bro had me rooting for every successful hotkey building! he did a great job and i hope he keeps at it. beating all the AI difficulties is a huge achievement!
Learning hotkeys is one of those things that you look back on like "how did I ever exist without this?" But it takes a huge effort to get there in the first place. I still pressed HCCA from muscle memory after not playing the game for ~15 years. I don't know what A was back then but I can't unlearn it.
Shift queueing is probably the or tied first best thing to teach new people IMO, 'build house-go back to ___" is a life saver for keeping idle time down. Especially that crucial first 30 seconds. Queueing the house builders to the sheep and waypointing sheep with the TC gives you much more time to micro the scout so you don't have to pass twice on sheep or have him go way off course because of a tree line.

This is the kind of video new players learn from! It's informative and accurate while not being affected by your own skills and speed, which can quickly make it look advanced despite you trying really hard to tone yourself down. ;-) Nice!

I think a priority should be understanding the gather point system. He does seem to have the "landing pad" habit, so he knows which vils are new and he can decide where they need to be sent. The mentality around this needs to change - the gather point system is to remove all the work the player has to do to assign the vils to a task. There is a lot of manual actions involved in finding your new idle vils, figuring out which resource they should work on, finding that resource and clicking it. With 3 TCs there is a lot of wasted effort and time. The gather point system can literally do this for you - if you know that this TC will be making wood vils, you put the gather point on the trees. If you have new vils going to stone, you put the gather point on stone. It's simple on the surface, but mentality changes like this are hard and take repetition.
The straggler tree concept is also foreign to this player. The straggler trees are the "landing pad" for farmers. They are not meant to be working on those trees, they are just cutting wood since you don't have farms up yet. Farms are their primary task, so them cutting wood is just so that they're busy instead of being idle at a landing pad, but they need to be reassigned to make a new farm as soon as possible. The longer they are on straggler trees, the less time they're farming. The only difference between an idle landing pad and a straggler landing pad that while the vils are on the landing pad, they're working. That's all.

What for me as casual player really works. is having hotkeys linked to the position of the icons. for examle Q=house, A=farm etc.etc. military building=Shiftclick + same story. same going with techs. Perfect when you forget the hotkeys you can see where the hotkey can be found. 1,2,3 etc are still for grouping. For selecting the building =Cntrlkey + building hotkey

There is the pause button for new players and there is no shame in using it. They can learn much faster without overwhelming pressure.

The one thing I think was missing in the coaching was: You see the enemy had 3 archer rangers when you scout his base, what can counter this? if he had some skims mixed in his first attack he could had deal so much damage... the next thing that i saw was that he had so much stone that he sold, maybe a second defensive castle or walls could grant him more time on thinking what to do. Hard AI pop cap is like what, 75? so at his skill level had he played a notch more defensively he wins for sure, as he had by far a superior Economy.
I agree with adding in a few skirms. However, I think the goal is not just to beat an AI (turtling can beat an AI pretty easily) but rather to build the skills you would also use long term in multiplayer. AI just exists to create pressure; the real goal is improve on the fundamentals and timings.
@@jonsummers3453 agree 100%. THe other thing i dont fully understand, the guy is having a hard time with the hotkeys, the default hot keys are so intuitive for building... select inactive vills or buildings, that's the tricky part... but in terms of villager building I personally use the defaults
@@MacNewbieAoE2huh just click idle vil button ALL the time so they don't just stand there .. basic thing like waypoint just a tc is far more important than farm hot key. If got vils queuing to nowhere and idles every where unseen farm key seems trivial even though we know Hera like to use his farm hot key 100 times per game
@@jonsummers3453He gave great long term advice. He’s completely right. If you scout military buildings you got to have counter units. Just like if you see stables, you have to have a couple spearmen.

I’m surprised you didn’t tell him to repair the barracks, to keep his wall up. Not only that, but queue a couple of spearmen for defense against the knights that freely took down the barracks.

@@mars.unreal Like 1st button will always be "Q" 2nd button always will be "W"
Example: Villagers will always be "Q" when you open the Town Center, and loom the button downwards, that would be "A".
So Q will be villagers and A will be loom
Same with the archery range for example "Q" Would be the archer and "W" the skirmisher, while "A" and "S" is the upgrades

Isnt it amazing the synchronisities that i binged watched a bunch of Hera last night looking for a "How to beat the Extreme AI (in a team game)" and tgis is kinda close to it.
Me and the boys have been playing a lot of 2/3/4/5vX Hardest and Extreme AI on BF trying to figure out what civs we like and which ones work. Im one of the stronger players so ive been playing the flank position mostly but have been struggling to make Late Game Aztecs work, considering we arnt trying to rush the AI but let it build comparable army comps. It always seems that late game the enemy has great unit comp, macro, and eco, and most of the time the late game Aztec comp is countered (a lot by Chemistry Civs, bombards and hand connoners realy causing issues)
I feel like too many late game Cav civs just beat my Eagle/Skirm/Seige comp.
Any late game tips or is it just Civ diff? Ive been picking up Saracans as a BF back up civ

I guess you can make him use modern dec hot keys.

Hera any idea how to counter this 30 pop 6 archery ranges into imp from saracens on arena? it's stupidly OP in the after match report i see my opponent only collected the initial food from animals but didn't touch farms or their berries by like 15 min i had what looked like 60 archers burning my gate down in less than 10 seconds, it's ridiculous i dont know if its seen in higher elo games, also they only had one tc throughout the game and managed to get to like 75 vills (i'm assuming this is a premade build order that they have developed) player name is Zagesi if you can find a replay.
Basically they compensate for lack of villagers by only mining stone and gold and since they are on archers they can just buy what they need for all archer upgrades + castle + imp

Hello, new here. Why does he play against the HD version of the AI?
I am going some steps forward as I played this game for a long time and tried mongols vs korean as that is by far the hardest one played in blackforest. if you found a way too beat the koreans on hard ai let me know.
There are some extremely low hanging fruits in learning the game before getting a "coach" but I appreciate the video

I would suggest people against AI to auto-scout. There is no shame in using auto-scout if you are new or if the game is a little bit too fast, it is far better than keeping the scout in idle
Hiring Hera to help beat hard ai. Brother just learn a basic build order.
Sadly the game itself is terrible at teaching anything so it's incomprehensibly better to learn things from outside of it

Econ is more straightforward. All your food goes to vils/eco upgrade/aging up. Wood and gold are for units. Your damage upgrades help your castle.
Continuing to pump nothing but xbow and lose them all to skirm and then wondering why you had no army in imperial and no ability to kill a couple of castle age rams was pretty terrible advice .. some knights on defense stance near where castle was going to go up would made way more sense. Why advise to make xbow vs skirms .. with no knights ... Player suffering from the noob problem of resources and no units was painful to watch
Did they tone down the aggression of the hard AI? When I started playing DE about a year ago, I was faster than the guy you've been coaching, but when my third archer was ready, the enemy already arrived with about 5-6 skirms.
EXACTLY... I prepare light and swordsmen much faster than the guy (no offense) and send them over but at the same time the AI is raiding me with lots of archers and then i have to bring back my army and i cant never attack.
There are different AI from older versions of the game. Here below is a comment from a developer:
The "AI (CD Version)" is the standard AI from the CD version of the game (updated to use new content, a few bug fixes, playstyle unchanged). This AI is a bit slower than the others but has some unique tactics.
The "AI (HD Version)" is the standard AI from the HD version of the game (updated to use new content, playstyle unchanged). This AI is quite aggressive and can be very effective at that.
The "AI" is the standard AI in the Definitive Edition and overall the strongest of the three on the Extreme difficulty level and can play on more different settings. This AI is more well-rounded than the HD AI and strong in the lategame.

It's hard to make someone use hotkeys that has never really used them before. I feel like you need to impose a penalty if he uses them, like 5 seconds where you're not allowed to click.

I feel that. I was ~1750 ELO in AoM TDM (circa 2004) without ever using a hot key. If I had pushed myself to learn them, I would have been *very* fast.
I was just trash at typing, and my need to see the keyboard was something that held me back from squeaking into that top-tier.
As a piano teacher, muscular memory is something hard to unlearn. Is harder to correct a bad technique than to teach the correct one from zero. Hera has to force his student to use hotkeys, i know is hard to be a 'rude' teacher but sometimes it is necesary for the student to progress

Nope No he can't. Found this video very strange advice to make xbow vs skirm .. told him waypoint tc but only one .. a few kts he could have cleared the skirms easily .. then GG in early imp while he has tons resources and ai was still in castle age .. few cavaliers he could cleaned up easily the few rams from ai. I get you can't tell him a million things during the game but maybe more benefit would be watch the recording with him or maybe even pause the game during so he can be shown things going wrong with less pressure.

easiest way to get hardest ai achievement if anyone is interesting is to play gold rush go Persians and douche the ai bugs out and you get free win. This is only if you just want the achievement and don't care about getting better.
Is there a hardest AI achievement? I skipped that and went straight to extreme, did I miss out on something?
the easiest way by far is to play Great Britain and give one of the civs without cannon galleons, you castle the shoreline (player 2 starts always on the same island)
