Your doing a great job, It must be a lot more time consuming Josh building a dry stone wall than a one with mortar because of making sure no stones move and all the hearting is in place to stabilize it all together 👍👍
Times like this is where your skill comes to the fore - time-consuming yeah, but the end result will be so worth the effort! Another great day in the office guys, thanks for the upload. BTW, from the background sound of chickens, my guess is that the smell is from fox crap? Can be really acrid in that sunshine!
Hi Josh, in general how much longer does it take you to lay drystone compared to using mortar? Assuming someone else is making hearting and mixing mortar. Thanks, Rick
I’ve got the same hammer I started walling with. A bent B&Q £6 brick hammer. To be honest I don’t buy many tools. I would just go off reviews and buy them as and when needed.
Knowing your meterage rate in each different method is key. So you have a rough idea the timeframe and how much your going to put down. Also knowing the site & stone etc your using, as chunky vs small stone will affect meterage. I do sub contract as well so sometimes a day rate is good.

Hey Rick. All depends on size etc but if you had the same size stone for example I reckon 2 days of dry is 3 days of wet on average for me.
May I ask where you buy tools? :)
And what tools you recomend for a beginner?

Curious as to why with this wall you are doing a lot more pinning than chipping off of the rocks. Insights as to why would be helpful …
It’s a very hard layered and mis-shaped limestone, not smooth at all. We call it glass stone as you can’t play around with it too much.
How do you figure your pricing for the different types of walls? Is it just by the hour or a bid?
