Faith is Not Something You Can Lose

  • Sure, there are times when it's just hard to believe what the Catholic Faith tells us, but when someone says "I'm losing my faith," or "I lost my faith," there's something much more serious going on there. Fr. Mike examines this problem, but emphasizes that we actually can't lose faith because it's a gift from God. We can use that gift wrongly and put it into what Fr. Mike calls "God's chief rivals" or, in other words, idols; but the faith is still there and we can still put it in God if we simply choose to. Maybe God is giving you the gift of faith right now, and maybe you just have to use it the way he intends.

    This video series is helping me to pick my life back up and give it to the One who created me. I've been paralyzed by hopelessness, doubt and fear coupled with apathy, cynicism, guilt and shame and have found myself away from a church that is so beautiful and warm but I am so apprehensive when it comes to being with others. Please pray for me that I can shed this spirit of doubt and prejudice so I can live fully in the Spirit of the Lord

      When you say you’re apprehensive when it comes to being with others, do you mean other Catholics? As in you fear judgment from them? I went through that for a long time, and it held me back for a while before I ultimately came back. While it’s true that you will probably encounter judgmental Catholics everywhere you go, it won’t be as many as you think. I was pleased to find that the people at my parish of now 4 years are anything but. They acknowledge their own sin, whatever it may be, foremost and merely forgive the sin of others and acknowledge the length their brothers and sisters have come in following The Lord. I would highly encourage you to do an Alpha session somewhere if it’s offered anywhere in your area. That was probably the best think I could have done in the first year after my return to the Church.

    There was never an excuse to miss Vigil or Sunday Mass in my house growing up. My mom would get the good old Clarion Herald and have the Mass times for every church in the New Orleans area on the fridge. When my sister and I were working and going to high school she’d ask us at the beginning of the weekend. ‘When are you going to Mass?’ There was zero chance a Mass wasn’t available somewhere. I never lost the habit even thought there have been good times and bad with my faith, I always go to Mass. Thanks Mom!

    I realized whatever faith I had it was not enough. I notice how I have stagnated, most especially, with my health. I went back to church last week for the Saturday evening mass. Sometimes I did go to the Sunday services. Several years ago, when my plane arrived in Houston, I decided to visit Joel Osteen's church. I had just about enough time to get there for the 7pm service. My trip was focused on visiting death row inmates. Saturday night, though, I was free. I had not even noticed that it was Easter weekend when I made my travel plans. I surprised myself. And I made Pastor Osteen very happy. They had planned a beautiful service. So, yeah. I was in church on Easter weekend. I went back to Lakewood Church the following day for the Sunday service. I have been substituting watching Joel Osteen's services instead of going to church. Last week, I decided I needed both. I need to seek God. I need to look for him. I am in poor health. I have to give more time to my faith. I came to understand this because I allowed myself to go without church services. Please dont make everything a sin. We learn. We either grow in faith or we falter. I see mysrlf growing in faith. I will admit I was impressed by your words of encouragement not to leave. Thank you for that.

    My parents and I aren’t very religious. But lately, I’ve been feeling the need to speak to God and ask for forgiveness for my sins. It’s been a long time since I’ve attended church or even picked up a bible. This week, I’m planning on going to church this Sunday, with my entire family. I haven’t been baptized because my mother wanted me to choose for myself, but I really want to now. Despite there being so many moments when I really did question God’s plan, I’ve finally realized that even doing the minimum to uphold my relationship with the Lord is enough. Thank you, Father Mike, for passing on and serving as this gift from God. My restoration in faith begins now.

    I was born and raised Catholic but few years ago I noticed that I was being so detached from my so called faith. I missed all the Sunday mass, believe only to myself and my own understanding till one day not for so long now I got anxiety and depression. I started hating everybody my parents, siblings, friends most of the people who loves me. I feel so lost and worthless and even asked myself if God is real. One day I spoke to mum and told her my struggles and she asked find the lord in my heart and I said I don’t believe in God anymore that was the most devastating days of my life, that I almost think of hurting myself and that scares me to death so, I decided to pray. I prayed so much so so much I was crying while I was talking to HIM my heart was screaming in pain and suddenly I felt the Holy Spirit embraces me, I calm down and fell asleep. The next morning I prayed the rosary and asked for forgiveness watched videos on TH-cam about Catholic faith and found myself watching Fr. Mike videos. It helps me a lot to understand more about my faith and drove me back to the Lord. God is good and merciful. I’m currently working in Saudi Arabia no Catholic Churches in here one thing I promised to myself when I get home i will do my confession and receive God’s grace and mercy. Thank you Father Mike for being God’s instrument to reach out lost souls like me. God is real. God bless you

    Father Mike is SO right! People today call themselves Catholic, but then they just become too lazy to go to church. Little by little their beliefs become brainwashed by the temporal world. Before you know it, they forfeit their faith and they start talking against the Church and attack you for defending it. It's not like riding a bike. With faith, if you don't use it, and nourish it, you lose it. Unfortunately I've seen it happen to too many of my uncles, aunts and cousins, to all six of my living siblings (except the one who died at age 13), and what hurts the most, it happened to one of my three children, who disowned us completely, 11 years ago.

    • @markpeter1968

      Daniel, check your priveledge at the door. Too lazy? How about underfed? How about priests going about only with challenges to up your virtous game. Is the world not competative enough? How are people supposed to find comfort in the church when you called them Lazy. Grow up

    • @nenabunena
      @nenabunena 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree as well, I grew up and went to Catholic school for 20 years (nursery-College) and even went to Catholic retreats every year starting in highschool up to College for 3 days-1 week. But due to non-participation, I became apathetic though I still defended Catholicism because I was into history and knew it was an ancient religion compared to Protestantism. And being imbibed in the culture of indifference does affect you, and we like to blame our parents and environment, but in the end we must also take responsibility for it

      You are so right, I saw someone yesterday, because my mother is an Uber driver, but because she's disabled, has to have someone ride with her, and she picked some people up from the movie theatre, that saw the film The Nun. One of the them, was Catholic, and he said that he "wasn't going to church for a while" I told him, that if I watched the movie, I would write down every single theological flaw. What kind of attitude is that, that we get scared to go to church because of films? I'm not saying he should have seen it or shouldn't have seen it I'm saying what is the point of that? He, as a Catholic has an obligation to go to Mass. If he's physically capable of going to the cinema, he can go to church.

    • @Jesuslily
      @Jesuslily 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The failure here is to expect people to accomplish on a set of rules, rituals and behaviours without them ever having been evangelised. People who are not evangelised should not be forced to sit in church.. its like a language they don't understand and they will only come to think of religion as complusion. Teaching about sacraments and apologetics and history etc. wont save anybody. Priests need to understand that in our time and age people need to be evangelised from the pulpits. They dont come to the church evangelised. They need to learn the basic Gospel, what the Bible teaches, what Jesus did and why (and not just say "because he loved us) , covenant and all that.. then when you have people evanglised, only then, will sacraments etc make sense through faith, because the Holy Spirit is teaching us from the inside too.

      I've been feeling like that too recently. When you try to search for who God is, you end up with a lot of questions. Maybe that is what it feels like to start learning how much you don't know about someone. You become aware of how much you lack the knowledge of who that person really is. It can also be the first step to figuring Him out, which will be a challenge in itself. I guess I think faith is like a bicycle. You would never think that a machine with two narrow wheels would be able to transport you, but then it does. We may struggle to think that God is present or real, but he's still carrying you, and bringing you to the correct place despite our hesitations and doubts. 💛

    I was worried, I thought that I could actually lose faith. After my dad died in 2020 when I was 14, I didn't have someone to actually help me pray. With all that has happened and is happening, I thought that I wouldn't have a chance to be redeemed. But I have been praying consistently for the past 7 months. I have started to want to give up things because of what the Bible says and I am forever grateful and I ask God to keep leading me as he transforms me. Amen! Bless all of you and I pray that God gives us guidance!

    Thank you so much father, i used to be a very strong catholic and I experienced God's Healing Mercy on my soul and in consequence, blessings in my life, but suddenly, because of my stupid way of being I commited a sin thinking: that there was not going to be a problem because I was going to confession after commiting it, and after that sin, I entered in a period of dryness and in a fight of 6 months vs the enemy (i went with the exorcist of my diocese) and the situation got worse because the exorcist died in that period (he was older) and i felt hopeless and started to thinking that anything wouldn´t had happened if I had never met my religion (i thought this because I let the others's opinions affected me) and then i went to a christian cult and they "prayed for me" and what i used to felt (the demonic oppresion) just disapeared. So I trew away everything that was catholic in my house and started to live a secular life that lasted 2 months thinking that "it were going to be a better solution while the situation get colder" and then i could return to the church, but in that period i commited sin after sin and my situation got much more worse than it was. What can I do Father? I am convinced that I need to return to church as soon as possible, i have gone to confession and i am starting to pray the rosary. Another thing that i did not mentioned was that I was afraid to be called to priesthood or religious life ( i actually felt the calling and that was another thing for that i escape from God) but I know that I can do nothing good without God and He is very important for me so I am prepared to say yes to whatever my vocation be. Finally I apologize for my english, i am from México. Please whoever that see this comentary Pray for me :(
