This show was my WORLD back in the day. It was a show very much FOR us kids, as opposed to "adult-approved humor". It didn't talk down to us. It very much felt like a show that was on our side, pulling no punches. An exceptionally rare thing, and incredibly beloved for it. And how incredible were Les Lye and Abby Hagyard?! Love 'em.

As a Canadian Gen-X kid who only had UHFfor the majority of his seminal years, this show was special to me. Also, my crush on Christine McGlade is still there, even when we were in a Starbucks together about ten years ago.
I have a friend from Germany who is a dead ringer for Alistair, his name's Klaus. He's involved in comic books and did a IDW one shot for the character Wheelie. Could be Kup, actually, but it's very good.

Just an FYI. I lived in Ottawa, where the Canadian version was filmed and Alanis Morisette was in fact on the show. She was on in 1986, then left to pursue singing. She went to my high school. She is in fact THE ALANIS MORISETTE!
Isn't the version filmed at CJOH the only version filmed? Didn't Nick just use those versions but swapped out some of the local Ottawa stuff for something more generic?
It's worth mentioning that this was one of the few kids' shows starring kids, made in that era, that showed the kids bickering, arguing, and insulting each other on a regular basis instead of being good little Mousketeers all the time. The insults were often crude, but they were certainly a reflection of what real kids have always said and done to each other, and continue to do up to the present day.
I remember watching this on Nickelodeon back in the 80s on Saturday afternoons. I was a kid with an odd sense of humor so this was totally up my alley, but as I described the show to my wife the other day she just kinda... made a weird face lol... Maybe you just had to be there :) "D'aahhhhhhhhhh-I heard that!"
BEST thing to ever come out of Nickelodeon. I miss this show and the feelings that I had watching it for the first time. Moose was my first crush, 100%.
My earliest memories of Nickelodeon were of You Can't Do That on Television. I can remember when we finally got the expanded basic cable when I was a kid, and I found Nickelodeon by accident. A whole TV channel for kids you say!? YCDTOT was the perfect sketch comedy show for kids of my generation. It took equal parts of Rowan & Martin's Laugh In, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and all the gross out humor a kid could want.
I used to watch it over here in the UK on "The Children's Channel" (not sure if Nickeledeon existed here at the time) but it was one of thise shows that aired pretty late for a kids network to the point couldn't remember if it actually existed or it was a weird fever dream :D
Kind of how I felt about Round the Twist. Nobody I knew could remember that show, then I found it again online a few years back. I am not quite convinced it isn't still a fever dream.
That's what's both great and terrible about the internet: finding out that everything you remember from the 1980s that you thought you might have misremembered or just imagined was one hundred percent real.
I watched a really good documentary about this show maybe a month or two ago and now I see you guys have one too! That's great because this show was a classic even when it was still airing. I rememebr those early days of cable. Nick was only on 12 hours a day and then it turned into A&E for the next 12 hours. This show, Danger Mouse, Sebastion and Belle, Pinwheel, The Little Prince, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Nick Rocks!, and Mr. Wizard's World were all bangers and are etched into my psyche all these decades later. Shout out to Turkey TV (and Mad Movies) too!

Yes! “You Can’t Do that on Television” was definitely one of the many non-animated shows I looked forward to watching as a kid, right next to Pinwheel, Mr Wizard and Double Dare. I was always sad that I could never participate in Nickelodeon’s annual Toys R’ Us sweepstakes where you’d get to run through the isles grabbing as many toys as you possibly could within a set time limit. The limit was the sky, and I felt that. Great Stuff! As always!
An important detail that wasn’t mentioned is that the kids wrote a lot of the jokes, and a reason why it was funny to kids. The kids were from the local schools and were expected to maintain a straight A average, and filming was only on the weekends to not interrupt with education. I had forgotten about You Can’t Do That In Comics, it was actually just as good, if only a single page script in a digest sized TV guide. I always looked forward to them during the publishing.
Growing up in Canada, I loved that show. I was surprised that the US even had it, as we didn't have Nickelodeon at the time. It's cool that the show gained an international audience, and that it virtually birthed an entire network in Nickelodeon, whose headquarters ironically is located half a block away from my apartment in Burbank.

Who would have thought that a small child from Western Canada who was a fan of a show that was produced thousands of miles away would later in life be located less than 100 yards away from their office that cuts me paychecks. It actually was "THE" Alanis Morissette. That show was shot in my hometown. Which is also where Alanis is from. When she launched her music career with "Too Hot", they made a big thing about it.
The earliest shows on Nickelodeon that I remember watching are "Out of Control" and "You Can't Do that on Television". I was so young that I always thought they were the same show until I realized that "Cut. That. Out." wasn't part of "the slime show".
I'm Canadian, and even I have heard of the antics of the leadership in Florida, their completely criminal mismanagement of covid precautions and now, their anti LGBTQ legislation.
@@samurphy I've lived in Florida my whole life. We made it through COVID much better than other states and there is no anti LGBTQ legislation. We have a law that prevents teachers from talking to third graders about things like transgenderism without their parent's knowledge. Third graders. Do you really want a teacher talking to your seven year old child about transgender surgery without your knowledge? Our Governor looks out for us as Floridians and kept our economy strong during Covid. No one ever said you could not wear a mask, only that the government may not require it of you. When other states labeled their police as villains Governor Desantis gave ours a bonus. Our housing market is booming with folks moving to our State. The media has tried to smear our Governor but it's just not true.
What's that all about, you ask? Unnecessary injection of current politics into a retrospective piece about an entertainment show from the 80's. This is Dan's show, and he's of course free to do with it as he chooses. I'll staunchly defend that. But, as someone who finds good and bad things in both parties, and in DeSantis, it just took me right out of the moment. Suddenly I was asking myself things like: To the extent that I agree with DeSantis' policies, would the writer and host of the show I'm watching consider me to be sentient slime? Could we disagree and yet be cordial and respectful, or would he despise me because of differences in political philosophy? For me, when I'm watching content about entertainment properties, perhaps particularly ones from my childhood, I don't want to be forced to think about such things via low-hanging-fruit, out-of-nowhere, not-relevant-to-the-topic-at-hand, zingers.
My parents split when was 2 years old, and thankfully my mother eventually got cable at her place when I turned 5 years old in 86, and eventually my own 13in TV in my bedroom so I binged a lot of cable TV growing up when I was at her place being able to watch just about anything short of adult content. My dad just could not get cable ran to his house no matter what as he was outside of the town limits, and the local cable company refused to run it, plus a big C-Band sat dish was just way too expensive, and so when I was at his place, it was rabbit ears only till 95 when he got his first DirecTV setup, and it was a self install deal taking us a weekend to install having to cut down a few pine trees in the backyard for line of sight, and the wait for the concreted pole for the dish to dry, even after all of that it only allowed for viewing on a single TV, so I was stuck watching what him, or my stepmom wanted to watch if they were home, and using the living room TV. My grandparents did not get cable because of cost till the early 2000's, so when I stayed at their place it was rabbit ears only as well, but at least we could pick up WTBS from Atlanta with the powered roof antenna with a rotator for WCW Saturday Night Wrestling, and some old school cartoons, so I kind of felt your pain growing up as well to some degrees.
We were dirt poor begged my Mom for cable just for YCDTOTV on Nick and MTV of course. Got it for a whole summer in 3rd grade it was one of the best summers ever!
We lived in the middle of nowhere. We didn't get cable at our house until I was 15. I missed a lot. I begged for a satellite dish, but that was back when dishes were about as big as a car.
A Mexican firing squad at that. These days all the stupid people who get upset over everything would be protesting in the streets, or crying on social media about it being racist, and the show not having a diverse, and represented cast. 🤦♂️
Yeah but watching that as a kid wasn't traumatizing. the fact that there was no blood or any real violence involved with the skit...it was a joke. So Why as a parent would that be a problem for your kid to watch in the 1980s if it's just a joke? society is extremely soft nowadays
Growing up in Ottawa made this show all the more special. Like many here, I had a huge crush on Moose. Angie the talking doll was working as a waitress at the Egin Street Diner in the 90s and I couldn't resist saying "Hey, you're Angie the talking doll". She blushed a little. Too much fun.
So cool you mentioned that this show was popular in Saudi Arabia! My parents worked for the oil company there in the 80's, and the only television station in English was run by the same oil company for its expat employees (channel 3). The selection of shows was limited, and often heavily censored, but the children's programming was great. Knight Rider, Automan, Airwolf, You Can't Do That On Television...these were all must-see-tv back then. Thanks for the walk down memory lane...love this channel!
I grew up in Saudi Arabia throughout the 90s and You Can't Do That on Television was definitely one of the highlights of local television for the first few years. Unfortunately, despite constantly rotating the same programming year in and out, it was at some point pulled from rotation, despite its immense popularity and was never seen again, which is a damn shame. We tried to replicate the slime formula (water, flour, and food colouring according to one episode), but it never quite turned out the same for us. Also, totally had the biggest crush on moose as a budding 8 to 10 year old.
Greg and Dan, you make me sad. Bill Burr has jokes about going to a football game and everyone having to wear pink to "stand up to cancer". He goes to the game to forget about that stuff. He's hyper aware about the reality around him. He needs a break. He needs some fun. He needs some joy. Cancer is outside, but the game is here to help him recouperate so he can go back out into the world. This channel is about recouperating and joy - being reminded of the joy of a great toy or tv show and all the positive memories tied in with it. Your passion makes me feel uplifted and makes me feel connected. Do we really need to throw political pot shots at people? I'm VERY aware of the politics around me. But I need to recouperate so I can think clearly and feel some joy in a world that feels like it wants to kick me when I'm down. I don't want politics...from ANY side...thrown into that. You do you. If you guys need to say what you say, more power to you. It's your channel. But if you are in this to share your joy, it's hard to get on board when you are seething anger.
I grew up on this. Thank you, TG, for diving into this show and highlighting its influence on an entire network and an unfathomable number of toys, games and shows. I think about this show nearly everyday and an overjoyed that it can be found on streaming.
I grew up in Canada watching from Edmonton, on YTV. This show is the best kind of nostalgia and remains iconic in my mind. My favourite skit for the show was "The Boogeyman". It's a classic scenario; with a little kid, in bed, huddling under his covers in fear. The closet door bangs open to reveal a man disco dancing...classic stuff.
This was my favorite show from the very first viewing. The one funny thing I've noticed over the years is how few people noticed that the mother in Dexter's Laboratory was inspired by the housewife in the You Can't Do That on Television skits.
Watched this all the time when I was a kid. Glad to see it finally getting some attention. I never see it mentioned on the 80’s nostalgia shows but it definitely deserves to be there.

Yeah, those claiming all the Trump hate is just political didn't grow up on the east coast. That piece of human garbage would get marched out on the nightly news every few years for his latest scam or other shamelessly shady or illegal thing he had been caught doing. Trump and the Teflon Don, Jon Ghotti were the two pieces of trash that I remember seeing on the news all through my childhood back in the 80s who always seem to somehow slip the long arm of the law. Edit, my bad. I had just assumed the "Sentient Slime" being spoken of was Trump without having watched the video all the way through. It was in fact a different political turd he was talking about, a far less harmful one.
I LOVED you can’t do that on television and Moose and Lisa were my first TV crushes. The first show I ever saw on Nickelodeon though was Pinwheel. I thought Plus and Minus were like a dollar store version of Bert and Ernie 😂

Best show ever when I was a kid. I used to watch it on the giant satellite dish back in the 80’s!!! Lots of memories. Nickelodeon was really underrated back then. I also remember DYING to get on Double Dare too. And if you ever got on ANY of those shows, you NEVER wanted to say “I don’t know”. You would immediately be slimed!!
I love "You Can't Do That On Television." My favorite episode were when the Soviet Union tried to infiltrate the broadcast. Barf's Cafe, the Locker Room, and the Dungeon were cool.
I remember around '90 when my family moved into town, as opposed to being outside of town, we suddenly had cable. For me, that meant Nickelodeon. For my big brothers, it meant MTV. I fondly recall watching this show, along with other shows like Hey Dude, and Welcome Freshman.
When I was a kid I went to nickelodeon in Orlando and got to see someone get slimed.... They got a little paddling pool and the dude stood in it wearing a huge plastic poncho while they got about a mugs worth of slime and emptied it on his head. It was so lame I think that's the day my childhood died

I watched this religiously as a kid and also remember Turkey TV. I was thrilled that the last time John Mulaney was on SNL, they actually let him do a You Can't Do That on Television skit.
I have met Abby Hagyard on several occasions at Cons here in Ottawa. She's always a returning guest at Fanaticcon. She's quite popular at the conventions.
I remember growing up on this show, watching it on CJOH whenever it was airing. Was such a classic for Canadian children's entertainment, more mature than some other 'for kids' shows, especially ones that air today. In a fun twist of fate, I keep seeing Abby Hagyard at the various conventions that I attend with my Ghostbusters group, she even has the Lockers from the show, as well as her "Mom Abby" outfit! One side note: Another great children's/early teen tv series from Canada you should check out is: Street Cents. A informative news-type show teaching kids the basics of business, finances and what new products are out there. (Aired on CBC from 1989-2006) I always remember it for their "Fit for the Pit" segments!
This show had the balls to kill off kids in their skits. I remember one when the terrible cook character was killing off kids with his terrible cooking. Good times.
What I like is that it reminded me of how me and my friends/sibling would play back in the 80s. The jokes and subject matter were often relatable to me when I watched this regularly in 1986.
Kids in the 80's understood concepts of communication that are lost on kids today. Hell, some GROWNUPS don't understand them. Nuance, timing, context, intent, euphemism, sarcasm, irony.....IRONY!!! The woman who single handedly caused most of the western world to misunderstand the concept of irony was once on a show that used irony in many bits!! (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻
First show I watched was that weird one where all the mannequins came to life after the store closed. Honestly You Can't Do That On Television was just odd for me, but by the time I was old enough to actually watch it, it was almost 10 years old. Still neat to go back and see how mature a show was for the time and still keep it kid friendly.
I own a documentary about this show on DVD, I wish there was more footage of this online i would really like to go back check out a few episodes for old times sake
What frustrating is the producer still has *every episode* sitting at his home in France. Every. Single. One! …and we can get a high-quality DVD release. The deeply shamed things I’d personally be willing to do just to make that happen, Lemme tell you, you have no idea! 😅🤦🏽♂️
I loved that show so much as a kid that I wanted to be a cast member. I wrote a letter to Nickelodeon headquarters to ask how I could audition. They wrote me back saying I had to live in Canada and sent a kite and stickers with the silver ball branding they had at the time. I was disappointed but also happy that they responded.

I loved this show when I was a kid. I think one of the most fun times I had with TV as a kid is the episode where they put red and green boxes at the bottom of the screen. You were supposed to "vote" on what happened next. I think we all understood it was a recorded show, and the voting wasn't real, but we still gathered around the TV to hit those buttons on the screen.

I have every show on my hard drive, converted from VHS done in the 80s all with ads. It's great to watch the show in its original version compared to the streaming version

When they shut down my channel I had over 3 million subs and a lot of retro kid's tv shows and cartoons that were never released on DVD at that time. I still have most of my VHS tapes from the 80s and around 200 four hour tapes of Saturday morning cartoons i either recorded my self or traded copies of tapes for lol
I remember how she was treated by the Canadian press when her first video came out for her first album, (the one with Matt Leblanc in it). She was the “As seen on You Can’t Do That on Television” girl. But by the time Jagged Little Pill arrived, they had switched it to calling her the “You Can’t Do That in a Movie Theatre” girl.
Crazy to think a gag on a syndicated show basically became the identity for Nickelodeon for mine and a lot of other people's childhood I'm sure. I think a little part of me always hoped to get slimed anytime I say "I don't know" even today.
I miss the simpler times of the 80's when a kid's show could put the children in front of a firing squad as a comedy sketch. I still randomly say Hey Alistair when I open doors.

A small bit of advice for what it's worth. Your audience loves the show for nostalgia and it's a perfect escape from politics. I'm not unsubbing over the comment, but others have and will. It might be helpful to be mindful of this for future content.

As a Canadian kid growing up in the 80s, You Can't Do That on Television was a staple of my childhood. Green Slime, truly one of Canada's greatest gifts to the world.
The term THE (said with emphasis) is often meant to refer to someone being established or famous, but yah it didnt really come across that way as it was said too fast.
The first show I remember seeing on Nickelodeon was "Pinwheel" which is as bizarre as I remember it. It's one of those things that, to me, is best left in memory.
Great and fond memories of watching You cant do that on television. Another show Nickelodeon aired back in the day, was called Pinwheel. A show for the youngsters with puppets, I cannot remember everything about it, but it had a catchy theme song.

I rememebr those early days of cable. Nick was only on 12 hours a day and then it turned into A&E for the next 12 hours.
This show, Danger Mouse, Sebastion and Belle, Pinwheel, The Little Prince, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Nick Rocks!, and Mr. Wizard's World were all bangers and are etched into my psyche all these decades later.

Yes! “You Can’t Do that on Television” was definitely one of the many non-animated shows I looked forward to watching as a kid, right next to Pinwheel, Mr Wizard and Double Dare. I was always sad that I could never participate in Nickelodeon’s annual Toys R’ Us sweepstakes where you’d get to run through the isles grabbing as many toys as you possibly could within a set time limit.
The limit was the sky, and I felt that.

An important detail that wasn’t mentioned is that the kids wrote a lot of the jokes, and a reason why it was funny to kids. The kids were from the local schools and were expected to maintain a straight A average, and filming was only on the weekends to not interrupt with education.
I had forgotten about You Can’t Do That In Comics, it was actually just as good, if only a single page script in a digest sized TV guide. I always looked forward to them during the publishing.
Growing up in Canada, I loved that show. I was surprised that the US even had it, as we didn't have Nickelodeon at the time. It's cool that the show gained an international audience, and that it virtually birthed an entire network in Nickelodeon, whose headquarters ironically is located half a block away from my apartment in Burbank.

Who would have thought that a small child from Western Canada who was a fan of a show that was produced thousands of miles away would later in life be located less than 100 yards away from their office that cuts me paychecks. The opening of this show always reminded me of Monty Python's flying circus. Glad that was mentioned in this breakdown. Loved this show as a kid!

It actually was "THE" Alanis Morissette. That show was shot in my hometown. Which is also where Alanis is from. When she launched her music career with "Too Hot", they made a big thing about it.

The earliest shows on Nickelodeon that I remember watching are "Out of Control" and "You Can't Do that on Television". I was so young that I always thought they were the same show until I realized that "Cut. That. Out." wasn't part of "the slime show".

I'm Canadian, and even I have heard of the antics of the leadership in Florida, their completely criminal mismanagement of covid precautions and now, their anti LGBTQ legislation.
@@samurphy I've lived in Florida my whole life. We made it through COVID much better than other states and there is no anti LGBTQ legislation. We have a law that prevents teachers from talking to third graders about things like transgenderism without their parent's knowledge. Third graders. Do you really want a teacher talking to your seven year old child about transgender surgery without your knowledge? Our Governor looks out for us as Floridians and kept our economy strong during Covid. No one ever said you could not wear a mask, only that the government may not require it of you. When other states labeled their police as villains Governor Desantis gave ours a bonus. Our housing market is booming with folks moving to our State. The media has tried to smear our Governor but it's just not true.
What's that all about, you ask? Unnecessary injection of current politics into a retrospective piece about an entertainment show from the 80's.
This is Dan's show, and he's of course free to do with it as he chooses. I'll staunchly defend that.
But, as someone who finds good and bad things in both parties, and in DeSantis, it just took me right out of the moment. Suddenly I was asking myself things like: To the extent that I agree with DeSantis' policies, would the writer and host of the show I'm watching consider me to be sentient slime? Could we disagree and yet be cordial and respectful, or would he despise me because of differences in political philosophy? For me, when I'm watching content about entertainment properties, perhaps particularly ones from my childhood, I don't want to be forced to think about such things via low-hanging-fruit, out-of-nowhere, not-relevant-to-the-topic-at-hand, zingers.

I missed so much cable TV pop culture growing up because my dad was a cheapskate.

My dad was the same way. Nickelodeon was something I watched weekends with my mom.
My parents split when was 2 years old, and thankfully my mother eventually got cable at her place when I turned 5 years old in 86, and eventually my own 13in TV in my bedroom so I binged a lot of cable TV growing up when I was at her place being able to watch just about anything short of adult content.
My dad just could not get cable ran to his house no matter what as he was outside of the town limits, and the local cable company refused to run it, plus a big C-Band sat dish was just way too expensive, and so when I was at his place, it was rabbit ears only till 95 when he got his first DirecTV setup, and it was a self install deal taking us a weekend to install having to cut down a few pine trees in the backyard for line of sight, and the wait for the concreted pole for the dish to dry, even after all of that it only allowed for viewing on a single TV, so I was stuck watching what him, or my stepmom wanted to watch if they were home, and using the living room TV.
My grandparents did not get cable because of cost till the early 2000's, so when I stayed at their place it was rabbit ears only as well, but at least we could pick up WTBS from Atlanta with the powered roof antenna with a rotator for WCW Saturday Night Wrestling, and some old school cartoons, so I kind of felt your pain growing up as well to some degrees.
We were dirt poor begged my Mom for cable just for YCDTOTV on Nick and MTV of course. Got it for a whole summer in 3rd grade it was one of the best summers ever!
We lived in the middle of nowhere. We didn't get cable at our house until I was 15. I missed a lot. I begged for a satellite dish, but that was back when dishes were about as big as a car.

Growing up in Ottawa made this show all the more special. Like many here, I had a huge crush on Moose. Angie the talking doll was working as a waitress at the Egin Street Diner in the 90s and I couldn't resist saying "Hey, you're Angie the talking doll". She blushed a little. Too much fun.
So cool you mentioned that this show was popular in Saudi Arabia! My parents worked for the oil company there in the 80's, and the only television station in English was run by the same oil company for its expat employees (channel 3). The selection of shows was limited, and often heavily censored, but the children's programming was great. Knight Rider, Automan, Airwolf, You Can't Do That On Television...these were all must-see-tv back then. Thanks for the walk down memory lane...love this channel!

I grew up in Saudi Arabia throughout the 90s and You Can't Do That on Television was definitely one of the highlights of local television for the first few years. Unfortunately, despite constantly rotating the same programming year in and out, it was at some point pulled from rotation, despite its immense popularity and was never seen again, which is a damn shame. We tried to replicate the slime formula (water, flour, and food colouring according to one episode), but it never quite turned out the same for us.
Also, totally had the biggest crush on moose as a budding 8 to 10 year old.
Pinwheel was first but you better believe this show is a close second to remembering Nickelodeon shows.

Bill Burr has jokes about going to a football game and everyone having to wear pink to "stand up to cancer". He goes to the game to forget about that stuff. He's hyper aware about the reality around him. He needs a break. He needs some fun. He needs some joy. Cancer is outside, but the game is here to help him recouperate so he can go back out into the world.
This channel is about recouperating and joy - being reminded of the joy of a great toy or tv show and all the positive memories tied in with it. Your passion makes me feel uplifted and makes me feel connected.
Do we really need to throw political pot shots at people? I'm VERY aware of the politics around me. But I need to recouperate so I can think clearly and feel some joy in a world that feels like it wants to kick me when I'm down. I don't want politics...from ANY side...thrown into that.
You do you. If you guys need to say what you say, more power to you. It's your channel. But if you are in this to share your joy, it's hard to get on board when you are seething anger.

I grew up on this. Thank you, TG, for diving into this show and highlighting its influence on an entire network and an unfathomable number of toys, games and shows. I think about this show nearly everyday and an overjoyed that it can be found on streaming.

I grew up in Canada watching from Edmonton, on YTV. This show is the best kind of nostalgia and remains iconic in my mind. My favourite skit for the show was "The Boogeyman". It's a classic scenario; with a little kid, in bed, huddling under his covers in fear. The closet door bangs open to reveal a man disco dancing...classic stuff.

The one funny thing I've noticed over the years is how few people noticed that the mother in Dexter's Laboratory was inspired by the housewife in the You Can't Do That on Television skits.

Yeah, those claiming all the Trump hate is just political didn't grow up on the east coast. That piece of human garbage would get marched out on the nightly news every few years for his latest scam or other shamelessly shady or illegal thing he had been caught doing. Trump and the Teflon Don, Jon Ghotti were the two pieces of trash that I remember seeing on the news all through my childhood back in the 80s who always seem to somehow slip the long arm of the law.

I LOVED you can’t do that on television and Moose and Lisa were my first TV crushes. The first show I ever saw on Nickelodeon though was Pinwheel. I thought Plus and Minus were like a dollar store version of Bert and Ernie 😂

Best show ever when I was a kid. I used to watch it on the giant satellite dish back in the 80’s!!! Lots of memories. Nickelodeon was really underrated back then. I also remember DYING to get on Double Dare too. And if you ever got on ANY of those shows, you NEVER wanted to say “I don’t know”. You would immediately be slimed!!
I love "You Can't Do That On Television." My favorite episode were when the Soviet Union tried to infiltrate the broadcast. Barf's Cafe, the Locker Room, and the Dungeon were cool.

I remember around '90 when my family moved into town, as opposed to being outside of town, we suddenly had cable. For me, that meant Nickelodeon. For my big brothers, it meant MTV. I fondly recall watching this show, along with other shows like Hey Dude, and Welcome Freshman.
When I was a kid I went to nickelodeon in Orlando and got to see someone get slimed.... They got a little paddling pool and the dude stood in it wearing a huge plastic poncho while they got about a mugs worth of slime and emptied it on his head. It was so lame I think that's the day my childhood died
Me and my dad (my dad and i) also won the challenge against another 2 visitors to the park... Up on stage in front of an audience...did we win anything? A shirt? A keyring? A hat? Nope. We got nothing. Man I hate that place so much

I watched this religiously as a kid and also remember Turkey TV. I was thrilled that the last time John Mulaney was on SNL, they actually let him do a You Can't Do That on Television skit.
I have met Abby Hagyard on several occasions at Cons here in Ottawa. She's always a returning guest at Fanaticcon. She's quite popular at the conventions.
Pinwheel was the first show I remember on Nickelodeon
I remember growing up on this show, watching it on CJOH whenever it was airing. Was such a classic for Canadian children's entertainment, more mature than some other 'for kids' shows, especially ones that air today. In a fun twist of fate, I keep seeing Abby Hagyard at the various conventions that I attend with my Ghostbusters group, she even has the Lockers from the show, as well as her "Mom Abby" outfit!
One side note: Another great children's/early teen tv series from Canada you should check out is: Street Cents. A informative news-type show teaching kids the basics of business, finances and what new products are out there. (Aired on CBC from 1989-2006) I always remember it for their "Fit for the Pit" segments!
Used to love watching Street Cents, it's where I first saw Jonathan Torrens
This show had the balls to kill off kids in their skits. I remember one when the terrible cook character was killing off kids with his terrible cooking. Good times.

What I like is that it reminded me of how me and my friends/sibling would play back in the 80s. The jokes and subject matter were often relatable to me when I watched this regularly in 1986.
Kids in the 80's understood concepts of communication that are lost on kids today. Hell, some GROWNUPS don't understand them. Nuance, timing, context, intent, euphemism, sarcasm, irony.....IRONY!!! The woman who single handedly caused most of the western world to misunderstand the concept of irony was once on a show that used irony in many bits!! (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻
First show I watched was that weird one where all the mannequins came to life after the store closed. Honestly You Can't Do That On Television was just odd for me, but by the time I was old enough to actually watch it, it was almost 10 years old. Still neat to go back and see how mature a show was for the time and still keep it kid friendly.

I stumbled upon this show in 1986 while staying at my grandma’s house that had cable TV. It was amazing. That era of Nick was pretty awesome.

I loved that show so much as a kid that I wanted to be a cast member. I wrote a letter to Nickelodeon headquarters to ask how I could audition. They wrote me back saying I had to live in Canada and sent a kite and stickers with the silver ball branding they had at the time. I was disappointed but also happy that they responded.
I watched it all the time back in the day. I had no idea it wasn't a Nick original until many years later, but it still holds a place in my heart.

I loved this show when I was a kid. I think one of the most fun times I had with TV as a kid is the episode where they put red and green boxes at the bottom of the screen. You were supposed to "vote" on what happened next. I think we all understood it was a recorded show, and the voting wasn't real, but we still gathered around the TV to hit those buttons on the screen.
As a Canadian I loved the show growing up. Wish high quality versions of all the episodes could be put up for everyone to enjoy.

When they shut down my channel I had over 3 million subs and a lot of retro kid's tv shows and cartoons that were never released on DVD at that time. I remember how she was treated by the Canadian press when her first video came out for her first album, (the one with Matt Leblanc in it). She was the “As seen on You Can’t Do That on Television” girl. But by the time Jagged Little Pill arrived, they had switched it to calling her the “You Can’t Do That in a Movie Theatre” girl.

Crazy to think a gag on a syndicated show basically became the identity for Nickelodeon for mine and a lot of other people's childhood I'm sure. I think a little part of me always hoped to get slimed anytime I say "I don't know" even today.

As a Canadian kid growing up in the 80s, You Can't Do That on Television was a staple of my childhood. Green Slime, truly one of Canada's greatest gifts to the world.

Just a note that the "Joke School Lockers" sequences were clearly heavily based on the "Joke Wall" from Laugh-In.

I absolutely lived for this show circa my 4-6 year old self. LOVED. It sticks with me too..."I don't know" is something I still think about every time it's said.
