OMG, Jackson Browne! So many numbers I could recommend. "Tender is the Night", "Something Fine", "Rock Me On the Water", "Running on Empty", "The Pretender", "Looking East"--I could do a lot more. It's wonderful that you're checking Jackson out. He truly is an exceptional songwriting talent.

Jackson just came out with a new album, and recently released the single "My Cleveland Heart". He is probably one of the most brilliant singer songwriters around. As a matter of fact he wrote the Eagles song "Take It Easy", which was a huge hit for them. You should also check out his songs "Doctor My Eyes" and "Late For The Sky".

Actually Jackson co-wrote Take It Easy with Glenn Frey when they lived in the same apartment complex and Glenn was always after him to finish writing it. So he gave it to Glenn to finish and they share writing credits and as they say the rest is history. Frey wrote the Winslow, Arizona verse.

I dearly hope this leads to you to listen to more Jackson Browne soon. "Rock Me On the Water," "Before the Deluge," and "The Pretender" are brilliant early/mid-70s songs, and I think you'd love his live recording of "The Load-Out/Stay".

So happy you're finally discovering Jackson Browne - he's such a great songwriter! Jackson's lyrics are so personal, poignant and heartfelt that you can't help but feel something. He's in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of fame having written dozens of hits, so it's surprising that you'd start with this one - fans will love it; most non-fans will probably never have heard it.
If you want to hear a different side of him, among his most popular songs are Doctor My Eyes, Running on Empty, or The Pretender. They're all more upbeat, and were big hits, but still have brilliant lyrics.
Arguably his greatest song (or at least a huge fan favorite) is Late for the Sky - a gorgeous song about a breakup from the album of the same name - generally regarded by his fans as his greatest album.

    • @Yaktahbay
      @Yaktahbay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Late For The Sky may be my favorite of his albums, although it's generally pretty depressing. The first song I heard from it, "Fountain Of Sorrow", may still be the one I like best, mainly for his clever wordplay but also because it's less dirge-like than most of the album. But "For A Dancer" is as fine an elegy for a departed friend/lover/family member as there is.

Thanks for doing this reaction Daniel…Jackson Browne was so very instrumental to who I was becoming in my early 20’s and has remained a touchstone to my inner self all these many years beyond. His whole songbook is worth a listen, one of my favorites being “Late for the Sky”.

Daniel, glad you finally got around to Jackson Browne, he is part of the 1970s Southern California music scene (Eagles, CS&N, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt). He produced some Warren Zevon albums and toured with him(billed as The Pretender and the Offender). You should check out some stuff from the Pretender (1976) especially the title cut. Here Come Those Tears Again from The Pretender and In The Shape Of A Heart from Lives In The Balance(1986) are emotional songs like the one you just did and deal with even a more personal subject. There are also some political songs about US/Central America on Lives In The Balance. Most of his earlier stuff is worth checking out.

SOOOO excited to see you finally encounter Jackson!! For a Dancer is also sad but ends with a beautiful affirmation of life. Anything Can Happen is about choosing to love in uncertain times. Before the Deluge is a gorgeous depiction of the moment the peace and love of the 60s flower children was co-opted by the violent protests of the antiwar movement.

I have been waiting a very long time for you to listen to this song and have suggested it many times. I'm very happy you finally "heard the call" to become acquainted with Jackson Browne. While he has had a successful songwriting and performing career, he never became a megastar. But I believe he is one of the greatest of all American songwriters and that this particular song is a monumental achievement in songwriting. Simple, heartfelt and profound, it takes no prisoners. The passage of time has not diminished it's ability to deliver an emotional gut punch. I first heard this song more than three decades ago and it is lodged in my consciousness in a way that no other song has ever achieved. It is so personal and spiritual, it's off the scale. Thank you for listening to it Daniel. Your reaction was EXACTLY what I expected because I know you even though we've never met. I would also recommend THE PRETENDER and FOUNTAIN OF SORROW by Jackson Browne. John (TRUE FILM FAN).

Sounds very Hermann Hesse inspired. Most of his stories involved one's journey through Life, and how one perceives it. I had a friend like Adam, and even in our closest moments, I did not know him well. Our journeys diverged, and in the end, I was surprisingly stronger, though he was far more talented and capable. The Bus of Life.

Beautiful song. Jackson lost his friend in 1968, but later on many people died this way due to taking PCP which gave it the nickname "Angel Dust." Probably his best known hits are The Pretender and Running on Empty. JB is an excellent lyricist.

I didn't have high hopes for Adam when the song was dedicated to him. Jackson Browne has written so many well known and and well crafted songs. I had never heard nor heard of this one, and yet it did not surprise me at all. It is consistent with what I had heard from him even though it really doesn't sound like the other songs. He's so versatile and the common thread in his music is the captivating storytelling. That and that voice. There are many more songs of his for you to discover that I know, and I'm sure there are even more I don't know.

Please take a look at Warren Zevon. Another genius songwriter/singer from the same era. He paints a detailed picture with few words and beautiful music. My favorites (out of hundreds) are: Carmelita; Poor, Poor Pitiful Me; Lawyers, Guns, and Money; Frank and Jesse James.

The older you get this song becomes more powerful. I just turned sixty and I find out about friends that have passed and it brings your own mortality into focus and to wonder what kind of impact you will leave when your gone . Will it be just another day or will it really matter to anyone.

Life & time is far more precious than most realize. What opportunities we have we must cherish and be most grateful and respectful of. Or you’ll regrets and sorrows too hard to bear.

I was fortunate to see him when he was young (77') and full of energy - so much that they played four encores ! This song climaxed that great show, leaving us all feeling so mellow and fulfilled. He wrote a fine lost love song "Shape of a Heart" that's a bit pop, but really good.

"These Days" is a song he wrote at age 16 that shows the maturity of an older man. "The Pretender," to me, is a rejection not only of materialistic values but the forever striving to "be a success." "Here Come Those Tears Again" was cowritten with his former mother-in-law after his wife committed suicide with barbiturates. He has written many great songs, often with thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics.

I'm glad you got around to Jackson. He has an enormous catalog of music including rock, reggae, love, country, disco, and humor. He is one of the most influential musician/poets from the golden days. Discovered by Linda Ronstadt, his music friends and acquaintances include The Eagles, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Duane and Greg Allman, Stevie Ray, Los Lonely Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, and many others. His accolades are enormous. BTW when Jackson writes, his poetry is not what it reads. He speaks in double entandres and metaphors. You gotta look deep for the meanings. Look up the song Rosie! Beautiful song and deep lyrics. This kind of music is both timeless and universal - poets with a guitar (or piano or something else) are still present with old songs, some of these artists from the 70ies are still around. And there are always new singer/songwriters, maybe a bit different in their style of music, but recognisable nonetheless - not only in the US/English speaking countries, but it seems they are all over the world singing in all languages (well, probably not "all", but many). Seems to be a human thing to sit down and sing a story.

"Doctor My Eyes" was the logical place to start. It's one of the most famous songs in rock history. His band included the legendary Lee Sklar and Russ Kunkel as the rhythm section, a gorgeous guitar solo from Jesse Ed Davis and backing vocals from Nasby & Crosh, er, I mean Crosby & Nash. A true classic in every sense of the word.
But Jackson has a million of them including his brand spanking new "Downhill From Everywhere." And, oh yeah, he's another one you want to do full albums for, especially that debut you were just looking at!

There's a whole lot of Jackson Browne tunes worth exploring. Try "These Days". It was written when Browne was 16 years old. The fact that a 16 years old could write something like this from the perspective of a much older world-worn person is unbelieveable.

    • @foxandscout
      @foxandscout 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

And Browne did not publish his singing These Days for years!
He gave it to Nico (Velvet Underground; and his girlfriend for awhile) who recorded it in 1967. Then the Allman Brothers sang it often live, with Greg Allman making some changes. Jackson hung out with the band and was friends with Greg. The Allman Brothers and Browne both released the song (on albums) within a short time of each other and Jackson sang and recorded Greg’s version. 1973! After Nico recorded it, it was recorded by other people and bands. After Browne and Allman Brothers recorded their versions, many more people and bands recorded it.
For such a painful song of loss and regret, it’s hard to imagine a 16-year-old was capable of feeling that deeply and capturing it in such beautiful words.
He’s one of my favorite songwriters: when I was your age, Daniel, and into my college years.
Depressing, moving, all the elements that hit hard when you are young and growing and learning.
He still sounds the same, he still sings. He posts on Instagram.
And boy was he cute! He is still a handsome man.
These Days is a classic. Daniel, you Must listen to it. Browne released it on his second album, For Everyman, which is incredible. Every song a gem.
Please please please: even if you don’t react to it, please listen to that album. Trust me, you will love it, and you will love Browne.

“Still it seems he stopped his singing in the middle of his song”
“So free of fear, we never thought that one of us might fall”
“And when I stood myself beside him, I never thought I was as strong”
In the last twelve years, I’ve lost my younger (and closest) brother, my ex-fiancee/still friend, and my best pal from middle/high school to suicide.
That line about the unfinished song describes all three of them: beautiful unfinished songs that would have been all the more beautiful, if not for the cacophony of abuse that played loudly and harshly on two of them, and the bipolar disorder that wouldn’t respond to medication and took the third of them.
They all projected great strength, at least some of the time, but two were walking with unhealed wounds, and one lost a bio-chemical roll of the dice.
The candles and our songs fade away so quickly. I wish our candles and songs could have slowly, softly faded together.

Vince, I am sorry for your losses. The words of this song do seem to "live" outside of the song, they are packed with meaningful metaphors.

This isn't one of his most popular songs, but it is one of his most moving. Other comments here mention many of his great songs, but try Fountain of Sorrow, Shape of a Heart, These Days, and Lawless Avenues... and maybe The Naked Ride Home, lol. And The Rebel Jesus, you might like, too.

My favorite song of his is Before the Deluge. It's an anthem of the Woodstock generation, at least it is in my mind. It contains one verse for each phase our generation went through to bring us to where we are today---a battle with our own destruction of the environment leaving us in an existential crisis. Jackson himself currently lives off the grid, produces his own energy, grows a great deal of his own food, etc. He's am extremely advanced thinker and doer. Few mention it, but he's a master guitarist. You will come to love him.

Yes, Id suggest Late For The Sky. The whole album is great. The song Late For The Sky puts the listener in the early morning hours when daytime reveals what night hides.
"Song For Adam" is just too damn painful for me to listen to tbh. I learned the song long ago but never could perform it. To close to home.
One of the most beautiful songs ever concerning the subject though.

I saw your video about listening to entire albums. This album was my first thought. His Late for the sky is another.
This is a song you should listen to and just feel. The truth doesn't matter. It is about what it makes you feel and what you think about (IMHO)

Great reaction video, thank you. You could consider doing “Looking into You” as far as another song from the same album, it’s another poignant story with some incredibly profound lyrics. Take for example how he ended or closed out his story, coming to this remarkable conclusion - Like a startling realization in his life that will change him forever and that which many others can/will relate to -
“Oh the great song traveler passed through here and he opened my eyes to the view, and I was among those who called him a prophet and I asked him what was true.
Until the distance had shown, how the road remains alone, now I'm looking in my life
for a truth that is my own.
Well I looked into the sky for my anthem
And the words and the music came through
But words and music will never touch the beauty that I've seen -
    looking into you -
    and that's true. “
Now that’s something above & beyond what you’d hear everyday. It’s worthy of remembrance, to hold dear in heart & mind for a very long time to come, waiting for that one person to come into your life where such an imprint can earnestly, passionately, be relayed unto them with all your heart, might, mind & soul, knowing that will be the greatest hallmark and uttermost pinnacle of your life, where sadly, many may not even ever achieve (or find), but strive for nevertheless.

Great singer songwriter. Stay in this lane. Paul Simon's "American Tune" from "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" not to be confused with "America" from Simon and Garfunkel lol. Also from solo Simon: Leaves that are Green, Duncan, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Kodachrome, Late in the Evening...really you can't go wrong with anything this artist wrote.

From Silver Lake is another beauty from this album, and Looking Into You. This and Late For The Sky are my favorites from Jackson Browne who carved a deep creative path as an American Indian performer. Only Robbie Robertson did as much as Browne to hold a torch for native poets in a white man’s world.

Neil Young was also a noteworthy contributor, a sincere, stalwart friend, though not a blood relation, a true friend to native Americans through & through.

Jackson Browne wrote deep introspective lyrics in his first 4 albums. You have sampled a song from the first album, Saturate Before Using. According to Bruce Springsteen (and me) when Bruce gave the induction speech when Jackson was inducted into the rock hall of fame, Jackson's 3rd album, Late For The Sky, is his masterpiece.
Jackson and Joni Mitchell are my 2 favorite singer/songwriters from the 70s (competition is deep with Dylan, Lightfoot, Neil Young, Carly Simon, etc) Interestingly, Jackson and Joni had a relationship that resulted in songs from both. Some of the songs from Late For the Sky are thought to be written about his breakup with Joni, but nothing for certain on that score.

If you’re interested in discovering more singer-songwriters I highly recommend Nick Drake. He’s not well known although he’s inspired many artists of today. His lyrics are pure poetry and his finger picking style is amazing. I promise you won’t be disappointed! Maybe do an album review, his songs are short and sweet
