel's somersault squat? I just watched a video in which you discuss how the knees coming out over the toes isn't the 'knee,' it's patellar-femoral forces. After I finish this video I'm off to look for a video in which you discuss that further.
    I can't thank you enough.

    I understand when it comes to squatting with the bar things look a lot different, but isn't going down to that full squat position - like the baby on the picture - (without any weights) beneficial for improving the range of motion. I am predominantly an Ectomorph with a long femur and short torso and when i first approached this position I couldn't stay in it at all, ending up on the floor. After a while of practice and stretching of some muscles (mostly calf) now i am able to sit down in this type of squat for long periods of time, when I squat down to rest i go flat footed all the way down instead of raising the hills of the floor because now it is more comfortable. Also third world countries go to the toilet that way - which anatomically makes more sense with the intestinal alignment but thats probably another subject. So my question is When I work with my clients we usually run a routine before starting to squat with the bar, one of the parts in the routine is this deep squat position, if they are unable to go down and sit in it, I advise them to train to sit in that position, even the ectomorphs after a while are able to sit their comfortably. Is it OK for me to this type of routine or would you advise against it? Thanks for the video Cezar

    If kids never stopped squatting, would they still "become unable" to squat at a certain age? Also, the metal model does not strike me as a good way of illustrating the body in the squat, especially with the aparently lacking ankle mobility :S

    • @diapherodestruncata8131
      @diapherodestruncata8131 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mathias-
      Well it depends. If you evaluate what is presented it is possible to squat well as kid and lose the ability as an adult regardless of how hard you try to keep it in training. You would need to look at all the variables for that person.
      The lack of ankle motion in the model (sub talar/ability of the "foot" to collapse) only limits the understanding of you are not yet able to appreciate how eversion/inversion would influence the segmental lengths. If you understand this the model works just fine.
      A quick TH-cam video is not an equivalent for hours of study on this model alone exploring different changes in segmental length and factors that influence this... and attending a course to explore in greater detail...so I'm not sure why it's being use as the be all end all in understanding when it seems apparent it's meant to be just one snip it ....

    • @REPerformance1
      @REPerformance1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Pete Brown Matthias is right. look at his picture comparing the baby and adult squat position . what's the biggest difference? segmental lengths? maybe but the baby is in greater dorsi flexion. the adult is in horirble dorsi flexion. if he uses his diagram and adjusts from the bottom up you'll see that increasing dorsi flexion will move the knee forward which will allow the femur to rotate down toward the heel and make the torso more upright. if you've ever coached Olympic lifting you'll know that athletes of all segmental lengths need to build that upright baby position oryou won't be able to catch the clean or snatch. I'd like to see the video edited to show more dorsi flexion as the the first change and how the other joints fall into place.

    • @diapherodestruncata8131
      @diapherodestruncata8131 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately... The "he is right because...look at this one piece of the puzzle" argument doesn't work.
      Dorsiflexion is one piece of the puzzle ... And the model does adjust for dorsiflexion... And dorsiflexion changes the variables and you should note that more than adequate dorsiflexion is outdone by segmental lengths that are not adequate.
      Please no more blanket statements on a complex issue

    • @REPerformance1
      @REPerformance1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I said exactly it's a piece of the puzzle and not once did he point out how increased dorsi flexion can help move closer to the squat like a baby position. In the adult position the segmental lengths are constant. the femur will not lengthen, therefore you need to address joint mobility across the board. Is it harder to find that position for an adult? definitely. Saying it's not realistic to squat deep isn't the solution, it's a problem we have.

    • @diapherodestruncata8131
      @diapherodestruncata8131 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razors edge...
      Please refer to the other videos this gentleman has posted.
      And as it pertains to the issue of femur" length" ... It's not the length of the femur that's an issue. It's the proportions and how they influence the distribution of mass all of which includes individual joint range of motion. And under that context the "length" of the femur relative to the "sagital" plane is something that can be manipulated with "foot width" all of which when used appropriately will influence squat depth.
      This is far more complex than individual joint ranges... You can assess joint ranges outside of a squat scenario and frequently they will have a greater range than they can display in the squat..this isn't a flexibility alone issue ... I have no doubt that using an understanding of those variables you can optimize someone's ability to squat... But saying you can get everyone to achieve a certain depth is quite frankly silly.

    Well, I have been reading about squatting and squat position and whenever I heard a reference about squatting like a baby I understood it as meaning that it comes naturally to them as opposed to adults, not about it's actually done. Of course it will be have to be done differently if your proportions are different.

    I'm a 22 year old male, and can still squat like a baby... I'm not sure if this is good or bad..
    I'm also not sure whether I should "Sit back" or "sit down" in the squat (Sitting down gives me slightly more ROM, but I can go below parallel with both).

    Flexibility is not one of my strength. I learned to squat deep by spreading the distance between my feet so I can squat between my legs. Which is not shown in your two dimensional model. I can squat hamstrings to calves almost like a baby.

    5 mins into a video and I don't get what this guy is talking about. If center of mass is a problem due to tiny adult head, tie a dumbbell to your head, problem solved. I can squat like a baby with my average adult head without "assistance". But there is some hips pain.
