An Insta-reply about port traffic, Dave. Just pulled onto the Korean Mafia HQ, after fueling up, and when I drop this trailer I’m done for the day. 3:30 in the afternoon mountain standard time. I’m going to buzz around the yard here and see how many of our over the road tractors are still out. OK, right now we have about half of our line-haul drivers and at least 1/3 of our local drivers not yet back in the yard. Those linehaul drivers will be coming back with loaded containers for delivery Monday and next week. That should put our yard at about 2/3 to 3/4 max capacity for loaded containers, both inbound and outbound combined. The empty containers are jampacked, as I drive around looking for an empty space to drop mine, somewhere around 100 containers, which is on the verge of full. I did a delivery down in South East Arizona in town called Willcox, farm country. I delivered a container to a farming operation, family run, and it had a bobcat and some other equipment inside of it. This family is from the Netherlands, and came out here to grow potatoes and feed corn. This equipment came from the Netherlands, and listen to this craziness, The container was unloaded in Houston, taken by rail to Los Angeles, picked up somewhere in LA, presumably at the Port facility, by us, was taken by line-haul here to Phoenix, and then by me from Phoenix down to Willcox! I only know this because these people were in direct contact with their broker that arranged the pick up, loading, delivery, shipping, and ultimate delivery at the receivers end. So they knew where their container was at all times. The United States relies very heavily upon cheap Chinese and other oriental crap. We have a volcano of an economy ready to explode, just as it did the day after Donald Trump was elected. As soon as there is some sign of stability in the markets, this economy is ready to go crazy. Be fore-warned, that working the ports here means dealing with the state of California. Container work for independent drivers may be more profitable in Houston and the East Coast. I really cannot say, but we know what a bunch of horseshit the politics in California has been for the last 30 years. And it is not going to get any easier for truck drivers in the foreseeable future.

I have turned down offers from JB Hunt to do their so-called Local intermodal runs. That’s fine if you want to pay me stop pay, and mileage, but I need to get paid while I’m stopped , and while I’m fueling, and while I’m broken down, and while I’m fiddling with paperwork, etc. I will never ever again in my life work a job where they do not pay me to show up and fart, let alone not pay me for actually doing required work

So Dave, yesterday I had a delivery up in Williams, Arizona. I’m sure you know where that is, on route 66 between Flagstaff and Kingman. You recently had a video about winter driving, so as I got further north and higher in elevation, Snow was lightly falling up in northern Arizona. The snow covered mountains were beautiful, and the snow covered pine trees were beautiful, and my outside temperature showed between one and 3°C. I was going to send you pictures of Mike “winter driving in Arizona“. The story just gets so wonderful when I headed west out of Flagstaff! I will have to forward you pictures via email

I had a terrible misfortune yesterday morning involving a tractor trailer. I'm not exactly sure what happened I was driving through fog and I was driving slowly so I wouldn't be caught by surprise. One second everything was fine the next second I started sliding and I ended up in the ditch in the oncoming lane. Luckily no one else was involved and I walked away with just a broken hand. I may be out of the driver's seat for awhile.

Well, after all this time, if you haven’t figured it out now, you will never figure it out in the future. All the money in 2024 is going exactly where it always goes. In the mega carriers, bank account or the load brokers bank account. The easiest question is how little will the truck driver make this year compared to a normal cost-of-living standard wage? We all don’t have to look far for that answer.

I wonder how far until the robot trucks in France jump to America.
My guess is it will start with Amazon first. And then spread like wildfire everywhere. Probably a million plus for a robot truck though.
But, when we are talking $200k per truck now. That needs a human component.
Rest assured, we will always need humans to load and unload trucks.

I beleive its all garbage to the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025. I see it slowly picking up but I had to shut down my hauling.Just wasn't able to finance my personal life. With some debt, an O/O sole proprieter has personal debt afterwards.
Oversize amd hazmat I saw comming even for Hotshots.
I recently volunteered my MC to be inactive and looking for a job paying what bills I can.
As I said I see it coming back, but very slowly.
Autonomous trucks is dangerous. People say " well the technology is better" need to shut up. I was in automation in factories.photo eyes, and yes photo recognition of bar codes on occasion has to be retaught and reset to identify things. Most of these billions of dollars industrial factories already use " state of the art" technology and use some of the same sensors. We still get rejects and still get bad items not caught.
Soon a pedestrian will be rejected because of the color of clothes he was wearing.

Short- and medium-haul are where electric semis are going to completely take over. They have the required range, they meet emissions standards for work in ports, and most-importantly, electric semis cost significantly less to fuel and maintain. This is going to happen within the next 10 years.
