Brand and logo matters. You’re the mascot to your sound. What you said is key. Don’t imitate trends, set trends that define you. The image is like the smell of a chef’s cooking, the taste needs to be there but by the time you smell the aroma you already like it or don’t. Good looking is your worst enemy if your personality turns you into the evil prince in people’s eyes.
There was a band back in the 80's called Sigue Sigue Sputnik or something like that. The leader of the band chose his members based on looks and attitude. His reasoning was that you can teach anyone to play an instrument but that you can't teach attitude. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. But it can't be denied that a great attitude goes a long way and on the flip side that there were plenty of shredders and scale gods that never made it out of their hometown back then.
The image definitely has to be original, appealing in some way to the target audience and simpatico with the music and lyrics. A good example is Van Halen 1. Fit the music perfectly. You should see the one they almost got stuck with. People do listen with their eyes and back then, the album cover was about all you had to get your image across. TV, magazines and posters only factored in if you already got over that first hump on the road to success.
@@badbrad They looked like the got busted drinking in the park and the cops took their beer. The one they used let you know who's who and what's what, had a great color scheme and an iconic logo. Set the vibe right from the beginning.
I always noticed The Cars, especially at first, wore the same colors. They always seemed to be wearing black, white and red in various combinations. Early Duran Duran had the New Romantic look and later on well tailored blazers and slacks. The Ramones - what else- leather jackets, jeans and sneakers. All great styles to look at and imitate back in the day.
Spot on! Can’t get the other guys in the band on board. Seen shorts, Crocs, same T shirt for 4 weeks, holes in shoes and look like just come from cutting grass. Just don’t get it. I am trying to get the rest of the band to understand this but not having any luck
It's tough for this generation to keep a mystique around them. Music streaming services absolutely destroyed the posterity of music. I'm not sure we will ever have another rock god. However if there was a SRV or EVH jr rise up they would have to maintain a persona and never break character on social media.
When you said “Dragging and kicking” that resonated with me. I had a guitarist who was a great player but was just clueless about image. It was nothing but t shirts and jeans for him. Keep in mind this was during the late 80s and early 90s. I tried everything with him and he just fought me every step of the way. Eventually I just gave up. He was just a straight laced guy. Anything that even suggested flamboyance or attention grabbing he rejected. I guess he just felt embarrassed?
i agree 100 percent ☝️ very important to be styled right. if you want to be taken seriously, i think presentation makes a huge difference, as you said, even if in a grunge or punk band.
😂😂😅😅 The Hamburglar. Im still chuckling about that one. Rabbelrabbel. Glad you didn't say his partner looked like The Grimace! BTW, I know a lady who is from Williamsburg.
I like the idea of having each member be their own cartoon character. I’m in the process of starting a band rn and I’m definitely going to talk to the guys about it
Absolutely. People who are fans need a "Look" to identify with since musical taste is so personal, the identity of the fan is what is being established, because fans have a need to find where they fit in the world. Sports is another sphere where this happens- If you like the Chiefs and want to be part of the club, you buy a Jersey, T shirt or a hat. Some folks even fly flags outside their homes of football teams etc. People get really fierce about their "Tribe"...It's a psychology that gangs recruit and get loyalty with..Politics...Look how polarizing that is. Most folks are only minimally acquainted with the issues and real policies of candidates, but if they have a D or an R next to their name...well...Stones VS. Beatles. Yo.
Reached me badbrad- I'm in a band that is sounding better and better picking up some steam but has no logo or image.. we need to work on defining that if we want to really move up. When a group is a collection of individuals it can be hard to let them be themselves but also blend together as a sort of single unit.. how do you bind together a wide range of ages and bodies/styles instrumental approaches.. I'm gonna have to ponder this.
...just put a KFC bucket of Chicken on your head. / I love the Poison/Bobby Dall Quote always getting called out on musicianship he says: "I set out to be a Rock Star and that is what I have become."
One thing I can say… if you wear a kilt on stage, especially if you sit down for part of your set… put on some underoos, whatever the Scottish boys say😂
In the 90s seeing "rockstars " in t shirts and shorts looking like the kids in the audience was disturbing to me....almost like a sin that took away the show and the special.
I agree. I was fronting a band in that era and the whole Grunge anti fashion thing was a huge reaction to the “Hair Metal” that came before it. It got overly militant. I remember I would get eye rolls and sarcastic remarks anytime I wore something that even hinted at being showy or Rock n Roll. The irony though was the whole Grunge look became a uniform of its own! If you werent wearing flannel Shirts and half pants over thermal underwear you weren’t hip.
I really dig a lot of the 70's fashion, when bands like the Spinners would wear those matching powder blue velour tuxedos with huge collars and big bow ties and stuff like that...I mean, you'd look kinda' ridiculous dressing like that on the street but, you needed to dress like that onstage to really stand out.
@ they are country rock/southern rock. Incredible vocalist. I’d recommend im still fine, ramblin, killers, wanna be loved, and the song that blew them up was called “Wondering Why”!

Man, I hear you, that's a tough spot to be in.
im new to your channel. excellent!
those pictures are the best lol.....
Glad you found it! 🙏
You’ve got a great eye for marketing. I’d say advisor/manager/coach/producer if you found the right talent, would be a great niche
Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

That is a really good point! It is tough to make something cohesive out of individual parts. But it can be done. Take each guys thing and magnify it.
