We only have 1 national anthem, called Indonesia Raya (Indonesia the Great). This national anthem is the one used during the raising of the flag in national ceremonies, which held in schools/offices/government instances. But we also have lots of national songs which usually have heroic theme. These songs were created during the independence movement. And its main purpose is to keep the fighting spirit of the Indonesian people to reach freedom. And usually in public schools, there is a music class where students will learn these national songs. (But this was in my time so, 90~early 2000.) One of them is this song, Tanah Airku (My Mainland). This song was created by a woman known as Ibu Sud (Ibu means Mother/Madame). Rarely do people know her real name, we just know her as Ibu Sud. According to one of her grandchildren, Ibu Sud created this song while she was sick and went for treatment abroad. While outside, it was cold and windy, the rain turned to snow, and she looked outside and said, "I wish I was home." Perhaps, this is the reason why it's so touching, lyrically and melodically. Because it was truly coming from her heart. RIP Ibu Sud.
oh no it's pinned. someone should tell this comment that there is a bit of incorrect information regarding the history of her song. Ibu Sud was in New York for the World Fair. For several months, he started to miss Indonesia. Ibu Sud was sick because it was winter in New York and her body couldn't stand with cold. but still professional to work. creating music Tanah Airku is part of her longing to go home. is not about heroism, but has become national music because it encourages people to love their own country
This song was written by Madame Sud in New York City when she attended World Fair. It was in 1960s. After several months in NY City, she felt homesick, and asked permission from our president to go home but was asked to stay a little bit longer. She was in an apartment looking at the snow falling outside and felt really homesick. She authored a lot of songs, and this song was authored in NY City in that World Fair event. It is not about heroism, but simply about beautiful home country that she missed a lot.
As an Indonesian halfie who’s been living abroad in HK, KL, Singapore, and now London for the past 10 years, this song will always be a tearjerker for me. I was once offered the chance to give up my green passport, but I won’t. I hope my kids will also choose Indonesian citizenship when the time comes. 🇮🇩🇮🇩
As an Irish-Indonesian, even though I can already call this country my home, dan saya bahkan sudah jadi WNI beberapa tahun lalu, lagu ini selalu membuat saya membayangkan sawah kakek di Sligo beserta biri-biri nya.
I hate it when they put the 1st verse only. The rest of the song has even deeper meaning for the diaspora players. 2nd verse: Walaupun banyak negeri ku jalani Even though I live in many countries Yang mahsyur permai di kata orang That people said, it's great and beautiful Tetapi kampung dan rumahku But my home & hometown Di sanalah kurasa senang That's where my joy is Tanahku tak kulupakan My land, that I won't forget Engkau kubanggakan You're my pride
