Based on this VFR rating, OTT platforms makes a deal. Advanced money is paid before the release and contingent money is paid if the movie gets a minimum VFR rating (which varies between 2.5 - 5.5 depending on the deal). According to this, Ponmagal is a hit, Penguin & Gulabo sitabo are flops on digital. But all the movies are profit making ventures to the makers.
Gulabo sitabo :- Prime made a deal of 125 crs. ( 50 crs assured, +12 crs if weekend Vfr is more than 5.23, +63 crs if overall average Vfr is more than 4.5). Weekend Vfr rating was a dismal 3.9 & later fell to below 2. Considering Ayusman & Amitabh, high Vfr of 7 was expected. But, nonetheless, producers will get assured 50 crores and it's a profit venture for the makers, considering the budget of 38-40 crores. So, it's a flop on digital but a clean hit for makers. Ott is a boon for this movie cuz the movie wouldn't have worked in theatres due to the slow pace and poor talk it recieved. With direct Ott release, print & publicity cost got saved, avoided distributors share and makers made a clean profit of 10crs.
Ponmagal Vandhal :- Total deal 8.5 crs ( 4.5 crs Advance + 4 crs contingent). Contingent for a conditional Vfr of 3.5 for weekend and 3.0 in the first 7 days. The movie scored a good 4.7 Vfr rating and is a hit on digital. So it's both digital hit and also made profits for makers. Since the budget is around 1.5 crs (Jyothika fee not included) and makers got complete 8.5 crs from prime as per deal, it's a super hit.
Paatal Lok is a blockbuster on digital. Highest Vfr (8.6) for any Indian webseries till date. Compared to Queen 6.5, Sacred Games 5.9, Family Man 5.2, Mirzapur 3.4, The forgotten Army 2.9, Minding the Malhotras 1.9.
