  • In this video, I'll be making some zinc acetate with which I will try to produce acetic anhydride.

    for some acetates like sodium acetate alcohol will help the hydrates form really nice crystals when added while warm and cooling

    Great video, I would be very keen to see you attempt acetic anhydride from the acetate!

      Thank you, I will try it once I get my vacuum pump, now I use an aspirator which works great but I want to be able to read the pressure.
      Also, I did some further research and it seems the paper which stated this pathway is really flawed and there's a good chance that it won't work.

      @@corrosivechemistry I have read up on it quite a bit aswell it could still be worth a try though. There have been attempts on it and they have been partially successful where the anhydride wasnt condensed and was instead sucked through the vacuum pump. There have also been attempts with silver acetate that have yielded acetic anhydride.
      I understand the hesitancy people have on believing it will work however without trying it knowone will know for sure! Also if silver acetate yielded AAA that says somthing.
      One other thing is zinc acetate can be used for acetylation itself via refluxing under anhydrous conditions with certain compounds!

    Nice video, do you know why, when i mix my zinc acetate with sodium bicarbonate i get a precipitate of zinc carbonate. But when i heat the zinc carbonate up i am left with a yellow-ish powder, not the white zinc oxide i was expecting.

      I have no idea why it's yellow in your case specifically, but a lot of times a small amount of some impurity is enough to color a normally white oxide yellow, i experienced this yesterday as I was making some bismuth oxide, it was white until I calcinated it and it turned yellow.

    What type of acids can melt zinc? Hydrochloric?

    • @corrosivechemistry
      @corrosivechemistry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, zinc is very reactive and pretty much any acid will dissolve it,

      Well, I actually tried it but it doesn't work at all, drying the salt complete is verry difficult and any water is conna destroy the anhydride, also during the Destillation it releases lots of Gases which makes a vacuum impossible, it actually blew of the stopper oven though I had the pump running, the stuff I got out was mostly water...

      @@corrosivechemistry I actually got around to trying this small scale as well but I had much the same issues… It did however produce some pale brownish liquid.. I have no idea what it is, it certainly didn’t smell like acetic anhydride..
      I think if I’m going to try to make it I will go the Sulfur chloride route..
      On my list is to try acetylate an amine with an acetate salt again not sure it will work but we will see!

      Here in Europe lead wheigts have been banned since 2005, i believe they are still used in america sometimes but nowadays most are made of Zinc, some are iron some even copper, but you can find the element symbols on most of them.
