The funniest thing is that i am stayed tunned with Ed for looooooong time, and watching his video form 4years ago - stiiil makes me feel inspired! Daaaamn man - you are legend! Huge shut out from Russia! You are the one! Just keep on climbing! No doubts we will celebrate 1m sub on your chanel soon!!!!! Peace and love.
This video is actually GREAT to revisit. I didn't understand the first time I watched but months later it almost feels like everything falls into place
I needed this cause I can't mix to save my life, but now I have enough insight to continue to try using these helpful tips. Thank you. I will be getting one of your drum kits real soon.
Hi bro I have been watching ur videos since 2 months I started a home studio and u sir have been very helpful so I want to thank you for all u did for music 🎵
Thanks Ed, you always know what your talking about & never click baiting me. Much love for helping my elevate my tunes. Without you I'd still probably be pressing one or 2 keys on my midi trying to make a hit 😋
@EdTalenti yo if digital samples and DI recorded synth are set at -18db typically, what input level would you set instrumental samples in hiphop when gain staging? (E.g. an acoustic guitar sample with natural room reverb) Thanks for your videos, Peace
Hello. Great video. One question, can we group all similar type tracks(for example high hats, or synth, or efx ) that we need to sidechain (for kick or snare) and use this comp on this group? It will save our cpu, but what about quality?
I noticed you added and decreased gain on the drums and 808 to make them - 18 to -12 etc. for the hi hats and everything else in the mix do you apply gain to them too? Or just adjust with the volume with the mixer slider?
Why you do the trim before adding fxs on your channels? Does it make a difference if you do it after? or even adjust the track faders on the mixer to - 18db?
great video man thanks so much! Beat is fire also! Obviously your hat loops are in stereo and have some hard panning... but as for the chords/melodies do you like to pan them to separate them in the stereo image? I can see they have a natural stereo effect from the VST, but do you pan them further? I have been told by some engineers to put a mono utility on my master while I level and EQ as a way to make sure that everything has its space in the mix before I start panning. what are your thoughts on this? Thanks again!
I used to do the mono thing but I never really liked it personally. I do hear a lot of people talking about that though so I'm sure there's some truth in there! I do pan my chords and melodies, in fact, I tend to keep them moving throughout the beat with a slow autopan or automation. Makes it sound less repetitive ✌️ Thanks for checking out the video man and let me know if you wanted to ask any other questions!
That's cool your using Gain Staging techniques when you mix. A lot of people don't know about it and never knew why their mixes are muddy. I usually go 20db to 18db myself. And you get clean mixes all day.
Could u give an explanation how u use the gain plugin in the end to bring the mix back up to -6 dB? Do you use those on every single track or do u turn up the gain on the master channel im a little bit confused! Hope you can help me out! thx in advance!
when you add vocals you probably turn mid-high down a little bit i think. Is that ableton push btw ? i saw you made hihats on that in several videos and it seems so easy to switch hitting mode.
Im watching it on 2022. Found this channel months ago. And by this far, your explanation is the most understandable, alongside with Michael from In the Mix channel. Shout out from Indonesia!
Really good video man! I just had a question, your mix was peaking at -12db after all your leveling and just from eq'ing your master (boosting highs & your kick) is that what ended up bringing your mix to -6? or did you use the utility to bring your mix up to -6? Looked like the video skipped ahead there so i wasn't sure how you got to -6db afterwards! Your final mix in the outro of the video was super loud too (in a good way) did you just crank it into a limiter? I would really like to see your process of getting your beats loud after youve reached the -6db. Thanks for the quality videos!
Usually my mix ends up around -12 and I bring it up to -6db before exporting it for mastering. The one you heard in the outro is the mastered version which is at 0db! Hope this helps!
EdTalenti oh okay so even after you eq’d your master boosting your kicks frequency & high end you were still sitting at -12? Would be really helpful to see a mastering tutorial for your beats too! I use ableton and i struggle to find a good tutorial for getting my beats as loud as possible. I mix to -6 then use ozone 8 for my limiting to make my mix nice & loud but i still find my tracks aren’t as loud as others i hear on TH-cam. Thanks for getting back to me! Sorry for the long comments lol
@@mattremblay_ yeah! Depending on the beat it might be a bit more like -10 or even -8 but that's the range. Also, that's pretty much exactly what I do with my mix/master. Just make sure you get that RMS below 10 for your master!
I love Span I've been using it forever but if I may : You should calibrate it a bit better so as to see your frequency spectrum more precisely. Also try to tune your kick in regard to the key of your track so the 808 & Kick don't collide.
What's the best way to go about calibrating Span? Also, I do tune kicks and 808s. I tend to do the kick either on the root note or a 5th above. Thanks for the comment I really appreciate the feedback man!
@@EdTalenti Sure bro, I'll make a quick video tutorial about calibrating Span. As for tuning the Kick the root can work if it's the octave above but if you want to put a pitch bend effect on your 808's you might still clash with the kick. The 5th can work better but it may be too high sometimes so for that reason you can also use the 3rd (Minor or Major depending of your beat) I think that's generally the best option. Let's keep in touch.
Great tutorial👍🏻 though I have one question: Why you reduced the gain of the kick with the utility and not with the regular gain At abelton? (like you did with the hh and the leads)
Utility reduces the input gain INTO the mixer. What you're seeing on the hh and synths are just the levels on the Ableton mixer, not the input levels. Those can only be changed with a gain plugin ✌️
I’m using the span analyzer but my metering on the plugin doesn’t move when I’m decreasing the gain with the utility plugin. Any idea what would be preventing that? do you have a certain setting on the span plugin to monitor the metering?
That's definitely an option but I like to do the tracks individually, considering trap beats usually only have a handful of tracks anyway. If it was a bigger project I'd definitely wanna work with groups!
Man i have some questions. I use soft clipper and then put the gain up that way drums hit hard is that wrong ? And i leave my mix usually at -6db then put vocals on it?
They're gonna end up being around -12 to -6 all together. At that point you can apply your mixing chain (compression, EQ, whatever you like) and bring the mix to -6db, ready to be exported for mastering.
15:35 "I'm going to open up this gain plugin like before and this time I'm going to turn up the gain to -6db" Where is the gain plugin that you are turning up???? The master track?
I m talking about master track where at 15:35 he increasing volume for master track. So he backed ALL tracks BUT in master track to -6db. Hope I explained my thoughts clearly. English is not my native.)) "I'm going to open up this gain plugin like before and this time I'm going to turn up the gain to -6db"

dont forget the dynamics effect in ozone. multiband compression or simple compression is really important in mixing your track
The moment when Ed's unmixed beat sounds cleaner that my 'mixed' one haha

What Trevor said is most likely what it is! Let us know if it worked!

Hey I wanted to ask, do you hi pass at 20Hz for the 808 like you do for the kick?
Yessir. Most of the time at least 👍
