While the second _Charge Card_ isn't necessarily a scam, it feels like one, but a good way to troll your loved ones lol The first is legit. Other than that, the explanation you gave out from the perspective of science was well-versed.
As for the “Charge Card” wallet sized charger, I believe it is intended that the device look sort of like an actual credit card or Charge Card, as we once called them. Thus the contact pads are a part of the faux-credit/charge card look. That’s all it is. As for the “magic trick” version, the fake contact pad or a part of the illusion that it is a “real” phone charging card that is designed to look like a faux-credit/charge card, much the the real product of the same name. It’s all just for show.
The amperage shown is such a laugh since if that's to actually to charge anything that's an outdated amperage. Ultra Fast Charging, I think they meant Ultra Slow Charging.
Your paying for the convenience of having a battery that isn’t carried separately from other items meaning it more likely to be with you when you need it. If fairness its certainly not a standard layout for containing the more popular off the self battery sizes plus it most likely has a custom layout for the chargers control board plus tooling costs, patents, design, RandD. 69bucks is steep but it not really fair to compare it to other portable power storage devices as they are most likely built around pre-existing batteries and control boards. I am not aware of any that meet the in your wallet at all times criteria. So it does solve a specific problem other products don’t with a unique design. Or maybe I am just not aware of the other similar products.
@@PeterJamesMomentsrandom note, I work in ewaste sorting, and I've seen quite a few of these things come through. I'm not sure if they are the originals or knockoffs, but clearly many people aren't happy with them as they were. Also usb-c ports cost literally pennies and can be implemented just as thin as micro USB can, it's pretty dumb for them to keep using micro USB in the modem day, all comes down to them but wanting to do a redesign on the product.
@@psychonauts0 I suspect the issue is the charging speed is too slow if you don't notice that your phone battery is running low. I don't have one, but often times the charging speed is dependent upon the combination of devices involved. As in, the charging speed in this video could potentially just be a slow charging mode, or there may be no fast charging mode at all. I've got a small 10,000mah battery pack that I take with me most of the time and it'll charge my phone a couple times in the time it takes this one to fully charge a phone.
I still feel that the 'real' charge card is a scam. That whole company makes overpriced substandard products. A safe box that you use on a deck chair is just madness, you are just advertising that you are storing your valuables and a determined thief will have those in seconds. There was a similar product on the UK version of Shark Tank, Dragons Den, and it was practically laughed out of the den.
You can find similar products on your favourite Chinese retail sites for a fraction of the price. Search, "Card Power Bank." Now, the question is: are those bootlegs or is this a white label product being sold at a markup?
I hate how people making these "credit-card-sized" products all seem to think they're two-dimensional objects with irrelevant thickness. That thing is easily the size of 4 or 5 credit cards, if you count the z dimension (it's hard to tell the exact thickness from the video but ISO 7810 specifies 0.76mm). Sure, it might fit some places a credit card will, but it's still more bulky. Still closer then all the USB charging bricks I used to see advertised a couple years ago when GaN was becoming popular that were a good 20-25mm thick and would clearly not fit in any kind of wallet.
@@AstoundingAmelia TBH, I think the bigger issue is that if you do put it into your wallet, you had better not be putting it in any of your pants pockets.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Why would I enjoy stand-up comedians, but not these Tik-tok "magicians"? They're both essentially entertaining with deception. I think the greatest difference is that everyone knows what stand-up comedy looks like, and that many of them tell stories that aren't true. On the other hand, platforms like Tik-tok, TH-cam, ExTwitter, etc. do not inform people of the nature of a specific content creator when their algorithms select that content for you. Thus, it is up to the individual creator to set the expectations of their audience, and here as well, the algorithms tend to favor engagement over positivity.
I'm waiting for Amex to add power bank functionality to their latest „Black“ cards... 🙃 (They're not „Black“ cards initially, but after the thermal runaway takes hold... 🔥💳⚫😉)
This fact about phone batteries is exactly why I consider two to three hours as a reasonable enough charge time if it doesn't say how long it takes either on the box or somewhere in the owner manual, at least with phones and similar electronics. With fans or other stuff I don't really care about that as I know it's due to these facts.
Less gross than a Lightning. That can charge only a very small selection of devices, and just begs to be short circuited against a random metal object.

Ok young man, USB charging started at 0.5A which was unable to charge early tablets. The 1.5A charging was made which is "technically" high powered. (And it's usually 5v for logic circuits)
And 0,5A charging still has its uses. I still use a half-amp charger and _make time_ to charge my devices. It seems to extend the operational lifespans of the batteries a great deal by reducing the stress induced in service. 👍

The complaint about only showing the amps doesn't make any sense in this context. It doesn't support USB power delivery, so we know the voltage is always going to be 5 volts.
Fun to see two items that aren't scams. I remembered that I'd seen the ChargeCard like last October on Freakin' Reviews, and generally, he liked it. He agreed the price was a little steep, but yes, you're paying for the size and convenience over capacity. TBH, I'd buy a good Anker powerbank for the same price at the expense of it being bulkier.
TBH, the 10,000mah power bank I have isn't really that much bigger than that card is, it's just shaped differently. If you were to roll one of those chargecards up, it probably wouldn't be any smaller than mine. Although, it is kind of cool that there's an integrated charging cable.

Not to mention the space between the card and the battery would become very hot. There are still conductive elements between the coil and transmitter from above and normally they'll barely be impacted by the small trickle being produced by the coupling. However, in this figurative mass-power scenario, the tiny coupling of the conductors within the screen would become extremely hot.
The "trick" Charge Card reminds me of the "Super Kleener" segment of Penn & Teller's 1980s "Cruel Tricks For Dear Friends" video. I remember playing this on a few friends and family members and it blew their minds. There's also a segment called "Vidi-Copy" that claims to turn your TV into a digital photocopier. Definitely work checking out!
Goddamn it😂… I already knew a device to charge a phone can’t fit into the form factor of a credit card! So here I was getting excited that you were actually reviewing one of those “smart” credit card devices that can store and access multiple credit cards using a little embedded screen on the card itself.
Seems like a lot of effort just to fool people into thinking you can charge your phone in seconds . Hell , I thought I was a boring person until I saw this so called elaborate magic trick 🙄🤡
Speaking of unusual phone chargers, I'd love to see some serious testing of those cheap portable solar panels with direct charging ports (without an external battery). They're practically everywhere, priced from under 10 bucks to almost 50 for the more polished models, with advertised maximum outputs between 3 and 15 watts. Most of them do work, but very inconsistently, charging some phones reasonably well but others very slowly or not at all, apparently unrelated to the phone battery size/capacity or charging port type. My best guess is that some phones may have a sort of power input filter or sensor checking charger compatibility, but I'm no engineer.
I own a couple of them and they are nice - you need to place them in direct sunlight and even then the power rating is only half of what is advertised. the marketing pictures with them hanging off of a backpack are of course bulls***. the slightest shadow on any of the segments and the power output is gone. also you will bake your phone or power bank in direkt sunlight. but still .. if you have all day to charge something in an emergency. (not sure though if it would work with an Iphone - it would probably stop charging if a cloud passes over and not start charging again afterwards?!)

Fun shark fact: sharks can be sexed by looking at their pelvic fins. The males have two penises, one on each pelvic fin, called "claspers". A contrast to most fishes, which fertilize externally, also called spawning.
Also note that when your phone is charging via USB-C fast charging protocol, the charger and phone negotiate what wattage to use. Current draw is determined by the device to be charged and the charger together.

Rapid charging is just something we haven't figured out how to do yet as of 2024. Give it a couple more decades, I'm sure someone will figure out how to charge something in like 5 seconds. And before anyone says it's impossible, we once thought going to the moon was impossible. So there you have it.
If society ever finds itself in the position where it becomes _necessary_ to fully charge a device battery in five seconds, we will probably have more pressing questions than where the charger has got to... 😉
People also used to say that it was impossible to go to the edge of the world and fall off, and they turned out to be right. People think all sorts of things are possible or impossible, some end up being right, others wrong, people fixate on the ones who were wrong. (like the ones who said you can't go to the moon, or that you can go to the edge of the world and fall off.) Even if it's possible, someone will figure it out, tech media will write a few articles about it, and then it will be forgotten when the news cycle about the new battery that you only need to charge twice a year comes around. Then a few years later someone will make a post online asking what happened, and they will be told that the companies both got bought out. That is to say, I'm skeptical of anything like of that happening in only a few decades, battery tech just doesn't go very fast. Also, regardless of how advanced the tech is there is always a tradeoff, because if you ever develop tech to have lots of A and lots of B simultaneously you could probably even have even more A if you settled for less B or even more B without much A instead. So if it isn't impossible it seems like one of those things where if you could do it you almost certainly would have better alternatives. Like would you want a device that takes 5 seconds to charge 10 times a year or one that requires 1 minute to charge twice a year? Really, if people were willing to accept enough tradeoffs I'm pretty sure it technically could be done today, but would be totally useless. (Take 10 kg of capacitors, charge using an EV supercharger.)
Regarding not showing the voltage on the fast charging, USB is always 5 volts, which at 1.5A tracks with the 7.5W charging power. I don't think that expecting them to list the voltage when it's explicitly advertised as a USB product is a valid criticism.
5v at 1.5A is the basic USB Charging Spec profile which doesn't use any smart signalling or make use of any Fast Charging technology. In fact charging any battery at anywhere between 0.5C and 1C is what i would call standard charging. Below would be slow, below 0.2C would be trickle, and above 1C could be called fast charging. If we take 3.7V as reference voltage, the charging current at that point would be about 1.8A maximum (conversion efficiency), and given a phone battery is more than 1800mAh, this is firmly in the "standard charging" category typically for batteries up to about 3600mAh.
I got a 3000 mAh power bank at Walmart a couple years ago for $6. The ChargeCard being priced at $70 for only 2300 mAh of capacity already makes it a total scam
@@LetrixARNo, but it's still a considerably thin device. My point is that physical size aside, the price of $70 for only 2300 mAh is just way too high. The device being extra thin is not a worthwhile trade off.
@@banishedepsilon1802yeah that is fair, I will say personally I do like the idea of having a thin card size charger since that would actually fit in the wallet case of my phone
The issue with charging at an absurd rate is literally physics. Heat is created when phones (or any rechargeable batteries) are charged, that heat needs to be kept under a certain temperature so as not to damage the components. So, there is the issue of passing the energy through while not having the heat reach a level that needs to be lowered to avoid major issues. Honestly, I think they'd have to come up with a new type of battery to come up with a level of charging that can even come close to an hour for a full battery. I'm not a physicist so I don't have a clue what that new battery type or material would be, all I know is it would somehow have to transfer ions back and forth at a rate that is unheard of...all while somehow not creating heat. That is where I'm clueless about what would work in that sense, not to mention the new technology would be absurdly expensive before being consumer-affordable...if it was figured out.
I know that as a middle-aged European urban man I'm liable to overestimate the technical awareness of the everyday Joe - but is there really a large enough target population still out there for such a scam (I know this isn't a scam but a trick prop, but the question still stands), who doesn't know that phone charging in mere seconds is utter impossibility, even if they don't know why exactly it's impossible technologically? I mean, when cars were a relatively new thing, I can imagine that a lot of people could be fooled by saying I came up with a car that needs no fuel - because a lot of people new next to nothing about cars - in a few deacdes I could have fooled next to nobody with the same claim, because cars became widespread and people knew better than believe such an outlanmdish claim. I would think the same applies to mobile phones - people MUST know they can't be charged up in seconds, right?... Right?
You're exactly right. No magic tricks (except by scammers) are meant to fool people into that they really happened. They're to make you think "How did they do that?!" and wonder at the trick. Though to be fair, there are always SOME people who swear a magician really did the impossible thing they just saw, they are a small proportion of people overall. In this case, I'm sure there are people who don't use charging or electronic devices enough to even know they're supposed to be impressed by the trick, but not very many.
Ive finally discovered the great thing about getting old. I can make my niece and nephew cringe super hard just by saying rizz. The first time my niece was like how do you know that?
USB-C PD supports up to 240W of power, but mostly only laptops are using more than 40W. Charging a single cell battery like the one in your phone that fast will degrade it quickly. If you want your phone battery to last the longest amount of time, only charge it at 5W.
For an industry expert I find that trick quite lame... I figured it out way before you showed it, but I thought "nah, it can't just be that, that's lame as sh.. Must be more to it." But no, it's actually way worse, because I thought they'd at least provide a video, and not just images that you play as a slideshow.
the usb spec is 5V, so its ok to only mention the A, 1.5A is better that regular chargers, cheap ones often have 1A and sometimes 0.5A, fast ones have 2A though. actual fast charging is different though since it changes V and A depending on various factors.

Until society gets away from the tradition of men putting all their important documents in a small holder, folding it in half, and SITTING on it, wallet batteries will still be a hazard.

@@ozonesama D:
And 0,5A charging still has its uses. I still use a half-amp charger and _make time_ to charge my devices. It seems to extend the operational lifespans of the batteries a great deal by reducing the stress induced in service. 👍
The complaint about only showing the amps doesn't make any sense in this context. It doesn't support USB power delivery, so we know the voltage is always going to be 5 volts.
I was thinking the same thing.. what USB charger isn't 5 volts?! Therefore the only variable we need to know is amps.

It is a pretty convenient size... That's not bulky at all to keep in a pocket.
(like the ones who said you can't go to the moon, or that you can go to the edge of the world and fall off.)
Even if it's possible, someone will figure it out, tech media will write a few articles about it, and then it will be forgotten when the news cycle about the new battery that you only need to charge twice a year comes around.
So knowing the whole time it was a party trick and not a scam, ken is the only one scamming anybody with this video...
Is it the same size as a card?
@@LetrixARNo, but it's still a considerably thin device. My point is that physical size aside, the price of $70 for only 2300 mAh is just way too high. The device being extra thin is not a worthwhile trade off.

@@endymallorn Did somebody just watch Linus Tech Tips?
I hope we get more videos a bit faster about scam, is a lot out there and I love your videos :D
