    Despite contrary belief, all of them are very capable musicians/songwriters. While The Monkees was a tv show set up well in advance with songs being submitted by and featuring many soon to be famous musicians behind the scenes (Boyce & Hart, Glen Campbell, Carole King, Neil Diamond, etc.), the Monkees themselves were the key to the band's sound thanks to Mickey's fantastic vocals. Even on the 1st album, Mike wrote/produced Sweet Young Thing & Papa Gene's Blues & Peter played guitar on them.

      @SassaFrass28 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually, MONKEES was a TV show. Dolenz said that after Dave’s death. Their songs were written by other people & none of them were highly accomplished with instruments. They had good vocals, were cute guys and started the BOY BAND concept. BEATLES were REAL musicians & songwriters NOT A BOY BAND. Nothing wrong with the Boy Bands concept but the truth is always relevant.

    The guitar solo was actually played by Louis Shelton who was in the original Monkees backing band The Candy Store Prophets which was a Boyce & Hart produced group. Nesmith had to fake playing this in early videos and the closeups were edited in with Sheldon actually playing.
    When the Monkees popularity boomed, they took over creative control and played their own instruments with some session musicians supporting.

    @Jody07984 The producers allowed these guys to do a lot of stupid things that lack credibility. This is clearly a live version but not as they are playing it. Mike has a 12 string electric guitar and Valleri is played with a 6 string as far as I know. There wasn't the level of musical maturity with the audience back then as there is today. Most people
    can shoot holes through these videos but it still brings back such awesome memories
    I had as a kid. What a music explosion it was!

    This recording and film of "Valleri" was made in *1966* and appeared on the TV show's first season. The version released on the '68 album "The Birds & The Bees & The Monkees" is a re-recording with added horns and a more intricate guitar solo. Personally, I prefer this early, "rougher" version.

    @cinematic35 Mike never played guitar on any versions of this song (probably why he hated it so much) The riff and song were played by Louie Shelton from Boyce & Harts Band The Candy Store Prophets. According to Andrew Sandovals Book" Monkees Day to Day History" Tommy Boyce said They were at RCAs Hollywood studio in May of 1965 doing some recording, at the same time the Rolling Stones were there recording Satisfaction, and his inspiration came from the Keith Richards riff.

    @MechoMadness Sure, all it takes is one song and this is it. A fantastic love song, featuring Davy playing very capable acoustic rhythm guitar to a song that he penned. It may not be your cup of tea, but I think many would say this is a wonderful song (and that's coming from a Maiden fan!). It's been performed with several different guitar and sax solos throughout the years depending on his bandmates, bet rest assured that Davy has total control of this song and how it's performed.

  • @elfhermie
    @elfhermie 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @rmp0012002 Not true. Peter was one of the guitarists on the first album. He played on Sweet Young Thing and Papa Gene's Blues. Also, Mike wrote and produced those two songs. This shows that even from the get go, the two "veteran" musician Monkees, Peter and Mike, were involved in the creative process. Meantime, Mickey and Davy, as actors, belted out songs with more emotional storytelling flavor than many so-called real band singers. The fictional band became real & still performs today!

  • @downix
    @downix 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Hope2009pc There are at least 4 versions I know of, two of which used the Monkees themselves playing all instruments. The difference between these two is in how much Mickey's singing was mixed in with Davy's. Frankly, these versions are my favorites of them, demonstrating how good Mike was with the guitar, something not often demonstrated.
