Since I heard about meshtastic a couple months ago I had also found out its use in atak and was really intrigued, so much so, I was thinking about a way data like images could be sent over the network. Found a couple videos that came close
@@aparker9622 if you need high bandwidth meshnets you're much better off going the Ubiquiti mesh AP with AREDN firmware route. Meshtastic can't support video links and even images are gonna stress the network.
My advice, not just for SHTF and preparedness but for life in general as an adult, is learn how to do everything you possibly can, well enough to do it on your own. The more stuff you can do proficiently, the more valuable you are as a teammate and the more resilient you are as an individual. I grew up on a farm, know basic mechanics, basic construction, ie masonry work, electrical work, plumbing etc... I can cook, have built out more AR15s than my fiancé needs to know about and am very well versed at living in the woods for weeks on end. There's still TONS of stuff I both want and need to learn. Never. Stop. Learning.
@splatterkat3838 nothing wrong with specializing. Especially if it's something useful like medical stuff. You just don't want that to be the only thing you're good at.

I have been a drone pilot since 2008. The drone world has gone through multiple generational shifts basically every 18 months there is a new industry. That drone he bought is absolute garbage, if you even want to see if a drone is garbage go look at its release date and price and calculate that drop. Crappy drone pilots for some reason want you to fly their crap craft in the hopes they can share parts with you and buy your craft when you’re done…lol. I dislike China, but I respect them, if your going to buy Chinese product and you didn’t choose the dji it’s like you had a Glock on the table with a high point and you chose the high point, then you made a video about why that’s a good idea… this content is packed full of cringe. He also breaks 4 faa rules, and has deleted my previous comments which at one point had the most likes . He flies a drone during a forest fire with no contact to actually emergency response, this could literally kill people, but most certainly misdirected an actual pilots flight path, they fly a drone at themselves and over themselves , this drone is not registered, and it must be, for 3 seperate reasons, it’s over 250grams, this is a part 107 operation, if no one has a part 107 this is illegal, even if they did it is not properly displaying its reg, nor is it broadcasting. Not every pilot follows every rule the faa puts out but we at least know of them and how to navigate a conversation so as we are not helping a fellow pilot self incriminate. Most drone pilots are punished via self incrimination of not knowing the rules, there is no court room scenario that takes place you are simply fined , you do not have the ability to object as you likely think you could. There at least 20k worth of fines, they also explained how there”thermal “ works wrong…it’s not even a thermal unit… t-Rex arms and Garand Thumb have been spot on with there content I literally am in a room full of drone pilots and we stood up and clapped for there iterations with a resounding group “THANK YOU” as they actually told you clutch information in that content you need to know. Assume this content is at least half wrong in every point it presented. Good luck on your journey pilot , I will see you in the sky!
Here in CA. Illegal to pilot a drone at night. Illegal to use NVGs or thermals to hunt. Probably even illegal to watch this video… Update: thanks for the advice everyone. I never thought about moving before. I live in Idaho now.
well im also in CA and Im your new cell mate too... I own a hobby store and sell drones and I tell my customers to tell the FAA to pound sand on the daily. I dont comply with BS laws or rules. AND please for the love of everything holy DONT BUY A DJI no matter how cheap they might be. There is hundreds of companies making these drones that are open source. Or better yet learn and build your own it is NOT as hard as it sounds. I built one 15 years ago that did waypoints and all the cool stuff that todays drones do before DJI even existed or knew what fallow me was.
Y'all are flying DJI? I thought the DoD mandated US made aircraft haha we've been following the DoD guidance in the land management agencies. We only have a few DJI M600s left sadly. We're mostly flying Parrot Anafi and Alta X
Just got a dji phantom 4. Now I’m looking at doing a 10 inch long range fpv build with all the right tech. Don’t underestimate the cheap fixed wing foam rc planes like the skyhunter. They can be outfitted for long range fpv very cheaply. The long range radio receivers are $40 and fpv cameras are cheap too. In this modern age your gonna need to know how to run a soldering gun as well as an actual gun.
Go with 7 inch, 10 inch drones are a pain in the ass to tune, and just aren’t as smooth. There is also more aftermarket support for 5 inch and 7 inch drones.
Y’all should team up with Isaac Botkin and do a crossover of civilian Atak and which drones you can do split screen recon while using Atak. Just more in depth of the coverage you talked about. This knowledge taught to the public likened to a child’s understanding is helpful and so crucial for this valuable skill.
I've been flying UAS for over a decade. The technology has come a loooong way. I have a "tactical" background, and my primary purpose and use of UAS platforms has primarily been for recon & intel gathering, though more recently (now retired) I've been getting into ground & aerial videography. Two weaknesses touched on... the ability of state level agencies to track and disable a UAS, as well as the need for a power supply to recharge the batteries. If it goes to SHTF, both may become significant considerations! One word of caution... any device emitting an electronic signal can be tracked, monitored and/or jammed. Comms, UAV, GPS, ATAK...
Aaaaand that’s why if you download ATAK you need to accept the terms and conditions that it has access to camer microphone photos data etc at ALL times. NOT just when the app is open. Doesn’t help that their support email is a .gov lol
@@dothedewinme They need all of those permissions because that's how software works, and it is only when the app is running. They only run while it's minimized like if you're in a different app with ATAK still open in the background or have your screen off. If you close out of the app, the processes do not run in the background.
Thermal is very handy in the day time, too. When I flew Apaches, we switched back and forth between day TV and FLIR to scan for targets. As a hunter, I've also used a hand held thermal to find small game after I shot it and it ran into thick brush. Good video.
You sir, are at the top of an awesome list. One of my favorite games was the Apache PC game...can't imagine flying one of those spaceships in real life...also yes, handheld flir for tracking and predator management is effective.
Catch22mania here on TH-cam is using tiny fpv cams like a $40 foxeer nightvision or the $220 inifiray p2 pro thermal cam on cheap $100-200 drones and getting 10+ mile range. He’s also putting the cams directly on the fpv goggles to make cheap thermal and night vision NODS. What dirty civ doesn’t know is a $100 sky zone video scanner can pick up his video feed. Even the enemy. Learn to run a soldering gun in these modern times.
@@patrickpendergast898 thank goodness I learned how to solder and build FPV Drones. I have about 10 but I need Goggles and a Transmitter so I can fly again.
i have this exact drone. i use it often to locate & identify wildlife/predators at night (bobcats, coyotes, boar, deer, owls, osprey, weirdos etc). launch it up to 200-400 ft, use "hottest" mode to see the heat signatures stand out while scanning around. then navigate it to the object, use something that gives more detail like "black hot" mode if needed. if you're worried about someone shooting it down or noticing it, just use the option on the handheld to cut all of the lights etc. I get ~30 min out of the batteries like was said in this video, definitely nowhere near 40-45 min unfortunately. battery goes down much quicker when you're recording too etc. i've actually crashed it a few times in adverse conditions and it still runs fine, it's surprisingly strong. it's been well worth the money for me.
We all slept on our rights surrounding civilian drone ownership. I’ve pleaded to people to pay attention and got scoffed at. The 2018 FAA reauthorization act under Trump gave teeth to the FAA to regulate drones. Came with forced registration, weapon laws, and now remote ID laws. Imagine remote ID tech in your guns. Drones are a tool of both the 1st and 2nd amendment and we better start acting like it. The 0-400ft air space will be filled with walmart and amazon delivery drones with government backdoor spy cameras basically over our heads 24/7 if we don’t wake up.
Already on the downhill side of that slope unfortunately. Skydio isn't helping matters none in their push to corner the market on government contracts at the recreational flyers expense.
@@TKO593 four states already banned in government use and drone act of 2023 was already signed at federal level to take effect December of 2025. Now you have 3 Republicans who sponsored HR 2864 and just that passed out of subcommittee to ban DJI (and all other Chinese made drones) FOR EVERYONE. So unless someone like Elon with deep pockets is going to be the push to keep it from going to a vote in the house and senate it’s not looking good. Plus 90% of DJI owners don’t have a clue about basic rules of flight, or care to learn, as proof in the comments. Apparently that makes you a “sheep” 👀🤣🤷🏼♂️. Just wait until there’s no forrest for the wolf to hunt in 👁️🤣🤣😎
i'm working on a fixed wing setup. i can get hours of flight time with small footprint, sadly not as easy to move around as quads. Don't underestimate fixed wing options, they will be really good too.
I agree don't sleep on airplanes. They can be made quieter than your typical quad copter, which is important for a recon drone. Hell, if you use a glider you can make it damn near silent (use a glider with a motor though, so you have a motor when you need one). Bonus points if you can build one that resembles a large bird, like a hawk or a vulture. Then you can just have it glide in circles above whatever area you need to survey with the other birds, using air currents to stay airborne.
@@nickfury1279 it’s funny timing you said this, I’ve been playing around with the glider mode in arduplane for a couple weeks now and it’s wildly useful for quiet long duration surveillance and it seems you don’t even need a glider style plane to benefit from it although it helps obviously. The flight controller just turns off the motors when in position and hunts for thermals all by itself, I usually get about a 30 min flight time on my small vtol but I did a 63 min flight last weekend using the soaring mode, so the tech is out there.
What “squads” you talking about ?? These sound like Klans , militia groups , terrorist organizations, gangs??? Didn’t realize it was legal to gather klans and plot out to kill
In south Africa many famers or boers have community commandoes/watch groeps. Quite a few i know incorporate a vehicle team with thermal drone capacity. Especially in dence bush at night time. It is incredibly valuable to detect ambushes and follow ups. We use them in anti-poaching aswel
I wish people stopped talking about Ukraine and looked more at South Africa. The bs they have to deal with is a lot closer to what we will be facing. However it's very hard to get any information on their situation aside from a few occasional twitter posts.
@@Snarknado5 I don't care so much for the fake war manufactured by the EU so they can control more European countries. I spent enough time in Ukraine back during the civil war to know it's an entirely pointless conflict. South Africa is very different though. While it is true their issues also should not be our concern, the same organizations that turned it into a mess are using the same tactics here in America over the last two decades. So South Africa is kind of like a sneak peak into our future.
I’m a 61 y/o combat vet, after 2 heart attacks and the beginning stages of leukemia my infantry days are definitely over. That realization is a bit more difficult than it sounds. Anyway, I got my first drone a few months ago. It’s a DJI avata. I’m hooked now and will be looking to upgrade soon. This one goes up to 400 meters. Iv got a couple videos of it on utube. This one has goggles and a hand control device that makes it seriously easy to fly. It’s almost grunt proof. I’m thinking about going thermal to help find lost people way up here in northern Maine
Funny that you mention it, I am the number one recon in the entire world on Battlefield 4 (PC) because of the MAV drone. Everyone underestimated spotting, and all the other things that it can do but they are absolutely a game changer when it comes to winning the game.
For the purposes of WORL, it's better to make the drone yourself instead. It's cheaper (about half the price with the same thermal sensor), you actually know how it works so you can repair it and use the cost savings to stockpile spare parts, and the most important part is that you can keep the VTX separate from the drone. For example in Ukraine the second someone turns on a drone, an artillery shell is immediately fired on their position. This is why the Russians didn't go with commercial drones like Ukraine but instead went entirely hobbyist builds so the VTX can be turned on in mid flight so any shells fired are in a location where no one is there.
That payload dropper could be VERY useful in a Search & Rescue situation. If you locate a missing person via a Drone, you could drop a beacon light to help ground personal locate them.
yes but you can mark the point on your map and send the exact longitude and latitude to the rest of the search team. it's better for delivering the drone hating neighbors a beer once and awhile so they know it's a friendly. my neighbor's all have drank sky beers but have no idea who they came from lol
You can patch patch DJI firmware to avoid limitations of no-fly zones. Also, you can setup a dummy GPS module to bypass the restrictions to avoid tracking through the DJI-s backdoors.
I work for our local water company in my county, in Central NY. One of our water tank sites has a recently-built tower with sensitive equipment that (I was told) tracks drones.
DJI makes a system that jams their drones, Russia is using them against Ukraine right now, and most likely the other was around as well. that's the direction I'm looking to go, being able to jam enemy drones seems like it will be way more valuable asset. I do have a couple drones as well. but I want to have on hand and the no how to be able to stop enemy drones from chasing me around with a grenade on board. if it's the government, which is likely they'll have some serious drone power
@@richardhemingway9773the military would more than likely utilize the MQ series drones. Much harder for someone to detect, jam or attack it. And they can launch a range of ordnance on you from far away.
Been running this drone for about two years now and it's awesome. It's a game changer for hog hunting and like you mentioned it is entirely possible to push/herd animals into an ambush with it. Ive got a few videos on my channel doing just that for those who don't believe. It's also surprisingly tough. I've accidentally flown mine into a few tree branches and even a power line with nothing more than a few broken propellers. It's not cheap but it's worth every penny
I work in the drone space. I think the one facet of this people forget about in SHTF sorta situation is being in a GPS denied environment. If there is anything like an EMP not only will the platform be useless( unless it was in a faraday cage during the pulse) but we will likely see an end to the GP satellites. There are plenty of systems available, most open source, that can walk you through a build of your own with nearly the same utility and more functionality. Its what Ukraine has been doing to avoid GPS jamming. I live on about 2.75 sq/miles and use a home built rover and a multirotor on our property for everything from keeping an eye on our fence lines/livestock to checking on my kiddo when she is camping. There's a learning curve but being able to operate a drone that was never needs to "call home" to the manufacturer for an update is nice.
04:55 *"The Sonoran Drone Instit... Sonoran Desert Institute"* Pretty much correct, because they had the foresight to add "Aerial Systems" to the curriculum!
I like the idea of having a "Tech" in the squad that is a radio and drone operator. I work in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) which is the fancy term for Map IT. Satellite imagery is GIS, Google maps and earth are GIS. I also joined my state defense force to help with search and rescue. I feel like drones would be something I could use in my career, as a volunteer, and as an armed prepared citizen. Being a civilian RPK gunner is only helpful in a specific SHTF scenario whereas a drone is useful in SHTF and in normal circumstances. My second specialty would probably be as a medic since I used to be a lifeguard and part of me has wanted to be a paramedic.
The problem with DJI and I don’t know if it’s the same with others, if you don’t login with your id, it will limit the range considerably. I believe DJI is 30 meters from takeoff. If the fit hits the shan there probably won’t be much cell access or chinese servers available to authenticate the account. Might be worth a test. Happened to me this weekend.
Meshtastic doesn't have the bandwidth to send video or pictures. It's best to build your own drone more security and privacy then you can put whatever optic you want on it
I would love to see a poll on what people find more attractive to invest in. 5k for a drone setup or 5k on a night vision setup. And hearing out the pros and cons.
I think it would depend on what your situation is. If it is like a natural disaster than drones are way better to survey your surroundings as well as your exit route. If you are fighting a war drones really won't be that useful due to electronic warfare unless you yourself also have those same assets (which we won't really have as civilians). Spending 5K for a drone though isn't necessary. You can 3D print a quad for $200 and you can use a cheaper 256 thermal core sensor running of a raspberry pi for another $300. Also binocular NVD are pointless, just get a PVS14 from TNVC for $3,500 and be done.
My MAG has this same Autel drone. We have a fleet actually. It’s imperative for our community security. Im the certified Remote Pilot for the group. Highly recommend it.
All of the off the shelf drones that are worth it for prepping/defense, are able to be remotely shutdown and/or prevented from takeoff, and your location tracked and forwarded to the enemy in real time. You really have to learn to build your own from scratch. Then you can change up frequencies to avoid EW jammers, install Meshtastic nodes, not get location tracked, configure offensive capabilities 💥, etc. Off the shelf is arguably lost money at this point, unless you’re just talking everyday drone work, but for prepping it’s not going to work.
@@adamd6644 that’s a good idea. I was able to get a couple of the mavic gimbals on amazon for cheap. But I put an analog low light next to a thermal on it, works pretty good through 1.3ghz but it’s still analog, but being able to switch back and forth rapidly is pretty good at spotting heat sigs.
Hey tacticalfpv, thanks for the advice. Would you be able to recommend good online guides &/or various resources where to start self-educating on how to build my own drone? I’ve been biding my time & holding off buying one the last several years, but was about to finally get serious & that’s how I found this video. However, your comment is one of a handful who seem to highly recommended a DIY approach for prepping & this makes immediate sense for a variety of reasons. About the ham radio issue and natural disasters --- usually what happens is an announcement goes out > requesting < that people not > transmit< on certain frequencies unless they are involved in the emergency communications support. You are free to listen in on what's going on, just don't interfere. Also, there is a basic principle with ham radio that if human lives are at immediate risk and there is no other means to get help, do what you have to do to save lives.
Learn rc planes, get radios with fhss and those systems, get good with it, learn relays and mount flir thermals. I am working on 2 drones (one a large quadcopter with about 40 pound payload and one high flying drone with thermals)
I have my drones license, it wasn't as bad as getting a private pilot license but it still sucked donkey balls , Duke engery paid about 60,,000 then 4,000 for the laptop , 15,000 for the articulated camera then 6 exta batteries in a charging case that was about 7 or 8,000 , i did ariel surveying smoke stack and power line inspections not to mention the software, all together about 100,000 and a new F250 super duty lol 😅
I thought this would just be another drone video but this was actually very informative. I thought thermal drones were wayyyy out of budget but the capabilities this thing has is impressive
I've been wanting to get a drone myself, i just think it could be a massive asset in a shtf scenario. But rather than just buying one I want to build my own, probably an FPV drone. I've built ARs, have built my desktop computers for over 25 years, etc. I can do the little soldering that's required. And it'll be way cheaper and I'll be more familiar with the unit and how it works (and how to fix it). It wouldn't be thermal but i imagine you could put a thermal camera on one and it would be a lot less than $4k. Haven't looked into that aspect of it yet though. Was just planning on a regular camera on it (at first anyway).
I got a dji mini 3 pro for daytime recon. For $1000 it has great range, a great camera, and decent fly time. It is also an ultra light aircraft (249 grams or less) so yyou don't have to register it with the FAA.
@@Brotherman94 Be careful when using "prohibited" stuff on drones you didn´t build yourself. ATAC is interesting, however the big problem with it is the OS that your using. During a SHTF or civil disorder you have the problem of location because it's a phone. They (Gov) will use that against you.
That's why we use tablets that have no radios. Or, we use RF blocking on the cell phone. If you haven't tested this on your own, it's fairly easy to inhibit the radios on the cell. Also, it's not perfect, but a custom rom can help a bit.
I think your point is valid. RF signature as well as digital "Footprint" make us all susceptible. On the other hand, if "They" come looking for us then that saves us some work 🤣
*Most* SHTF situations would arise because the government is no longer functioning (or is otherwise preoccupied). The government isn't going to call in a cruise missile on your FPV controller because you're using it to see if it is safe to travel during civil disorder or if you're Mad Max-ing it against other warlords in a grid-down wasteland. So it covers most use cases IMO.
Finally someone does a video on the drone I've been looking at!! Not really any prepper based vids of the Autel drones with thermal. Thanks! You guys covered a lot of great info, many things I didn't even know about these drones. One thing Im very curious about you didn't mention is tethering ability. I'm a Ham, and running a antenna and power cable tethered up 50' or so would be great. I guess you just need to be under its "payload max" with the connections and wire and have power in receptacle on the drone... Oh and just thought too if this is possible, you would be able to remove the battery from the thing increasing its max payload too.
Just so everyone knows, you can't just go and get a side hustle with a drone without the proper certification. You need to take a test from the FAA in order to be get a commercial drone license. The test costs about 175 dollars last I checked, requires a bit of studying and revolves mostly around airspace rules. Now get out there get git it!

Being x-spec cool guy- I know that most prior military want to keep civilians away from being prepared and trained up. They do this by ridicule and making adverse comments. Most active military could care less because they are busy doing their thing with the latest tech and training. The prior/retired military are usually repping their former glory days where most would be hard pressed to keep up with their former selves. So being obsolete, outdated, they try to make everyone believe they are still dangerous and relevant when the more likely reality is that they are more proficient at drinking, etc then they are at their former skill set. And that's if they even were in that 1 percent that they want everyone to believe they were in. Which is highly unlikely. Most of the guys that I went to basic with could barely move out of their own way much less be considered high speed. Either way - this channel and ones like it are proof that if you are not training you are being passed up by todays new civilian warriors that with use of todays tech, some money, motivation and an ability to get off their but - put in the reps and train can be every bit as good as or in some case even better than any prior or active military, spec war operator etc. This is an idea that really bothers former warriors especially the ones that weren’t that good in the first place and even the ones that were but have worked more on their 12oz curls than they have on their prior skill set. This is why I came up with my better than a SEAL protocol where anyone that is reasonably physically gifted, mentally gifted as well as tech savvy or at least highly motivated to learn and train, has a fairly good budget and can access top tier training - with a lot of luck or a good plan from maybe a very creative “x-cool guy” CAN become as dangerous as they want to be. I myself will be getting one of these units or something similar along with delving into training with an ATAC capability and look to replicate to boost my group going forward. Thx to these guys at dirty civilian and others like them I can stay informed and put in some work to stay trained up and help others do the same. We give to much credit to titles, when sheer will, belief that you can and with some education, some money and a whole lot of effort - you can become a formidable force. Or you could just listen to the x military hater that says “hey you can't do that, what do you think you’re military?” “What do think that you’re gonna put together a team and actually do something?” When the fact is - damn right you can. Quit hating and start training or be left back with the sick lame and lazy (basically chipping paint) Evil beware - we work in the dark to preserve the light. Train up gents - Hoo-Yaah 217
I agree with your assessment on egos. The mission is more important than the "glory". I'm assuming you are talking about ATAK? Whatever you do, don't use that or other smartphone programs or the smartphones themselves. EUDs used in the military are sterilized by the NSA, they lack the spyware on the hardware and software side, and you won't know how to remove it because it is a felony to release information on federal malware which is present in all computerized devices. This is also why I really don't suggest using commercial drones either. You should be making them yourself. There are many militias at the southern border who don't even use radios except in emergencies due to cartels having feds working for them with cyber warfare capabilities. Coordination is done entirely old school by phases and triggered by some event, time, or periodic linkup.
I'd add that, when operating a drone in the US, drones that weigh more than 250g like the one featured here require a license and registration from the FAA to fly. Additionally, if you're operating drones of any size, you also have to (a) submit a flight plan and request LAANC authorization if operating in a controlled airspace, (b) have an observer with visual line-of-sight on the drone at all times, (c) stay below 400ft above ground level, and (d) you cannot fly above groups of people or EMS activities. There are a bunch of other regulations, too, that you'd want to keep in mind while training to use these prior to some sort of broad-scope emergency scenario.

I just want a drone that’s hardwired, one that you can send up 40-50 feet for observation, and not have to worry about all the nonsense associated with wireless technology. Seriously, playing around with a drone, and 99% of it is just sending it straight up for a birds eve view of everything in the immediate area.
We do this for our drones we make for military bases. It’s called tethering make sure the drone you’re using is large enough to carry an electronic package worthy of such a pursuit. You also should probably have 8 props 4 mounted underwing Ala a cinelifter.
Balloons are big and bulky, or you have to inflate them with an external canister. I’m talking, take a knee, open your pack, plug in your wire to your controller, and send a drone up 40 feet. Look around, land it and put it back in your pack and move on. @@boboso7238
Battery life, meeting up, the drone itself, and all the other logistics that would go into training people how to pilot a drone can actually be resolved by getting a free drone simulator and using a game console controller to learn the basics. the best drone simulators are pretty cheap too ($20-30 max) so even if you don’t have access to a drone, you can still learn.
Things like drones, thermal, night vision, guns, optics, the high-end versions, are all unjustifiably overpriced. These drones prbly cost the manufacturer under 500 dollars to make when they do so in bulk
Yeah, but they're not done in bulk because most of the things you mention are quite niche. Also these are businesses that want money. I'm not trying to defend it, I'm just pointing out how it works.
I Love flying drones. I live in an area with rugged coastline. Drones are an absolute game changer on learning the geography of the area, I have even used these to find and explore WW2 ruins, find places that no one really knows about or to scout ahead to determine the best approach when traveling through the jungle. It is freaking scary how stealthy the Mini drones are. Thermal Imaging would be great too. Maybe for my next drone? $$$
In my experience conservation officers, like most cops, have horrible tactics. Any competent woodsman generally sees them way before they see him, let alone someone with nods thermals and decent fieldcraft.
@@HanzHermannHoppe Also the other issue is that they are active during hunting season but virtually absent outside of those times. It's one of the reasons the cartels are infesting our forests with grow operations that LE doesn't even know about until a regular citizen calls it in.

A few places allow scouting, but very restrictive on when and how it can be done. Herding can also be subject to harassment regulations under state Fish and Game, even if it's your own livestock, depending where you reside.
Yes, I highly recommend anyone who is interested in flying a drone to please actually get your part 107 license. There are a ridiculous amount of rules and regulations that carry hefty federal penalties when violated.
I knew a trucker that would throw his drown up when traffic through the mountains was at a standstill so he could see what the hold up was. There’s a big difference between a vehicle accident and the road being blocked or damaged by a rock slide. He could then decide if back tracking to take an alternate route would be worth it.
Comparing the capabilities of a drone to the advanced amateur photography camera bodies, most drones are underpriced or Canon and Nikon has be over priced. I have been a professional photographer since 1976. I have my Private Pilot Single engine land instrument plus a 107 license. I know it's is hard to justify spending money on items which are tools which you don't use to generate revenue. On the other hand, what hobby or avocation will cost you less than what is presented here? A boat? A four wheeler? Reloading equipment? A tractor and implements? The list goes on. If you truly see the need, buy one. My first drone was Autel because DJI screwed the pooch with the military contract and China's Cloud and the very real question of unknown entities possibly gathering signal feeds. The US military dropped them like a hot potato and mandated all of their drones be removed and scrubbed any DJI programming off of all equipment. DJI counted and started really sucking up to the fears of the government and the public and this is why Geo-Fencing limitations on DJI equipment came to be. I chose Autel because they had promised to have interchangeable cameras with different mission capabilities. I jumped on it early and Autel broke their promise and failed to bring this successfully to the market. They had issues with smooth flight operations as for as video movements without a jiggle. This was not from a bad camera sensor with a lousy rolling shutter but from a tracking standpoint. The interchangeable camera idea never made it to market. Their lenses had an odd lens flare which people called a carrot. I didn't find it offensive nor did my clients but the criticism of the market just killed Autels first attempt to break into DJI's market share. Autels first drone was extremely loud too. This was, just guessing right or more years ago. As for as advances in technology from then to now, I expect these are long solved. My point is to point out how difficult it is to exist as a manufacturer in this market which DJI dominates in Market Share and some darn good technology at a ridiculous affordable price when all are seen for what they are and their capabilities Could not wait on Autel to bring their technology up. My second drone purchase was DJI but I truly gritted my teeth when I did so. I don't like DJI and don't trust China and would rather not support their economy. What choices do we have. Even if the product is designed State side, the list of products made in China which we use is ridiculous. It is grand to learn that Autel is staying with the philosophy of being able to adapt the drone via accessories to specific missions. This is how I choose a camera body with different lenses as needed. This appeals tremendously to me. This capability will come with a price. Not because it is price gouging its s because of market share and making enough profit to exist as a business. DJI brilliantly partnered with Hasselblad and Sony, for heaven's sake, two of the best and undisputed leaders in the imaging world. What serious photographer would not then gravitate toward DJI? Autel has chosen a tough row to hoe. They keep banging away and battling DJI's almost monopoly on the market. I have to admire them for that. Their first foray into the market failed but they did not give up. Their products deserve serious consideration.
Glad I saw this... I was about to watch the whole thing... I'll just get a fuckin thermal scope with a recorder.. tape it to a regular drone.. and watch it when it gets back..
You're wrong! I definitely need a thermal drone! LOL In all seriousness, I definitely agree with the sentiment that you should start with a cheap drone. Get the feel for it then upgrade little by little. I've smashed a number of $20 drones, a couple several hundred-dollar drones. And even my current Air 2s once or twice. However, I'm constantly learning and getting better. This one seems like a decent middle ground to an M30T for which I so desire. 😁
Meshtastic + ATAK = Live drone feed is not currently possible. That is not to say a "MESH NETWORK" cannot handle it. Granted, radios get much bigger. Beartooth radios can (supposedly) finally send images but the price tag is around $25,000 for 10 RTG radios. Meshtastic with a drone can increase coverage area but does not handle photo/stream feeds. This was a good video that can help emergency responders and preparedness minded folks learn about knew tech and force multipliers. The wording on the meshtastic/drone feed was misleading though. I LOVE ATAK, I really like meshtastic, I love the drone for our SAR operations. Know that there is a reason that ATAK stands for " **ANDROID** Team (Tactical) Awareness (Assault) Kit". If much of your group/team uses iPhone, expect issues. The video was good enough that it earned a sub from me.
Fantastic content! I love that you are approaching every angle of a team. As an old fixed wing pilot, my ears perked up @ 7:35. With all of the legislation that was passed in the US regarding drones, don’t you have to have a commercial operator’s license to profit on your work- just like when you’re getting your fixed wing from the FAA? I’m not pointing fingers, but just trying to understand. Admittedly, I haven’t kept up with drone laws like I should. A very close friend is commercially licensed to fly drones for oil/gas and electric. His favorite is a $95,000 VTO fixed wing that has a ridiculous range, but the optics on it are next-level as well…
Nobody's mentioned all the issues DJI has had with the government lately, or their terrible lack of software support. I had a DJI maverick I was just getting good at, then I upgraded my phone and it no longer worked, now they're embroiled in a low key battle to be allowed to sell in the US. I'm definitely gonna look into Autel!
Im wondering if they will go after Autel next! IF its about "security" then that should be the case. Although i see it as nothing but a way to shut down the #1 player. Most likely pushed by lobbyist! They throw all kinds of 'pork barrel" into Bills so why not put all Chinese drones in the bill if its about security?
Something I just learned, DJI drones upload video clips and still images to their servers for "quality control" reasons. Also, if there is a bios update the drone can be grounded until that update is installed.
I was a drone operator using a CAD program for a mining company. We flew magnetometers on a 4 click grid over and over. Our drones cost 30k a pop and yes , you will destroy them from time to time. So, be prepared for that. Also, you now need a pilot's license to operate commercially.
About the being tracked thing I've heard that there are a few Eastern European experts that have a particular knack for getting around certain restrictions. I think that you'll find they are also very experienced at dropping things as well as flying into things :)
Being a prepared citizen on this topic also means understanding the FAA part 107 regs. As a pilot and drone pilot, all too often i see commoners busting airspace and thinking they can fly their drone wherever/whenever they want.

Crappy drone pilots for some reason want you to fly their crap craft in the hopes they can share parts with you and buy your craft when you’re done…lol.
Comms, UAV, GPS, ATAK...

i'm working on a fixed wing setup. i can get hours of flight time with small footprint, sadly not as easy to move around as quads. Don't underestimate fixed wing options, they will be really good too.
Take a look at the VTOL planes, HeeWing T1 or T2 for example, a plane that can stop mid flight and hover.
Not to mention way greater payload capability...

The drone would make an invaluable team asset. $4k? worth every penny.
Worth way more pennies.

Really great points. Would love to pick your brain about this. Shoot us an email at team@dirtycivilian.com.

Pretty much correct, because they had the foresight to add "Aerial Systems" to the curriculum!

It's best to build your own drone more security and privacy then you can put whatever optic you want on it
Do you know how to do that?
Got a buy list?
I would love to see a poll on what people find more attractive to invest in. 5k for a drone setup or 5k on a night vision setup. And hearing out the pros and cons.
NVG first. Because I can do more things with NVGs than with a drone.
@@065Tim have to agree with you. It's what I'm working towards now. But drone is definitely next
Dedicated night vision, more practical by 10000% for the average person and I own and two drones lol.
Nods first, drones second
I think it would depend on what your situation is. If it is like a natural disaster than drones are way better to survey your surroundings as well as your exit route. If you are fighting a war drones really won't be that useful due to electronic warfare unless you yourself also have those same assets (which we won't really have as civilians). Spending 5K for a drone though isn't necessary. You can 3D print a quad for $200 and you can use a cheaper 256 thermal core sensor running of a raspberry pi for another $300. Also binocular NVD are pointless, just get a PVS14 from TNVC for $3,500 and be done.

Can get alot of usable parts right off the shelf tho 🧐 just reconfigure the drone 😅

Hey tacticalfpv, thanks for the advice. Would you be able to recommend good online guides &/or various resources where to start self-educating on how to build my own drone?

About the ham radio issue and natural disasters --- usually what happens is an announcement goes out > requesting < that people not > transmit< on certain frequencies unless they are involved in the emergency communications support. You are free to listen in on what's going on, just don't interfere.
Also, there is a basic principle with ham radio that if human lives are at immediate risk and there is no other means to get help, do what you have to do to save lives.

Was just planning on a regular camera on it (at first anyway).
that's the smarter option honestly, especially since these expensive drones can often be remotely disabled by the manufacturer

@@paull3278 I really agree with this. The people we most need to worry about in SHTF are locals whose morals were already shaky.

Or you could just listen to the x military hater that says “hey you can't do that, what do you think you’re military?” “What do think that you’re gonna put together a team and actually do something?” When the fact is - damn right you can.
With ATAK you have to remember the RF that it emits and what that entails down the line
Could you explain what you're hinting at? Medical? Security? What point are you making?

"I'm really looking forward to you playing with it more too" @17:35
I'd add that, when operating a drone in the US, drones that weigh more than 250g like the one featured here require a license and registration from the FAA to fly.
Unless fpv there is very few plans, especially non commercial that REQUIRE a visual observer.

My point is to point out how difficult it is to exist as a manufacturer in this market which DJI dominates in Market Share and some darn good technology at a ridiculous affordable price when all are seen for what they are and their capabilities
Could not wait on Autel to bring their technology up.

I like the DJI Matrice 30T.
