Phil, I just clicked on Cats in Space Father Christmas and told the lads I found them through you. They responded immediately that you were "a star and top chap with a great show!" I agree! Pat
Your appearances on SoT are responsible for bringing me to this channel. Based on many of the videos you have posted, you have a good thing going here. Nothing at all wrong with Christmas music - it's music at the end of the day, and quite a lot of it is great (to me, anyway.) Had a friend who was huge into Blackmore's Night - he gave me a copy of Shadow of the Moon years ago (great album.) Love Renaissance, same goes for Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Stax, etc. Oh, and I love me some Slade. Bon Jovi has many, many good songs, and I think that's what it all comes down to in the end - good, memorable songs. I had Keep the Faith on cassette not long after it was released. Haven't heard it in ages. Me? I've been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead (I recently acquired nearly all of their studio albums, plus a few live ones), and I've been loving each and every one of them. I've also been listening to things having nothing to do with rock/pop (Orthodox choral works, Sacred Tibetan chants, etc.) New subscriber here! Happy New Year!
Phil, thanks for sharing your great selection. For me, I've been going through your top 2024 lists (those that I have) plus a couple of ones you missed; namely Magnum and Saxon. Some Jazz with Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams Lifetime and in the car Humble Pie's Rock On to get me from A to B and back again! Moggs Hotel next then back to Sant'a prezzie, Hawkwinds Live at the RAH. Bostin stuff. Kind regards
Dear Phil, first of all I'd like to thank you so much for your wonderful channel and your always kind and sensible handling with music. I'm very much looking forward to 2025 in which "Now Spinning Magazine" will be a true companion. My favorite artist will always be the Canadian singer/songwriter Jane Siberry who has an impressive and very diverse but always interesting and charming discography. In 1997 she published a double live CD called "Child" which had been recorded at the New York City club "The Bottom Line" at the end of 1996. "Child" includes both original songs by Siberry and covers of more unknown Christmas standards. She is accompanied by an amazing band and wonderful female and male singers. The atmosphere of the record is very special and often moving and playful at the same time. I can only recommend it to everyone because it captures the joy and true sense of christmas.
I just got Ramones- “Brain Drain”(which includes “Merry Christmas- I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)so this week I’m spinning that and some other new purchases; Vanilla Fudge “Rock and Roll”, and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats “Nell ‘Ora Blu”(my number one album of 2024).
Hi Phil, only just watching this. Sorry to hear of Jon Camp who was a wonderful bass player. You recently did a top ten bass players video and I had no hesitation in placing Jon Camp in my list. Great to hear your raving review for Slade`s `Crackers` album! Not only the greatest Christmas album but also the greatest New Years Eve album! As well as the better known songs I really like `Here`s To The New Year` which is a great Slade `swayer!` Played lots of Xmas albums past week. Sinatra, Presley, Blackmore`s Night, Robbie Williams, Cliff Richard, Michael Ball, Michael Buble, Bing Cosby, Christmas Carol The Movie soundtrack from 2001, Elaine Paige, Moody Blues `December`(underrated!), Jethro Tull, Dean Martin, Glen Campbell, Sia, Sarah Brightman, Kelly Clarkson (two albums with `Wrapped In Red` being the best!)and several others. Happy New Year Phil. P.S. Did you see that Michael Buble`s Christmas album is no.1 again!!
Hi Phil love your videos been playing a lot of Free I’m trying to replace on cd also l agree with you about Rory I’m waiting for that on cd l can stream it but still want cd have a great New Year Tony
Hi Phil , Happy New Year, and i really enjoyed discovering and watching you're channel last year. Many thanks! Thanks to you're Christmas playlist I've now got into Rennasiance.. I'm mainly a rock / prog fan but I've just bought and am listening to a 5 cd box set by The Fall , ie Mark E Smith. Don't know if its a northern thing being from Manchester but I'm really enjoying it. Don't know if it's ever come on you're radar ! ?? Thanks 😀
Oh my...oh my...I can't stop playing the Rory Gallagher BBC boxset I was very luck to get on release, I have hundreds of box sets and nearly 4000 cd/albums in my collection, this is just stunning.....also , Opeth, Last Will and Testament is king masterpiece....keep on keepin on, with your fantastic channel....best wishes for the new year from Edinburgh..x
It's all about classical music this week. I received a Christmas card from a co-worker many years ago that contains a CD of The Nutcracker Suite. It's the perfect holiday music. Take care! 💿🎄
Totally love the enthusiasm you are bringing to the show today ❤😂 Thank you Phil . Your good vibes are giving me the feeling that 2025 is going to be a wonderful year . God bless Phil 🎉
"Since You Been Gone" was written by Russ Ballard and was released on his album "Winning" in 1976. Three years later Rainbow covered this song, and was very well-known. Many covers followed. My three top christmas albums are: - Bruce Cockburn "Christmas" - Triakel "Vintervisor" - Jethro Tull "The Christmas Album" I will look out for the Slade one, sounds interesting (but a little bit late for this year)!
Well as it was that time of year, last week, the Quo track, It's Christmas Time, the Twisted Sister album, A Twisted Christmas, and the Paul Dianno sung tunes, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, White Christmas & Silent Night from the Metal Christmas compilation CD I got back in the early '90s, have been getting loads of plays. I'm sure I'll be back to more conventional listening next week.
Thanks Phil, hope you enjoyed your Christmas….on the playlist today was The Kinks - Sleepwalker (cd reissue ), The Beatles - Beatles 65 (vinyl mono reissue) and The Fall - The Infotainment Scan (cd box set)
Another great episode with you Christmas week playlist it is really awesome but I've mainly been listening to old rock music from the 60's and 70's with a lot of classic British rock mainly here on TH-cam lately I've been listening to Manfred Mann, the Hollies, the Kinks, the Dave Clark Five, Genesis, the original Fleetwood Mac and other such music artists from the UK thank you Phil have a great weekend and a great music countdown to 2025.🎶🎶📻🎶🎶
Hi Phil, I've just recently dug out an old album from 1980 'Gamma 2' with Ronnie Montrose on guitar what a great record. The Doobie Brothers 'The Captain and Me', I play from start to finish at least once a month. The Doors 'Concerto' is a great listen thanks to Sue's recommendation. Happy New Year to you and your family. Cheers Mike.
Hello again Phil. You’re tops, and you always! make me smile. Father Christmas by The Kinks, The 12 Days of Christmas, by Bob and Doug McKenzie, Hosanna by James Dewar and Sweet Wine of Love by Robin Trower are my recommendations. Merry Christmas Everybody.
Hello Phil. I hope you and your family had a great Christmas! That Doors Concerto does seem intriguing. I might give it a listen. I have not heard that Rory Gallagher Live Album yet, thanks for reminding me about it. And yes, this is one of my favorite shows that you do on the channel. Keep it going in 2025. - Dylan
Another enjoyable video! You can't beat Slade. This week I been mostly playing... The Jethro Tull Christmas Album (Jethro Tull) Time Machine & Fire In The Night (Cats In Space), Moondance (Steven Wilson Remix) (Van Morrison), =1 (Deep Purple), An Hour Before Dark, Season's End (Marillion) Christmas With The Beach Boys (The Beach Boys) The Aslum Years 72-75 (Joni Mitchell)
Head East also, funnily enough, recorded I Surrender. Rainbow did their versions a year following Head East recording, and releasing them as singles. Maybe Blackers was a fan.
Christmas listening has been - Tull - Fresh Snow At Christmas Graeme Edge Band - Kick Off Your Muddy Boots ( one of my top ten albums) Ace Frehley - Ace Frehley ( only KISS related music i like to be honest) Derek and the Dominos - Layla and other assorted love Songs Tori Amos - Native Invader All the best.
Hi Phil Martins new Priest book is brilliant Amazon have it ❤. Would love to buy direct from his website but postage from Canada so expensive thesedays
I’ve been spinning Led Zeppelin “The Thulemann box set” the whole week. The Dynamic Range on this set is uncanny. Definitely no Loudness war on this set.
Hi Phil. I hope you and Sue have had a restful Christmas! My vinyl listen for today, is the new Unthanks album, In Winter, released in November. Recommended by a friend, I can heartily pass on that recommendation! 😊
That 1st solo effort from Mike Harrison and Junkyard Angel is "Classic" still listen frequently and as fresh as when it was released all those years ago Merry Christmas Phil and Mrs Phil
Phil, this is so cool. I love Christmas music but usually stick to the traditional stuff (I have that Phil Spector album). You have given me something new to chew on next year. One thing, could you please say the name of each album in addition to showing it? I was listening while on my walk and I had no idea what you were talking about when you would just say, "this one... this one... etc." Cheers.
I have become "Son of Multi-Format Man" with my new turntable and amplifier, and therefore my selections today are vinyl albums I have purchased (nothing I don't already have on CD apart from the Blue Jays album) but my love of music is reaching a whole new level. I understand the appeal of vinyl now: UFO - Strangers In The Night (new 2020 remaster) - I am 17 years old again having the sleeve in my hand and the vinyl on the turntable! Sparks - Kimono My House / Propaganda (new 50th anniversary editions) - Propaganda was the first album I ever bought, Kimono My House was soon after, it's a *JOY* to have these on vinyl. Strawbs - Grave New World (antique shop find for £5) Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus (antique shop find for £15) - my avatar on here from the inner gatefold sleeve says it all, the first ELP album I ever heard, and the best. Saga - Images At Twilight (antique shop find for £7) - I saw them at Reading Festival in 1981, this was the first album I bought by them, been a fan ever since. Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Trilogy (charity shop find for £1) Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (charity shop find for £1) Justin Hayward & John Lodge - Blue Jays (charity shop find for £1.50) In addition, some comedy albums too cheap to turn down: Monty Python - Another Monty Python record (charity shop find for £1.50) Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy / The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe - the radio show LPs (charity shop finds for £1 each) Thank you, Phil. I had been "umming and arring" over going back to vinyl for years, your channel was the "tipping point" and I am so pleased I did - such a joy to hunt through boxes of vinyl now! Happy New Year to you!
Hello, son of multi format man !! This is indeed how it starts. I bet a few weeks ago you could not see this ever happening. You love of CDs will not diminish but the view of your house and the room you have in it will change. I just want to say when your other half notices shelving / kallax cubes popping up everywhere or records leaning against stuff it’s not my fault! Seriously, so pleased you are enjoying your new turntable and you have made some fabulous purchases! Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Here's a question I'd love an answer to, now I think about it: "What is the appeal of vinyl to the younger generations when they don't have the nostalgia aspect to fall back on that we do?" It's not a loaded question or a critical one but I've discovered that part of the joy for me is going back to the first time I had that album in my hands and the "ceremony" and anticipation of putting it on the turntable to listen to it - like I said above, it's nothing to do with "does CD or vinyl sound better", it's the context in which you're listening to it that's important. Many youngsters clearly love vinyl (and great that they do), but without the nostalgia aspect why is that? I really am interested to know.
@@NowSpinningMagazine PS. I don't know if you follow Rick Beato's channel but he did a great video on the death of music genres just over a week ago and I think it absolutely "hits the nail on the head" when it comes to modern music. It's well worth a watch.
My youngest 20 something son loves vinyl. Started with streaming bought a few CDs and then went straight to vinyl during lockdown. Why does he like vinyl. He loves the different versions, colours, signed versions, packaging. He feels it’s cool, tangible and looks great. He likes the ritual of needing to make an effort to put a record on and then sitting down to listen to it.
@@NowSpinningMagazine Interesting and thanks for the response. I guess "the cool factor" is no different to what we had in the day ourselves - especially trying to "outdo our mates" in the pub with cool new finds that nobody else knew about. I can't speak for you or for others of our age but I think I am too old for "cool" now but replace it with "comfortable". But, yes, I do remember the "cool" part when I was of a similar age to your son - so good answer!
As many Christmas songs as possible as i dont play them any other time of the year so i go all out. The only other thing ive played is Icehouse which i had a best of bought for me. Music ive had as presents are Def Leppard Live at the Leadmill on vinyl. Queen The Miracle on vinyl. Judas Priest Invincible Shield on vinyl. Black Sabbath Seventh Star Deluxe cd. Black Sabbath Heaven & Hell Deluxe cd. Torme Vol 2 Boxset (which i watched your review) 👍👍
I've been playing Paul Heatons The Mighty Several (2024) And Nick Drakes Five Leaves Left (1969) Bryter Later (1971). I've finally got Nicks first two albums after playing his last one Pink Moon (1972) constantly for the last month. This was bought second hand but the first two of Nicks and Paul Heatons latest were from Santa. Kind regards from John the Rambler.
Hi Phil - Zack Wylde playing White Christmas, sorry I just cant see it 🤣🤣For Christmas I got - The Rolling Stones - Charlie Is My Darling. OK - so what have I been playing. Robin Trower - Roots and Branches, Warren Haynes - Man In Motion, The Rides - Cant Get Enough, Midnight At Notre Dame - organ by Olivier Latry, Eels - Beautiful Freak, PIL - What The World Needs now - and more. All the best to yourself and Sue for the New Year. Cheers Doug
Phil, thanks to your review of Songs for Broken Hearts by Beardfish I listened to that album and also their Sleeping in Traffic Part I & II. I had never heard of this band before but now l will be acquiring these albums. Once Upon a Time in The Desert by Brant Bjork Trio is a 2024 release that I hadn’t heard of until seeing it mentioned on Sea of Tranquility. It’s also now on my buying list. Miles Davis-Sketches of Spain, Sin After Sin & Stained Class by Judas Priest, Last in Line by Dio, and Stand! Sly and the Family Stone were also on my list this week. Glad to hear you’ll be doing these listening list videos weekly as they are my favorite. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well, Phil. Cheers.
Phil, playing all the Tony Martin era Sabbath albums, the recent Thin Lizzy 1976 box set plus Volume Four of the Joni Mitchell Archives. All Christmas gifts.
Phil just found a band called masque of art with there album masquerade great album don’t know if you have heard of them but if you have not highly recommended.
Keep up the good work. Been listening to Dom Martin, John Martyn, The Smile, and mostly my album of the year The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature by Crippled Black Phoenix. Give it a listen.
I don't care much for Christmas anymore, but the song "Christmas Day" by Shadow Gallery is wonderful. And now that I think of it, besides Roy Orbison's "Pretty Paper" (which is a secret track on a compilation), it's the only Christmas music I have in my collection 🙂
Iommi-Hughes Dep Sessions arrived vis U.S. Mail. That started me on a Black Sabbath Anno Domini Box Set 1989-1995 and then to check out Gillan-Iommi Who Cares 2 CD set. And Donovan to lighten things up a bit. May artists covered Donovan songs incl. Sammy Hagar, Neil Merryweather, King Crimson, Allman Bros. (Mountain Jam) & Deep Purple Mk1. Thanks for your ideas.
Been playing my Christmas presents (all vinyl) - the remastered version of "Animal Instinct" by Tygers of Pan Tang, "Diamonds" by Cats in Space and "Prismatic Idol" by Giobia - splendid stuff all of them!
Merry Xmas Phil. I've been playing - Chris Squire's Swiss Choir (which has some very classy versions of Christmas songs). Nazareth - best of. Brand X - Nuclear Burn and Clannad - Macalla.
The Doobie Brothers "QUADIO" box set is indeed FANTASTIC and for those NOT set up for quad, these Blu-ray's also have hi-rez stereo mixes as well. I also agree with you on your assessment of many of the newer recordings sounding more like "mono" and not "stereo". I find a lot of these recordings all sound the same (flat, no space/air around the instruments/tracks). I don't know if this is inherent with protools or being "brickwalled" resulting in a lack of dynamic range, etc.
Phil, Enjoyed the video ! Spinning this week newly purchased Rocka Rolla (Judas Priest), and added to my Mountain collection : Mountain Live, 2 cd set featuring West and Felix, disc. 1 is Flowers of Evil, disc 2, The Road Goes on Forever. I am still not sold on the box set as yet, due to mixed reviews on audio quality on some tracks. Plus On your recommendation =UFO Obsession 2 cd set ! Thanks for the video Phil all the best from the U.S.A.
I will start by saying what a fantastic channel, I discovered you nearly 2 months ago . I am a fan of Rory Gallagher ,I do get frustrated when his music is only out on vinyl like on record store day , I do not own a record player . I would class myself as being more pop than anything else , today as I type this I have been listening to Olivia Newton John , Carly Simon and Dolly Parton . I like the groups and singers who have been around since the 60s/70s and 80s. I hate the fact we are losing so many music stars . I am not looking forward to the day we lose Paul McCartney . On a final note I live in Chippenham Wiltshire and I am a five minute walk from The Eddie Cochran Memorial.
Hi Phil. My Christmas Day playlist was The Jethro Tull Christmas Album Annie Lennox Cornucopia Punk Aid Here's Your Xmas Captain Sensible One Christmas Catalogue King Kurt Slammers The Damned There Ain't No Sanity Clause Slade Merry Xmas Everybody 12 inch version Mud Lonely This Christmas Roy Wood and The Wombles I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Everyday plus remix version Andy Partridge My Failed Christmas Songwriting Career Saint Etienne Her Winter Coat
I've been playing my CD box sets this week. Def Leppard Volume 1, Samson Bright Lights The Albums 1979-1981, Warlock I Rule The Ruins, Helloween Treasure Chest, Kiss Alive 1975-2000, Van Halen The Studio Albums 1978-1984
Hi Phil, great playlist. Usually during Christmas days, I play Jethro Tull. The new version of the Christmas Album, Benefit, Thick as a brick and Crest pf a knave as well as Passion Play. I listened to some XTC, Pink Floyd, Genesis. and the latest from David Gilmour (my album of the year) Big Big Train, Ritual, Beardfish, Cats in Space.
Tbh Phil it's not for the feint hearted. I got it ridiculously cheap now I'm thinking I know why! It's an 18 cd career spanning predominately live collection. As I have to listen to my ~1700 cd collection (my rule!) alphabetically & then chronologically for each artist I've still got another 3 days of listening so hopefully I warm to Mr Cow. Keep up the great work & wishing you and your family a happy & prosperous 2025.....best wishes from the far north (St. Austell)😅 Chris
I would recommend the Head east Lp Flat as a Pancake. They are from my home time and this was there Breakthrough Lp and they Just put out a new lp by the way
I have been playing Trapeze Lost Tapes Vols 1&2. Vol 2 features Mel Galley’s last recorded work ‘Live Fast Die Laughing’ and some intriguing songs recorded with the same personnel that recorded the Phenomena debut. The songs production sound more ballsy! Keeping my fingers crossed for a proper remix of the Phenomena album in time for its 40th anniversary in 2025.
I have been playing a lot of obsure American bands which are probably not so well known here in the UK. The likes of Pablo Cruise, a lot that have been released by Rock Candy recods who seem to seek out all these bands. One of them being a group called I-Ten formed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly who wrote Alone which was a big hit for Heart. Yes Phil i think you are right , I Cheat the Hangman was the closest The Doobie Brothers got to doing prog.
I love the Stax stuff, but I wasn't aware of that Christmas album. I have the 3-cd compilation Soulsville U.S.A.: A Celebration of Stax, as well as comps by Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Albert King (also the Born Under a Bad Sign album) and of course Otis Redding. Overall, I've become a total soul freak in my late 40s/early 50s! I didn't play much Christmas-y music this time, but as usual, I did listen to Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker; I'm always amazed how many 'hits' that great piece of work has, i.e. tunes that probably even many non-classical fans would recognize. Oh yeah, I also played Nat King Cole's terrific 2cd comp Gold, which has his wonderful version of "The Christmas Song" on it.
The Robert Palmer set I do recommend. He was the first artist I remember listening to has a child and I got all the albums on Vinyl. I do need to pick up that set.
No actual albums on my playlist at the moment however I've been playing a couple of my all time Christmas favourites namely Run With The Fox by Chris Squire and Alan White and also Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl. Happy New Year everyone when it comes!
Gary Hoey Christmas music. Ho Ho Hoey. Rob Halford has two Christmas releases. Of course Transiberean Orchestra. Twisted Sister Christmas. I have those Christmas guitar disc. Steve Morse doing Joy to the world is my favorite. There was a metal release with Dio and Sabbath playing "God rest ye gentlemen" I heard, this was Dio's last recording. Dio sang two songs from Kerry Livgrens solo album "Seed of Change" Kerry Livgren was the backbone of Kansas, in their hey day.
I've only had a chance to listen to 2 albums in December 2024 David Bowie - The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust (1972) The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)
Music I listened to today: Pentangle - Cruel Sister Jethro Tull's debut Jean-Luc Ponty - Upon the Wings of Music John Cale - Slow Dazzle and one of the greatest albums of 2024, "Songdreaming" by Sam Lee
Quad is 4.0 not 5.1 still phenomenal. Warner Brothers used the CD4 Quad format. Columbia had their version of Quad. You could buy them on vinyl or the cheap 8tracks. Cassette tape was too small to fit four channels on it. Two great Quad albums by Columbia was They only come out at night by Edger Winter. Satana 2&3 Couple of Jeff Beck albums. Switched on Bach by Walter Carlos. The audio "Twits" hated quad. Musicians loved it. I love it.
To be pedantic cassette tape is 4 track 2 tracks on side a and 2 tracks on side b Also there I a tascam home studio recorder to mix 4 tracks at once on to a standard cassette... But as you say I don't think you can buy commercial quad recordings on cassette, but you could record them on a tascam 😉
PHIL Merry Christmas! Renaissance Bassiist John Camp Top Rickenbaker bass player / Composer/ singer Died tragically December 13, 2034 On the Renaissance FB site 1969-1979, I posted several Jon Camp pictures, interviews as tribute... I came into Renaissance 1975 with Turn of the Cards. Pronounced: ( SHEH- HAIR--EH-ZAD ) John Camp can be seen playing with ROY WOOD and the Helecopters Birmingham NEC 1985 charity show... My sister Cathy died on February 26, 1977. Our last concert together was RENAISSANCE FEBRUARY 20, 1977 Academy of Music . I played her favorite Renaissance song " OCEAN GYPSY" at her Eulogy/ funeral.... HORSLIPS: TOP album: Celtics Symphony ( book of Invasions) !
OK, temptation got the best of me. Lizzy got me a present of Ian Hunter's albums Defiance I and II. Then I bought Jon Anderson, Truth. I have put off buying it. Indecision got the better of me: was it just a Yes karaoke album, or another abhorrent reiterated band called Yes (by any other name)? Well, no! It is a great album and I like it a lot.
Jon Schlit from Head East went on to become the lead vocalist of Petra. He replaced Greg X Volz. I thought Volz had a better voice. One of the greatest of all time. Volz in latter years replaced Schlitt
I’ve been listening to the cures new album today..the Dolby atmos disc is the best sounding version..the stereo version has horrible dr clipping..great album shame about the mastering.
Phil, I just clicked on Cats in Space Father Christmas and told the lads I found them through you. They responded immediately that you were "a star and top chap with a great show!" I agree! Pat
Thank you for letting me know - they are great guys ! Phil
Nice comment!

I have that guitar Christmas cd with John Sykes. Good stuff even my wife likes. We also enjoy the Gary Hoey Christmas cds.

Great selection! Can never go wrong with Slade. I'm currently enjoying my folk rock with Jefferson Airplane and The Mamas and the Papas.

Happy new year Phil 🎉. God bless buddy
As far as Christmas music, I have been listening to Elvis Presley Christmas with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
"Since You Been Gone" was written by Russ Ballard and was released on his album "Winning" in 1976. Three years later Rainbow covered this song, and was very well-known. Many covers followed.
My three top christmas albums are:

I will look out for the Slade one, sounds interesting (but a little bit late for this year)!
Tonight I played:
Spirit - Spirit
Talking Heads:77
Destroyer - Have we met
Robyn Hitchcock - Love from London
Taken a few off your playlist ,Big big train ,and moggs hotel 🏨,stand out 🎸🎸🌹❤️
Well as it was that time of year, last week, the Quo track, It's Christmas Time, the Twisted Sister album, A Twisted Christmas, and the Paul Dianno sung tunes, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, White Christmas & Silent Night from the Metal Christmas compilation CD I got back in the early '90s, have been getting loads of plays. My entry point to Renaissance was Ashes are Burning. I should have kept my copy.
Hi Phil. You could recommend the phone book and I would listen to that.
I love you man 🎄❤️. I already subscribed brother.
Another great episode with you Christmas week playlist it is really awesome but I've mainly been listening to old rock music from the
60's and 70's with a lot of classic British rock mainly here on TH-cam
lately I've been listening to Manfred Mann, the Hollies, the Kinks,
the Dave Clark Five, Genesis, the original Fleetwood Mac and other
such music artists from the UK thank you Phil have a great weekend
and a great music countdown to 2025.🎶🎶📻🎶🎶
Thank you - Phil
- Dylan
For me:
1. The Who... Pinball wizard
2 . Husker Du.. Zen arcade
3 Sergio Nendes.. Equinox
4. Carole King.. Tapestry
5. Dire Straits . Making movies
Phil I played the new Jethro Tull book box set, Fresh Snow at Christmas. All 4 CDs have great holiday music.
I played Gary Moore, "Victims of the Future" 1984
My dad recommended it, and I loved it.
Father Christmas brought a MoFi pressing of Foghat's Fool For The City on vinyl.
Head East also, funnily enough, recorded I Surrender. Rainbow did their versions a year following Head East recording, and releasing them as singles. Maybe Blackers was a fan.
Christmas listening has been -
Tull - Fresh Snow At Christmas
Graeme Edge Band - Kick Off Your Muddy Boots ( one of my top ten albums)
Ace Frehley - Ace Frehley ( only KISS related music i like to be honest)
Derek and the Dominos - Layla and other assorted love Songs
Tori Amos - Native Invader
All the best.
Kelly Finnigans "A Joyful Sound" album.
Hi Phil
Martins new Priest book is brilliant
Amazon have it ❤.
Would love to buy direct from his website but postage from Canada so expensive thesedays
I’ve been spinning Led Zeppelin “The Thulemann box set” the whole week. The Dynamic Range on this set is uncanny. Definitely no Loudness war on this set.
Well I am playing the superb and you ne of the finest jazz albums ever which is the 2 cd set of Art Pepper Quartet Live In Stuttgart 1981.
Hi Phil. I hope you and Sue have had a restful Christmas! My vinyl listen for today, is the new Unthanks album, In Winter, released in November. Recommended by a friend, I can heartily pass on that recommendation! 😊
I will check it out
Have a great new year.
You too!
Shout out for Head East.....not liked all there output but do recommend Get Yourself Up and the self titled which features Since You've Been Gone.
I understand the appeal of vinyl now:
UFO - Strangers In The Night (new 2020 remaster) - I am 17 years old again having the sleeve in my hand and the vinyl on the turntable!
Sparks - Kimono My House / Propaganda (new 50th anniversary editions) - Propaganda was the first album I ever bought, Kimono My House was soon after, it's a *JOY* to have these on vinyl.
Strawbs - Grave New World (antique shop find for £5)
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus (antique shop find for £15) - my avatar on here from the inner gatefold sleeve says it all, the first ELP album I ever heard, and the best.
Saga - Images At Twilight (antique shop find for £7) - I saw them at Reading Festival in 1981, this was the first album I bought by them, been a fan ever since.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Trilogy (charity shop find for £1)
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (charity shop find for £1)
Justin Hayward & John Lodge - Blue Jays (charity shop find for £1.50)
In addition, some comedy albums too cheap to turn down:
Monty Python - Another Monty Python record (charity shop find for £1.50)
Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy / The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe - the radio show LPs (charity shop finds for £1 each)
Thank you, Phil.
Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Here's a question I'd love an answer to, now I think about it:
"What is the appeal of vinyl to the younger generations when they don't have the nostalgia aspect to fall back on that we do?"
It's not a loaded question or a critical one but I've discovered that part of the joy for me is going back to the first time I had that album in my hands and the "ceremony" and anticipation of putting it on the turntable to listen to it - like I said above, it's nothing to do with "does CD or vinyl sound better", it's the context in which you're listening to it that's important.
Music ive had as presents are
Def Leppard Live at the Leadmill on vinyl.
Queen The Miracle on vinyl.
Judas Priest Invincible Shield on vinyl.
Black Sabbath Seventh Star Deluxe cd.

Jon Camp great bass player. Sad to hear he passed away. Only Annie Haslam and Terrance Sullivan still with us from the classic line up.
I've been playing
Paul Heatons The Mighty Several (2024)
And Nick Drakes
Five Leaves Left (1969)
Bryter Later (1971).
I've finally got Nicks first two albums after playing his last one
Pink Moon (1972) constantly for the last month. This was bought second hand but the first two of Nicks and Paul Heatons latest were from Santa.
Kind regards from John the Rambler.
Love Nick Drake
Hawkwind's latest album 'Live at the Royal Albert Hall' ordered the CD but listening on Spotify, excellent quality recording really enjoying it.
Fab stuff !
Brand X - Nuclear Burn and Clannad - Macalla.
picked up fish era marillion singles on x3 cd's set at record fair today for £6 plus a few other goodies
Head East - Flat as a Pancake.... their best album
Hi Phil. My Christmas Day playlist was
The Jethro Tull Christmas Album
Annie Lennox Cornucopia
Punk Aid Here's Your Xmas
Captain Sensible One Christmas Catalogue
King Kurt Slammers
The Damned There Ain't No Sanity Clause
Slade Merry Xmas Everybody 12 inch version
Mud Lonely This Christmas
Roy Wood and The Wombles I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Everyday plus remix version
Andy Partridge My Failed Christmas Songwriting Career
Saint Etienne Her Winter Coat
Henry Cow 50th Anniversary box set!!!!!
I didn't know that existed
Tbh Phil it's not for the feint hearted. I got it ridiculously cheap now I'm thinking I know why! It's an 18 cd career spanning predominately live collection. As I have to listen to my ~1700 cd collection (my rule!) alphabetically & then chronologically for each artist I've still got another 3 days of listening so hopefully I warm to Mr Cow. Keep up the great work & wishing you and your family a happy & prosperous 2025.....best wishes from the far north (St. Austell)😅 Chris
Clout also recorded since you've been gone, it's on the same album as substitute, it's pretty good.
Thank you for sharing - merry Christmas
My Playlist, starts with the new Miles Davis - Almost Blue, also Dire Straits - Communique, Hiss Gloden Messenger, Uriah Heep - High & Mighty.
I've only had a chance to listen to 2 albums in December 2024
David Bowie - The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust (1972)
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)
Phil go to Robert Palmers CLUES album and play SULKY GIRL which has Andy Fraser on bass.
PLAY IT LOUD
Vampire Weekend only God was above us, Wombats, This modern glitch and glitterbug
Stampede is the best Doobie Brothers album in my opinion. I don't think there's a bad song on it.
Paul McCartney Ist album Elton John Street Kids, and a little Stevie Nicks, Sometimes it's a bitch, After the glitter fades, and a couple others
Music I listened to today:
Pentangle - Cruel Sister
Jethro Tull's debut
Jean-Luc Ponty - Upon the Wings of Music
John Cale - Slow Dazzle
and one of the greatest albums of 2024, "Songdreaming" by Sam Lee
Quad is 4.0 not 5.1 still phenomenal. Warner Brothers used the CD4 Quad format. Columbia had their version of Quad. You could buy them on vinyl or the cheap 8tracks. Cassette tape was too small to fit four channels on it. Two great Quad albums by Columbia was They only come out at night by Edger Winter. Satana 2&3 Couple of Jeff Beck albums. Switched on Bach by Walter Carlos. The audio "Twits" hated quad. Musicians loved it. I love it.
To be pedantic cassette tape is 4 track
2 tracks on side a and 2 tracks on side b
Also there I a tascam home studio recorder to mix 4 tracks at once on to a standard cassette...
But as you say I don't think you can buy commercial quad recordings on cassette, but you could record them on a tascam 😉
Call Me Spinster from Chattannooga - Potholes
I know you love soul Phil so please check out Eddie 9v. Polished and er, soulful but fiery live.
PHIL Merry Christmas!

The Steeleye box set is an absolute bargain, bought it on release because of the price, owned most of it on vinyl.
Xmas week Nightwish Yesterwymnde Phil Mogg, Cats in Space, Greenslade
Sergent Thunderfoot (2024
Os Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis (2024).
Happy new year
Cheers from Brazil
Jon Schlit from Head East went on to become the lead vocalist of Petra. He replaced Greg X Volz. I thought Volz had a better voice. One of the greatest of all time. Volz in latter years replaced Schlitt
I’ve been listening to the cures new album today..the Dolby atmos disc is the best sounding version..the stereo version has horrible dr clipping..great album shame about the mastering.
I need to give that a listen !
Queen 1 reissue
