@AddYuki Yeah, I've also been diagnosed with Aspergers and I didn't laugh at Sheldon initially. Now I think he's one of the funniest characters on television.

6:52, I think he realized just a little too late what he had done :P Look at that genuine smile!

Cold facts on the table: Sheldon has Asperger syndrom! At least I prefer to believe that.... I have Asperger myself, and see a lot of traits of Asperger in the character of Sheldon. Let me point out that Sheldon is much smarter than I am!! :P

Ok, I wrote that comment before seeing that he actually answers the question haha. Well, I think they just don't want to limit the character any more than his OCD and phobias limit him from doing things. He has no problem looking people in the eye, but I guess not all symptoms would be the same anyway...

Of course Sheldon has Aspergers, it's not up for questioning, but I think the producers have chosen not to label him because it's still quite a touchy subject if you know what I mean. So many people doesn't know what Aspergers syndrom mean so it would only confuse people. Some still seems to think it's some kind of axmurderer.
I just lost a job because of it. Wish I was even more smarter than I am, I'm still replacable. Dammit.

@takineko I felt like Sheldon was a very exaggerated form of people with Aspergers. Of course, this reason I say this is because many people with it learn how to hide the symptoms and how to act in standard social situations. Sheldon never had the opportunity to learn these.

Here's the thing. I'm not denying he could have Aspergers, but most TV characters are like caricatures of reality. They took a real person, someone with OCD, a high IQ, and phobias and stretched it to a slightly unrealistic degree. It reaches the very realistic view of someone with Aspergers, but that doesn't mean that's what they were going for. He might show to have abilities uncharacteristic to the disease later on.
