This is The Flaming Lips I remember! Great live band. Drums & Guitar are just pounding! Thanks for posting. I miss them when they were "just a psychedelic punk band."
This is the Lips that I fell in love with. They kind of lost me when Wayne hung up the guitar in favor of the sock puppets, but I will always have a soft spot for these guys, this era.
There are basically two types of Flaming Lips fans: those who know and appreciate and love their whole evolving catelogue AND then those who only know them through the success of Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi. This line-up in the video is my personal favorite even though their live shows during the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi tours were fucking amazing as well.
I saw them live around this time period and frankly I'm surprised you got as much sound fidelity that you did! It was the loudest concert I've been to. Thank you for sharing this video!
I remember when I got this record..I was like what the hell is this,,.,,,,flipping great..It sounds like it was loud as hell there...AWESOME...Turn it on....
I love you! Thank you so much for posting this, its an awesome clip, I love the Lips and this is one of my favourites of their early stuff! Please keep 'em coming! We need more early Lips footage on here
OK...so Ron"s Dad was an expert HAM radio dork and made Ron all sorts of function boxes and weird feedback boxes. Obviously Ron was the mastermind, Ron's bag was having two of everything, I still own two Boss SE-70's because of that. That said...no matter what box you own...you will never achieve his level of genius. The man was/is ahead of his time,
neither of those would surprise me considering some of the pedals I have seen him play in other videos. I think there is a quote in Fearless Freaks where Wayne says something like "if he gets any more pedals, it will kill him". Either way though, his intro is 100% righteous and I really miss his contributions to the Lips.
I can't say for sure, but I have a couple of ideas: 1) ring modulator w/expression pedals for the rate and carrier frequency feeding into a delay. Then couple that with the slide and whammy bar that he uses most of the time. 2) some sort of arpegiator/whacked out chorus pedal (an Ibanez DML10 would do the trick), fed into a bit crusher/low rate sampler.
well with sounds like the ones ronald jones plays, a guitarist has to have a lot of intuition and knowledge. Most guitarists, especially nowadays, just use some delay and reverb to make an "echoey-sweetness" that is very nostalgic. But to really break out of a mold, a guitarist has to find their own sound... no one wants to "play-like-ronald-jones"...
"I'm not sure anyone wants to see early live footage of when the Flaming Lips were just a psychedelic punk band. " -Are ya fucking kidding me? There's nothing I'd like to see/hear more!
I PROPOSED TO MY GIRLFRIEND AT THIS SHOW. HER INCREDIBLY CUTE SISTER WAS WITH US. AND WE HAD A SUPER INTENSE THREESOME WHEN WE GOT HOME. TO THIS DAY IT'S BASICALLY ALWAYS BEEN THE THREE OF US. PLUS A COUPLE TIMES I HAD THE MOM. BUT NEVER ALL THREE AT ONCE. MAYBE SOMEDAY!
I fucking love this song, but my favourite part is the way the drums kick in on the studio track... Sad they omitted that from this performance but a great show nonetheless. If only I had been a bit older than 76 days old when it was performed but oh well :')
im glad there arent though, because i think it would really ruin a moment like this for me if... say, anyone was like " hey look... hes playing like the guy from deer hunter or elephant ass or any of those generic animal, or no thought like name bands with beards that are all out nowadays" i think theres one called glove even?... i think?... yeah terrible- thank goodness for this though.

sadly it's as if they've gone out of their way to erase this era from their history.
@@mrskinszszs yeah sure man, that's why they just released a deluxe reissue for cloud taste metallics and b-sides from 1994-1997...
@@colete888 ok good for them, but they still largely ignore their guitar rock era from their live sets.

so pounding!
THE. GREATEST. BAND. EVER. I miss you Mr. Jones!
Thank you for posting this! This is my favorite era of the Lips, when they were just a straight up rock band.

Ronald's guitar sounds were such a trip. Too bad he wasn't really made for life on the stage.
Hey look; It's Wayne playing an instrument!
Thank you for this, there are so few early videos of them.
I think there is some footage in the bonus materials section of the Fearless Freaks DVD.
this is so Badasss! Also one of my fave Flaming Lips Videos.
Awesome rare footage man!
I'd love to see the rest of this!
amazing! thank you for uploading! I wonder how they sound live now.

You were so fortunate to witness this.
seeing them live during this period was like a religious experience.

!!
I Love it! Please post more!!!!
thats a mighty fine start there, young one!
The distortion is due to the fidelity limitations of the camcorder's microphone.
seriously this is awesome
this is really great thanks for posting it
Cool it's uploaded I was there. fun show
I just noticed the Sonic Youth "Evol" poster on the mic stand!
I think that's just the Lung Leg photo that was used on Evol.

I saw them way back in 1989 at Metro in Chicago

Nice! Live 105 back in the day!

Just like Steve and myself were doing in 1983! 🤪
They've certainly come a long way :)

Great clip, dude!!!
Gods of Rock!✌❤🐺
Both Flaming Lips are great but I'd love it if they'd crank up the noise and do this one more time.
Very nice
hey i was there! is there any footage of the mosh pit? or the chrowd jumping around? Good times! thanks for posting this jewel
I like it!
if you by chance get this message you should definitely post the full show at the very least. sending it to Wayne would be cool too
for godsake man post more of this
Steven needs to get back on the drums in their live act and play some March of the Rotten Vegetables live
Please, Please, Please post more! I've been a Lips fan since the early days, and would love to see more from this era. How can I get a copy?
Hey 27 years ago today
brillant!
Where is it? Sharing is Caring. Also they're still cool
holy fuck, awesome
Man this is great. This band was kind of my gateway into avant-rock. In the pre-internet days this was pretty heady stuff for a fifteen year-old.
Was Kliph still drumming with them back then?
Nah, Kliph only started drumming after Yoshimi when they toured with Beck. Steven was the drummer at the tme here. Awesome stuff!
how the heck does ronald make those lovely sounds at the start. id love to know
Turd Ferguson hopefully you figured it out by now but it sounded like a ring modulator to me.
I'm nervous
Ring mod, delay, phaser, pitch shifter, fuzz, feedback. But then again I have no idea really.
Come on bro where's that drum drop
