Honestly I am surprised some of the Word Bearers have not converted to the Imperial Church.

Primaris: how do they orbitsl assault? Pods surrounded by inceptors? How do the vehicles deploy? In Godblight they mentioned 100FT to deploy off an Overlord, but when i searched it previously /r/ stated they were dropped from orbit?

Has any chaos marine ever had second thoughts and at least tried to return to the imperial fold?

There has been quite the number of traitor marines who did like World War II Italy and switched sides ... most of them did it just because they had been following orders and didn't fully understand what they had gotten themselves mixed into, and when they started to comprehend they defected.
But those were not fully fledged Chaos Marines, per se.
Usually, once you submit to Chaos, there is no going back.

It’s a bit too late for that now. And I mean he was a god, or as close to it as you could functionally get, even when the Word Bearers were actually loyalists.
I mean what would be the criteria for being considered a god anyway? I think the Emperor would tick most boxes, don’t you think?

I think when it comes to GW, they will never do a loyalist/Emperor aligned Word Bearers story outside of the Horus Heresy. They like their moustache twirling villains too much.
However, if I were to write a story, totally and not because I'm a die hard Imperium fanboy. The Word Bearers are already very fractured in many respects and I see their history as a repeat of the Holy Church in real life. They're all on the same page about one basic truth: There are gods, they worship them as divine beings with infinite possibility within their creation, the realm of chaos. They want to cross the materium with the immaterium so that they can live in the very fabric of creation. But that's a wide net to cast. You have Word Bearers most commonly worshipping chaos undivided, but you also have Word Bearers devoted to individual gods or even specific daemons.
I think a story based around a Word Bearers conclave debating the divinity of the emperor would be interesting because the Word Bearers main objective isn't to destroy the Imperium and kill the emperor, it's to bring materium and immaterium together. The emperor would have achieved this and recognized this in himself, he would have achieved what the Word Bearers objective would have been this whole time in seeing humanity at the top of that hierarchy as the chosen masters of the warp. The debate is there to be made that by worshipping the emperor, they can complete their goals and see humanity ascended. But of course you'd also have Word Bearers that would say, probably in a majority "no, no, we don't want this to happen because we've fought the emperor too long we have to see this to the bitter end" and there would probably be a conflict of a sort, whether the Word Bearers brand this sect as heretics and enter into open conflict or if they're a tolerated sect if they choose to acknowledge the emperors ascension to the pantheon.
An interesting premise all the same, thank you for the video
