At 5 years old, owning a few figures but never having seen the movie because there were no VCRs, this was an AMAZING TV show!!! Not nearly as bad as everyone now makes out. My parents were both in the Air Force and were stationed in Japan when Star Wars came out and hit it big, but it would be another year before they would be stationed back in the States. There are two major references to the Holiday Special in the first season of The Mandalorian. In the pilot episode before Mando’s bounty is frozen in carbonite he nervously explains he’d like to get back to his planet for Life Day. Later on in subsequent episodes we see flashbacks to when Mando’s parents were killed by Separatist droids. They’re all wearing the same Life Day robes as Chewie from the holiday special.

I remember having the Snaggletooth figure as a kid but don't think I ever even heard of the Holiday special until TH-cam came out. Its really strange that they thought a variety show would some how be interesting to the audience who would be more excited to see a show that included more space battles and action like the original movie. The cartoon is really has more of a psychedelic look than the ones on Saturday morning. They never made a Star Wars cartoon until 1984 after the final film at the time had come out. It didn't last long one called Droids and the other based on the Ewoks. Recently we all got excited when we saw the millennium falcon again. Star Wars mania really took off when they relaunched the movies and put out the prequels. Children of the 70s remember Star Wars and the impact it had in pop culture and to the generation of youth at the time.

It's not that the whole thing is canon, just the specific elements that get reused. It's kind of clever, what they're doing... Current writers can basically pick and choose among all the weirdness from the first 30 years of Star Wars for the good bits, while ignoring the stuff that didn't work or gets in the way. The Disney canon wipe has basically functioned like a low-key Crisis event, in practice.
(I mean, "Solo" name-dropped Teras Kasi of all things, and that game wasn't strictly canon even at the time.)

What Star Wars fans, who were born after the original trilogy, should understand about the Holiday "Life Day" Special, was that when it aired, fans were very hungry, waiting for a sequal - There was a 3 yr gap, from the time that the first episode came out, in the summer of 1977, until the release of "The Empire Strikes Back" in late spring of 1980. 3 yrs seems like a very long time, in the minds of young people, so the Holiday Special fit snugly in between - 1& ~1/2 yrs after the release of the original Star Wars, and about the same length of time prior to the release of what would then be the first Star Wars sequal & 2nd film, in the original trilogy.
We didn't have the internet, back then, so it was much easier for Hollywood to keep secrets about any details of films that were in production ( & forget about scene footage leaking, for the public to see, prior to the airing of a trailer, which were most often only seen as previews of upcoming movies, at the theatre, and which weren't aired, on broadcast tv, until a few wks prior to a film's release in theatres).
There was no net flex, either, and it wouldn't be until the early 1980's that vcr's (video cassette players/recorders) became commonplace in most homes, in America - (And movie rental places, like Blockbuster Video, wouldn't appear, for a few yrs after that, once everyone had vcr's - Video players were luxury items, at first, so not all homes had them). Even cable tv was a new phenomenom, with HBO appearing first, as an individual cable channel, that only the rich had; And it wasn't like today's cable subscriptions where u get tons of channels. (There were only one or two - HBO, followed by Cinemax, with multi-channel subscription cable packages coming several yrs later). We had tv, via mostly local analog broadcasts, with major urban areas usually having about a dozen channels (that typically went off the air, between 2am until 5 or 6 am. Rural areas, and less populated states often only received broadcasts from the 3-4 major
    networks.
So, in those days (when the Holiday Special first aired, in late 1978) we didn't have anywhere near the amount of entertainment choices, that we have today, and the original Star Wars had been a ground-breaking film, with special effects, that were far ahead of it's time. (Not even the original Star Trek series, could compare; And even the first Star Trek movie (which came over a decade AFTER the original Star Trek tv series) the first Star Trek movie was largely considered a flop, as it could't match the special effects revolutionized by Lucas Films. Only the "Battlestar Galactica" tv series came close (and the original series only lasted for a couple of seasons). Other cutting edge, made for tv sci-fi (like the short run "LOGAN's RUN") produced (or at least, only aired, it's initial pilot, and only a hand full of 30-60 minute episodes that did not survive a full season. That may have been because the special effects & set design were incredibly challenging (& expensive to produce), as no one (not even the major studios) really had computers (with the few computers that existed at that time being limited mostly to data processing, and tended to be enormous machines that took up an entire room or building). Only the government & major corporations, and a limited number of higher, elite academic institutions had them.
So, The demands for broadcast tv (to say, produce a weekly episode) were much more challenging than for a movie franchise that produced only one movie per year (or in the case of the original Star Wars trilogy, every 3 yrs.
The original Star Wars trilogy was revolutionary, for cinematic effects (Lucas used the profits from the first film, to develop Skywalker Sound, which created additional digital sound effects, such as Dolby & Surround Sound.
So, when the Holiday Special first aired, it wasn't considered a flop. Because, Fans were starving, still waiting for the first sequal! Sure, in hindsight, today, when it's viewed by someone who didn't grow up in that era, parts of it might seem a little goofy, unrealistic, ir cartoonish (and yes, the holiday special even included a short cartoon episode of Luke & Boba Fett, viewed by Chewbacca's young son). But, film making & broadcast entertainment, in the late 1970's, was no where near anything like whst we've got today. (Mostly, probably because computers weren't widespread (not even among businesses) and so all of the effects had to be created without the use of digital technology).

Think of it this way: The Holiday Special is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in the SW universe.
    Why?
It was the first thing that officially made Star Wars a "going concern". Before this, it was a movie. But with this, the characters and the settings proved that they had life beyond just the movie. The special cemented Star Wars as a BRAND, not just a film. It showed there was more out there than we'd yet seen. This is the first thing that appeard as a continuation, almost a sequel, of the original movie. It's not a standalone thing. It is set firmly after Ep. 4 and before Ep.5, and it interacts with them.
So, while it is awful, and funny in a very bad way, it's also supremely important. I proved that Star Wars was a brand that could be adapted to various kinds of media and could even take a beating... even if it was from itself.
I don't know about you, but to me that makes it more cannon than any of the three new movies.
