Fuel Pump Replacement 01 Ford Escape 3L

  • In this video I'll be showing you how I replaced a fuel pump on an 01 Ford Escape 3.0L. The method I use in this video is not “by the book". Its a method I learned from some fellow technicians years back. Its a great improvisation for when you don't have the right tool for the job. However, special care needs to be taken when removing and installing the retaining nut. Make sure the nut was not damaged in the process of replacing the fuel pump. Also, be sure the nut is completely seated after installation. Make sure it does not leak. Fill up completely with fuel after repair and check for leaks around the fuel pump retaining nut. After you have check for leaks drive the vehicle making aggressive turns. Check for leaks again. Check for leaks through the access under rear seat.
    Repair as needed. Note: Use the method shown for installing the fuel pump retaining nut at your own risk. The method shown is not the proper way to remove and install the retainer. You do run the risk of not sealing the fuel tank properly by doing it this way. This could result in a check engine light, fuel leaks and or fire. That being said this task can be done this way. It just takes someone with the mechanical aptitude to do it well without problems.
    Fuel pump diagnosis video is no longer available.
    Please note: Barbour's Auto Help makes no guarantee that by following the steps and information found in this video that you will make an accurate diagnosis or quality repair. This video is very superficial in nature and is only intended to assist you in diagnosing your vehicle.
    !!!!WARNING!!!!
    Repair your vehicle at your own risk. While this channel will always strive to give you the most accurate information regarding automotive repair it would be foolish to assume that by watching a 5-30 minute video you too will be able to repair your vehicle without any errors or risk to your safety or risk to others safety. Costly mistakes can and will happen. When performing automotive repairs there is a high risk of personal injury. There is also a high risk for EXTREME frustration. There is also a risk of damaging your vehicle. This channel assumes no responsibility or liability for any personal injury or property damage that may take place using the information found in this channels videos. It is absolutely imperative that you the viewer, and performer of said repairs, receive as much education concerning automotive repair and particularly the repair you are considering performing. While the videos featured on this channel do go into detail about particular repairs this channel does not claim that the information provided in said videos are 100% complete and accurate. YOU MUST HAVE A REPUTABLE REPAIR MANUAL FOR THE VEHICLE THAT YOU PLAN TO WORK ON THAT CONTAINS THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO PROPERLY REPAIR SAID VEHICLE. Follow all repair procedures as outlined in your repair manual. Compare the information in your manual with the information in this channels videos. Follow your repair manual over this channels videos. Follow all safety instructions and warnings found in your manual. Also, read and follow the instructions for any piece of equipment, chemical, or tool that you may use in any repair. Also, check out the owners manual for the vehicle you are working on. There is a lot of good, important, and helpful information that can be found in it. Finally, above all, do everything you can to keep yourself safe. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. WEAR IMPERMIABLE GLOVES. UNDERSTAND THE CHEMICALS YOU WILL BE EXPOSED TO AND GUARD YOURSELF FROM THEM.
    Note: Even the most educated, seasoned, and talented technicians, or mechanics, are still subject to personal injury and property damage while performing automotive repair. I say again, use the information found in this channels videos at your own risk. Repair your vehicle at your own risk.

    This is my second fuel pump for my escape in under two years, your video is the best help a person could ask for, clear sight of the details involved, combined with your commentary, makes it so easy. My problem has always been with the clips and tangs, I break those things all the time, so thank you for all the extra attention to that.

    Took me almost 30 minutes to put that blue ring back on after taking lots of deep breaths calming myself down...yes I think preheating the ring makes it easier to put back on which is a good idea...comes out easy enough but a frustrating to get back on...but the vid helped heaps thanks 👍

    Your video is A1 thorough and excellent.. Thanks so much! I'm in the UK and they want to charge me an exorbitant sum to replace the pump in my almost pristine Mazda Tribute 1800 4x4 2001 model. Looking at the condition of other videos in my search I can see that my vehicle is worth hanging on to.. So there is extra value in your vid..! :)

    Are there any Escapes that require removing the fuel tank? I have a 2003 V6 model in the shop and they told me they had to drop the tank to replace the pump. Of course its the weekend, but I will check with them on Monday (they have not started yet). Thanks so much for the video!

      I'm pretty sure you just pull the seat up like the one in the video.

    Thanks for the Video,
    I've got a question though. My 2009 Ford Escape's fuel pump looks slightly different. Do you have any tips for this year's model?
    cheers,

    they don't tell you that the ring is a bitch to screw back on straight

  • @kayewortman8759

    no strainer ???

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe I have info either in the video about this or in the description. Its been a while since I made the video, but I believe the strainer in integral to the fuel pump. You may want to read the description or watch the video again just to make sure. Or you can just ask your parts pro.

    Great video but you didn't show the hardest part which is to put the ring back on. And I'm badly pissed off as after numerous tries there's still a leak.
    Any inputs will be highly appreciated.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did show this. Watch the video from 11:15- 12:02. Also please pay close attention to the text on the video. Also, please read the entire description of the video as directed toward the end of the video. Hang in there pall. If you can't get is sealed properly it may be time to get some help from and experienced tech. Good luck to you. Be safe. Make sure that thing does not leak.

      Thanks for the reply mate. I have used the same method using a pry bar and hammer in the past too but this time it's just not happening. Even with an additional pair of expert hands.
      Strangely, it's the old blue ring which is refusing to go back at its place.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can be tough at times. The trick is to not let the ring get cocked. They like to cross thread. Sometimes it helps to take a 10 min break and then try again. Even I have problems with these at times.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure by now you've either done it or had someone done it for you, but if the ring won't go back, the best thing to do is simmer the ring in hot water for about 15 minutes, particularly in cold weather. The ring expands and starts threading much easier.

    ive now tried for over a week to get the locking ring screwed back on straight...
    its a son of a gun to line up the fuel pump correctly, hold the pump down while screwing the locking ring back on straight... ive now called my mechanic to come to my house to help me to screw this ring back on straight... this is a very very poor design by ford..
    my suggestion is ... pay to have the vehicle towed to your mechanic and let him replace the fuel pump... maybe he will know a trick on how to do the job...
