there is so much more than the center of Berlin. I am a born Berliner living in in California since 1962 due to a marriage of a wonderful man from the USA. Every show shows only the Landmarks, but go and visit the outer districts and subburbs (Vororte) , Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg, Grunewald and so many more to get a new a new view of this great city. I miss it every day, the great culture, food and its people, I am to old now being a handicapped widower to go back and visit the city of my birth, missing curry wurst and Schwarzbrot (ryebread), so I visit in my dreams.

Small correction: only one of the two politicians ‘kissing’ on the EastSide Gallery was East German - Erich Honecker, the leader of the GDR. The other politician was ‘Big Brother’ Leonid Brezhnev, the long serving Soviet leader … and the ‘Kiss’ was based on an actual kiss between them both - with the sense of ‘please spare is from this deadly embrace’

I tend to come back to TH-cam to find videos of cities in Europe I have been. There are a lot of videos out there, but none that come close to yours. The level of history that you give with the respect to the city you are visiting, is very refreshing and I am truly appreciative of what you do. You went to all the places I wanted to see again except for the victory column in the middle of Tiergarten. Thank you so much for bringing back great memories, and doing it with such class.

Thank you so much for this video. You really did a nice job of portraying the city and the history behind it. We plan to visit Berlin in 2024. My sister and I went to the Berlin wall in the 70's. We were collage age and we were afraid to go Inside Berlin. The wall was guarded and I remember not being able to hear any noises on the other side. ... no dogs barking or horns honking.... Nothing of life on the other side...it really was very eerie and very emotional. i will never forget it. I'm so glad to see that they do have the bricks lined on the ground to remember this wall, to get the feeling of how the city was so divided. And as you said, how families and friends were separated from each other for over 30 years.

    • @MaxandSidney

I do recommend a visit to the Berlin Wall memorial at Bernauer strasse and to book a guided tour with Berliner Unterwelten especially their tour of one of the escape tunnels at Brunnenstrasse. Highly recommended. Both checkpoint Charlie and East Site Gallery are kind of fake. Bernauer Strasse gives you a really good overview of the system that was the border wall.

I've always avoided Berlin, but I think you two have done a very nice, informative and stress-free vlog. Since I was raised in the Cold War, and actually taught in two communist countries as an exchange professor, I'd be especially interested in Checkpoint Charlie and the East Berlin historical museum. I'd also like strolling through the Tiergarden and seeing the animals from atop the dome, but I don't think I could now manage those steps. Oh well. These days I don't live too far from the German border, and for my husband and me I think it would be a fun drive to a less populated city nearby where we could leave the car and take public transport into Berlin to check out these hot spots. Cheers

Thanks so much for watching!! Berlin is definitely a rapidly changing city. It has an extremely difficult past, but the present and future feel exciting and new! Taking public transport into the city would definitely be a great way to go, the city is extremely well-connected. So glad you enjoyed the video 😃

The Berlin television tower was not built by the Soviets. It was built by the GDR.
It was planned by East German architects (Günter Franke, Fritz Dieter, Gerhard Kosel) and built by East German workers.

The kiss: It is not two German men. It is General Secretary of the Soviet union Leonid Bresjnev and the East German leader Erich Honecker, October 07, 1979. It is called a "bruderkuss" (Brother kiss).

A nice and informative video, but the TV tower was not built by the Soviets. It was built by the GDR and the GDR was not a Soviet state. Unfortunately, you often mix up socialism, communism and the Soviets. These terms are not interchangeable and have different meanings.

overall good -- but contains some factual errors -- the Fernsehturm was built by the GDR, not "the Soviets" -- the person who kisses GDR party and state leader Erich Honecker is not "another East German politician" but Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev. Also: the division into a sinister and totalitarian East vs. a free and self-directed West is a little too sweeping and simplistic. "Belgrade" and former Yugoslavia were never part of the Eastern Bloc and had a economic and political system quite different from the one in the Soviet-dominated realm. Details matter. Finally, the GDR's Stalinist and post-Stalinist model of state "socialism" should be more clearly distinguished from other forms of socialism, such as democratic socialism, socialism from below, and critical Marxism as an analytical tool. The DDR-Museum is too sensationalized and does only provide a very superficial take on actual life in the GDR. One learns much more by reading Katja Hoyer's recent book "Beyond the Wall."

Why is it, that you travel to Ber-LIN, to see the BER-lin wall? Would somone make up their mind as to how to pronounce the city?
The proper way would be Ber-LIN - so where's that BER-lin atrocity coming from???

Sorry, but this was a very uninspiring video. Some small facts were wrong, but worse is that you were suggesting all the crappy tourist sites. You did not visit any interesting neighborhoods, and learned nothing about the people who live in Berlin. I would suggest you take an alternative tour the next time you are in Berlin. You can see the authentic Berlin, and not where to get currywurst at Checkpoint Charlie.

This isn't a comprehensive "let me tell you all about the whole of Berlin" video. That would take an entire series of videos. For perhaps first time visitors, it is very good. If one had been to Berlin before and had been to these sites, then a person would search for youtube videos with that criteria.
