I'd personally rather have a 9.0 A1 or B1 with color-touch resto (as long as there's no trimming) over a 5.5 Blue, but you didn't know the extent so it's understandable. From my experience, it's all about the level of restoration and whether it was amateur (with bleed-through from a sharpie) or professional/semi-pro (with colored wax or soluble ink). I remove restoration myself, rather than send the books off to anyone, but I've been in this hobby for 40+ years and I've learned how to do a lot of things along the way. *My criticism for CGC/CCS is based on the WAY they remove restoration.* There's not much that can be done with sharpie marks from C1 color-touch, you'll need to cut out the area that's marked, but A1 and B1 color touch can be removed with heat and very careful scraping (in the case of color wax), or light moisture and a soft cloth (in the case of soluble ink). However, rather than do that, CGC/CCS will CUT OUT ALL color-touch restoration, regardless of the type. I don't know if it's ignorance (unlikely) or a money thing (probably), but they don't want to spend the time to properly remove A1 or B1 color-touch, and I find that to be very destructive when it doesn't need to be. IMO, using an x-acto knife on customers' comics should be the LAST thing you ever want to do.
I like how you post your busts... People who gloat about all their victories and report nothing about the busts, dont present an accurate picture to the community. Great video! Bummer on the XM 94
Thanks Gary. I just learned to only remove light, color-touch resto from mid grade and lower books. This was a great video, very informative, and fun to watch (got me on an emotional level when I saw that 9.0 white drop to a 5.5...ouch). Love the content, keep it up!
When they remove the restoration it can really hurt. Generally the higher the grade the more restoration impacts the price. So a 9.0 restored usually is worth 10-20% of a blue label.
This is something people who are selling big collections don’t take in to account when they ask for an outrageous amount for their comic collection. A very nice informative video thank you good sir.
Yeah I think when you start removing paper and fibers/pulp just to remove some color touch it just makes a the book look worse and creates a different problem that just doesn’t have a stigma attached to it so it makes it ok. I’ll equate it to a classic car with a dented fender that was fixed with bondo. Now because someone noticed the bondo at an event, and knowing they don’t make authentic replacement fenders anymore; you take it to a shop and have it removed. All better now; you have a car with no fender. Perfect, problem solved. When it comes down to it I’d rather have a purple label than no book at all. Some of the color touch has history attached to it done by some kid or teen decades ago for reasons other than making a profit on bumping up a book’s grade level.
Very Gary! Great informative vid. I know I would bite my nails after waiting that long. Lol I think you did the right thing, especially with Daredevil.
So "restoration removal" for color touch means "cut the color touch areas off the cover" ? And the "color touch" was not even noticeable with a black light? That all sounds kind of terrible to me. I don't really like slabbed books in general but can kind of see why people prefer a blue label. At the same time if it means cutting parts of the cover off to get, I think I'd be okay with slight color touch...
might have been said before but I think books like xmen 94, marvel spotlight 5 etc are notorious for color touch. that dark cover! also it makes sense that since 94 was high grade 9.0 there was a better change of it taking a big hit vs daredevil at 2.0. the Daredevil was totally worth it!
Great video Gary , thank you. It has always amazed me that ink and date stamps from newsstands back in the day, when they completely mar a cover are ok with everyone, but a slight ink mark that IMPROVES eye appeal is not. If grading companies were not in our hobby, which would all of us prefer? 😀….thanks again!
Totally awesomeness of a video Gary. I feel it's more of an honest and true grade in the blue!! Thanks so much for sharing 😊 👍 ♥️ 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🎉 🎊🎉🎊🎉👏👏👏👏🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉💯💯💯💯
Great video, I have a bunch of purple labels I have been thinking of sending in, this is great data! I will say I think I personally would prefer the 94 in 9.0 purple versus the 5.5 blue. Keep the videos coming!
Great informative video right down to use of the black light. I did not know that restoration removal involved that much paper removal. That scares me. I think I'd rather have the color touching which IMPROVES the look of the book than the removal of pieces which DETRACT from the look of the book, purple label or no purple label. But maybe that's just me.
Still going through the restoration to get a blue label is a great call. Once X-Men come to the MCU, you would have wanted to have the lower grade but blue label. Incredible patience and great video. If nothing else, it fosters a sense of trust knowing they are presented as unaltered.
extremely interesting video its like the old saying ...nothing ventured nothing gained cheers Gary for having the guts to do it and putting it altogether Stevey g uk
I enjoyed the video regarding the process of restoration correction. And thanks for giving us the values of the differences between purple and blue label CGC slabs. Much appreciated, Very Gary!
Interesting video. I've often wondered what was involved in the restoration removal process. i never would have imagined that they would just cut it off!!! I have a Marvel Family #1 graded at a 0.5 blue label because of some glue on the spine. It technically should have had a purple label because the restoration is mentioned on the blue label. Probably would have been graded higher with the purple label. So, in this instance, should I just let it be since it's a blue label or take the chance in having the restoration removed? I can't really see it coming back lower than a 0.5.
Tks Gary cause I'm going to bed less stupid tonight...I really didn't know that a higher grade purple label would be less than a lower grade blue label...stay safe and keep it comics!
Hey Gary great video! Thanks! I have a Sig Series Restoration comic, to fix it do I just leave it in case and send it in to protect the Sig designation?
very intriguing bud i liked it thats really taking the time to learn yourself and aswell as teach us who wanna know everything there is to no you always have the good numbers behind your research trust me i know i learn from the best so undercover over here in little M***E got the goods all due to people like you our deffects fam our jernos fam or camictoms fam our buellerbus fam people that do this i admire nice work guy god bless ya
You did touch on this in the first part of the video - but when you went over the values at the end you do have to factor in your costs for the restoration to have a fairer comparison. Need to show the fuller business case with all grading costs and expenses against expected selling price if you try the restoration option. I realize your acquisition cost of a book in general you may not always want to reveal or you may not have one if it was obtained as part of a collection. So I know that piece won't be included.
Gary, thank you for this video. Always curious about restorations and CGC. The X-Men #94 was a punch gut. Glad you are always positive. That made me feel better for you. If you are good with it, so am I. 😉
I have a Silver Surfer #4 that is immaculate. Has a cgc 3.5 qualified for minute color restoration. Was thinking of having it removed. Thanks for information Gary
Don't assume CGC is right about anything. I sent my Black Panther #2 (first Shuri) to CGC. After 11 months in their hands, I recently got the book back with the wrong volume listed on the label with the wrong book details. I had to send it back and now I'll wait another year to get it back.
When you say "cut out" do you literally mean they cut on the cover or it looks cut out but they used a tiny dremel sander and sanded the surface of the cover off taking out the color touch?
Really interesting video. Great job. I'm thinking that restoration for color touch on high grade books in general is going to be a much bigger hit on the grade then restoration on lower grade books. Simply because at lower grades, more defects fit the grade whereas you can't cut pieces out of a cover on a 9.0 and get anywhere near that grade. Cover pieces missing are going to get you at best 7.0 and likely something even lower depending on how much they cut.
I've been collecting since the 1970's and I remember a time where restored comics wasn't that big of a deal. Now, everyone wants graded blue label comics that they can't even read. Personally, to me, it isn't that important if it has mild restoration done by a professional.
Glad on the DD 1 and X-Men 101, but I'd rather have a X-Men 9.0 purple over the the 5.5, I think the 9.0 purple would be easier to sell as well, as those white patches are quite ugly and off putting, at lease the 9.0 looked right with the colour touches.
I'd personally rather have a 9.0 A1 or B1 with color-touch resto (as long as there's no trimming) over a 5.5 Blue, but you didn't know the extent so it's understandable. Great vid Gary - I've always wanted to see this process
If actually want to see the process, boy do I have a channel for you: Jerry the Jitterbug Comic Book Collector.
Great video Gary but that x-men 94 makes me cry. The spine chips are very distracting. The purple label was gorgeous.
💯
Great video. It is painful when they hack up the book to remove color touch.
Fantastic video. Go Blue!!!
Awesome video. Thanks for taking me on the journey.
Thanks for making this video Gary! Very informative and enjoyable to watch.
I like how you post your busts... People who gloat about all their victories and report nothing about the busts, dont present an accurate picture to the community.
Great video! Bummer on the XM 94
Love the video. Excellent before and after.
Thanks for sharing this process! It took time and money, but it was worth it!
Love these before and after vids you do.
Great video again! I think we all learned a lot again!
Great video, nice to see all 3 examples and what restoration removal can look like.
I just did this with a FF 49 & 50. It's been months that I've been waiting...expecting many months more!
Awesome video...always wondered what restoration removal was like!
Super interesting, thanks for taking the time to do this.
What Gary says IS Gospel...great vid
I don't know about other people but I really like this kind of video.
Loved this informative video!
Nice vid! Interesting process. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Gary. I just learned to only remove light, color-touch resto from mid grade and lower books. This was a great video, very informative, and fun to watch (got me on an emotional level when I saw that 9.0 white drop to a 5.5...ouch). Love the content, keep it up!
Great vid Gary
Ive been trying to see a video like this for a while!
That was very educational. I never owned any purple labels
Great video. Ty for all the info!
Nice get to see what the differences are. 👍
Very informative video. I have a JIM#84 that has some amateur restoration on it…not sure I want it getting cut up. Thank you!
Great Video! Helps us get an idea for our own restoration removal submissions. Great job on the Daredevil!!
You did the right thing.
I didn't realize that they actually cut portions of the cover off. That's wild.
Awesome video Gary
Fantastic video Gary!
These are three best kinds of videos! Good info here.
Net positive for sure, even if that Phoenix stings.
Dude that takes balls but you did good . Glad we got to see the whole process
Thanks for the vid Gary! Awesome information to use!

Congrats on the DD #1!!!!
Fascinating video
btw, this is a terrific and fascinating video. thanks for producing it.
This is something people who are selling big collections don’t take in to account when they ask for an outrageous amount for their comic collection. A very nice informative video thank you good sir.
Not bad.... DEFINITELY learned from this 🤓
Excellent video, Gary! I always wondered about @cgccomics restoration removal service. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job on the Daredevil #1!
Great Job on the Video!
Really cool video. Well done on the DD 2.0 blue.
Be sure you are using a ( short wave ) ultra violet light.it does make a difference.
Thanks!
Seeing how they remove the restoration, I’m not sure if I want them to cut little pieces out of my two purple label books.
Yeah, I would think you could possibly use a small sanding bit on a Dremel tool and sand off the color touch.
Yeah I think when you start removing paper and fibers/pulp just to remove some color touch it just makes a the book look worse and creates a different problem that just doesn’t have a stigma attached to it so it makes it ok. Very Gary! Great informative vid. I know I would bite my nails after waiting that long. Lol I think you did the right thing, especially with Daredevil.
Gary, Great Vid…I got my own Purple X-Men #94 that I plan on sending in to CGC. It was helpful to see how the process works.
So "restoration removal" for color touch means "cut the color touch areas off the cover" ? And the "color touch" was not even noticeable with a black light? That all sounds kind of terrible to me. I would agree. Cutting out color touches on a cover would seem more harm than good.
Yeah rediculous. They should use some chemical to remove it.
I have a 2.0 Blue Label Daredevil 1 as well. Awesome.
Haul yeahhhh
Excellent video, thanks for putting this together over several months. I’ve learned quite a bit.
And thank you for the croc things. Smh. Haha
Very interesting and cool video! Congrats on all the blue labels!

Honestly I think both are fine and heck I think the process OF CUTTING THE BOOK is honestly worse than the color touch itself.
Totally awesomeness of a video Gary. I feel it's more of an honest and true grade in the blue!! Thanks so much for sharing 😊 👍 ♥️ 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🎉 🎊🎉🎊🎉👏👏👏👏🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉💯💯💯💯
I might be in the minority, but I would have preferred the 9.0 purple for my PC
Video was great. Really appreciate you taking the time to make it. Personally I would always go for blue over purple.
Thank you for sharing it was very interesting. Just some chances in the end was a good learning process.
Great video, I have a bunch of purple labels I have been thinking of sending in, this is great data! I will say I think I personally would prefer the 94 in 9.0 purple versus the 5.5 blue. Keep the videos coming!

Love these types of videos with the before and after. Any more details on the restoration removal and photos is super intriguing too!
Great video and yes i did learn alot about this process thanks for doing this 👍 😀 😊
If I wanted a book and could only afford it in a purple label I would still buy it but I would crack open the case and put in Mylar with a full back
Nice video.
extremely interesting video its like the old saying ...nothing ventured nothing gained cheers Gary for having the guts to do it and putting it altogether Stevey g uk
Thanks for showing us the process. I have a couple purple labeled books (nothing high dollar) I might experiment with.
I enjoyed the video regarding the process of restoration correction. And thanks for giving us the values of the differences between purple and blue label CGC slabs. Much appreciated, Very Gary!
Going to do this on an X Men 6 that came back with a back cover tear seal.
Interesting video. I've often wondered what was involved in the restoration removal process. i never would have imagined that they would just cut it off!!! Tks Gary cause I'm going to bed less stupid tonight...I really didn't know that a higher grade purple label would be less than a lower grade blue label...stay safe and keep it comics!
Id rather have a 9.0 purple than a 5.5 blue. Just my opinion.
In theory you are supposed to send the labels back so they can update the census.
Hey Gary great video! Thanks! I have a Sig Series Restoration comic, to fix it do I just leave it in case and send it in to protect the Sig designation?
Not a fan of cutting out pieces of the cover. Very interesting video though. The DD was a big win!
I have a restored ASM #40 I was considering sending for restoration removal, might do pull the trigger now after these results
the label of death.
very intriguing bud i liked it thats really taking the time to learn yourself and aswell as teach us who wanna know everything there is to no you always have the good numbers behind your research trust me i know i learn from the best so undercover over here in little M***E got the goods all due to people like you our deffects fam our jernos fam or camictoms fam our buellerbus fam people that do this i admire nice work guy god bless ya

This was my plan all along I just forgot to add it in at the end. I honestly don't know what I paid for the books because they came in collections.
The DD1 - the staples appear Rusty or is the light hitting the metal and creating an optical illusion?
Great vid! I like these kind of vids to show this process, never used CCS before, great grades!
Gary, thank you for this video. Always curious about restorations and CGC. The X-Men #94 was a punch gut. Glad you are always positive. That made me feel better for you. If you are good with it, so am I. 😉
I absolutely LOVE these vids where we don’t have to wait 😂🙌🏼
How do you remove pricing sticker residue from a comic cover?
I have XMen 94 c g c 8.0. Never pressed what would it be worth
I have a Silver Surfer #4 that is immaculate. Has a cgc 3.5 qualified for minute color restoration. Was thinking of having it removed. Thanks for information Gary

I'm not exactly sure how they do it but the books have missing pieces
😭😭😭that X-men 94 hurts
That X-Men 94 hurt my heart but at least overall it worked out fir you.
Interesting to see the process and results. That X-Men 94 is a guy punch though. Cutting pieces out of the cover just isn't an improvement to me
