- “My family assumed I was killed on the battlefield.”
In this compelling video, Nyugen Van Be, (Field Medic, Republic of Vietnam Military, 1969-1975) describes his life of defending his homeland of South Vietnam, becoming a prisoner of war and returning home to discover his family had fled Vietnam. After relocating to Australia in 1996, he credits his family's safety and success to the Australian government and the peaceful society it upholds.
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. These heartbreaking and inspiring stories remind us of the sacrifices veterans make for their country.
My grandfather was an officer in the ARVN. He was a captain by the start of the war and by the end, he was a major. He didn't rank up a lot because he didn't see much combat due to his job. He was a civil engineer. After the war, he was put into a reeducation camp like this veteran here. When he was released in 1984, he moved to the US and built a house for his family. He passed away in December of 2020.
May his soul rest in peace 🙏

US was never intend to defend Vietnam. The US only USED Vietnam to contains ChinCom. after 1969, when US dealt with ChinCom to contains the USSR everything after that is history.😉
And after so many years that kind of scenarios, was also happened in the country of Afghanistan, when they saw that they are no more use to them they simply abandoned them to meet their own fates, at the hands of the enemies.
That's politics to you.
And in fact, Afghan soliders and people were still lucky. They were not sold out by the US to China.
I actually served in Iraq with a dude whose dad fought with Americans during Vietnam. His dad was brought to America and he grew up here. Eventually joining the Army.

In vietnam thousan year allway men want fight for chinese france american get dolla that is dog not country😂😂😂😂😂
any Vietnamese American join the US army all because of their dad influence as a kid growing up.
War is hell, being used for other's political gain is even more hellish for the underdogs.
Having been born under the current VN regime, I can only sympathize for both sides as a human-being that care deeply about other's stories. I could not dare to judge this man or my countryman that once imprisoned him, we all had something to believe in and fought for.
May all souls that lost their way in war be rested peacefully in this new age.
Most intelligent man I've ever seen in the comments, I'm getting old but one thing I've learnt is Vietnamese people will never shit on you . I've belted the shit out of my own race at work but Vietnamese people work hard and help . Will do anything for my Vietnamese mates . Very good people and that war destroyed so many people. No body wins just like a divorce in Australia.
I don't care whatever you were, as a Vietnamese, we are one, no matter what happen.
Because you have balls and are very honourable people.
yeah man
Ko có viện trợ nhưng vũ khí, chuyên gia của Mỹ vẫn hỗ trợ và vẫn thua thì chỉ có thể nói là vấn đề kỹ năng
My father served in the Vietnamese Marines because they were better trained and fed well. He avoided ARVN mainly because it was conscripted and there was a lot of graft and corruption. He wished things were different with how the structure was ran. But him and all Vietnamese people are in debt to all the democracies that sheltered and adopted us. I can happily say that today, he can pass away peacefully in Vietnam or United States. Both countries are currently strong Allie’s.
Vietnam has no allies and swing like a pendulum from at early as 1995 until now.
thank you so much
Thank you for sharing Nguyen Van Be's story
My Ông Ngoại (Grandpa on moms side) fought in the South Vietnamese army then Air Force. He was a lieutenant (highest rank you could achieve as a draftee). He was sent to a re-education camp and faked an incurable illness, so after 30 days of faking they let him go (since they thought he was going to die). He then went back to my family, and took all of them to America. I was born in the USA and he died when I was 17 (now 23). Forever greatful for what he did for my family.

During the Vietnam War, Australian troops suffered the least casualties because they were smart enough by dispersing themselves on the battle fields. Otherwise they would get destroyed by communists' heavy shelling. They scored a big win over the commies at the battle of Long Tan near Nui Dat, Province of Ba Ria.
There was also far fewer Aussies deployed.
Aussies fought bravely, but they also fought in fewer operations. Control your hubris.

As a Vietnamese living in the Vietnamese nation under the red flag of the gold star, I just accidentally glanced at this video and I felt surprised and pitiful for the generation of Vietnamese people like him, who have lived their whole lives for an ideal that is no longer there, fighting all their youth for a meaningless ideal, I don't know if your generation will bury the hatred in the war and carry it with them until they leave or will pass on the hatred of a meaningless hatred to their own compatriots to the next generation, as a Vietnamese living in Vietnam, I hope that my compatriots no matter where they live to be happy and healthy

They were brainwashed that the VC would massacre them if they took over the South, which history recorded was not the case. Regarding the lack of ammunition and equipment, the amount of war booty captured by the VC was worth nearly 5 billion dollars in 1975 and the ammunition was enough for the VC to fight for 10 years in Cambodia. They are simply a mercenary for the US, with no spirit of unifying the country but just following orders. Regarding being in prison, he certainly has never been to the prisons that his regime has reserved for VC throughout the South, especially in Con Dao and Phu Quoc. Tens of thousands of prisoners were tortured to death there without trial. His regime's crimes against its own people are unforgivable, ridiculous for the so-called love of homeland.
Up to this point they still don't realize that they are being taken advantage of, it's pitiful.
It doesnt make sense if I say I want to protect my country but you have to pay me. The fact is the south VietNam army stop working when US stop paying them. On the otherside the VC dont have SALARY but won in the battle field. I'm curious about this man saying he joined the army earlier just because he want to contribute for his country or he just want to have job to make money.
Moral of story is if you dont want it bad enough even with huge support from people the probability that you may fail is high.

The truth is there was no record of bloodbath in Saigon, however there was a silent bloodbath when the re-education start, Vietnam at that time was the largest prison state in South East Asia. Over 1 - 2.5 million people went to re-education camp WITHOUT A SENTENCE & over 150,000 didn't make it out alive - IS 150K not considered a bloodbath? Not to mention, did You know which was the longest imprisonment in re-education camp after 1975? it was over 37 years - in the case of CPT. Nguyen Huu Cau for accusing 2 VC official raped 2 innocent boat-women. You mentioned Phu Quoc? Did you know that in 1973, the VC prisoners that did NOT want to join prisoner exchange over Thach Han River, there were political and civilian prisoners in PHU QUOC, you can't compare the 2 treatment between 2 class of criminals - YOU CAN'T GET IN PHU QUOC PRISON WITHOUT A TRAIL under Republic of Vietnam Laws - you are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
@@nguyenduc8741 You knew that NVA also took support from CHINA, USSR, NORTH KOREA, CUBA, LAOS, CAMBODIAN communist forces as well, right? THE VC DIDN'T HAVE SALARY BECAUSE THEY HAVE FOOD STAMPS BRUH. If you were North Vietnam and DIDN'T join the ARMY at that time, YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WILL STARVE (cắt sổ gạo) because there was centralized economy. After 1972 - 1973, South Vietnam only received around 50% of the support they were promied. ARVN also had a widespread corruption & MIDDLE LEVEL LEADERSHIP - NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT, but comparing a 1975, ARVN was alot weaker in 1972 but they managed to win Easter Offensive ( Chiến Dịch Xuân Hè by the VC), in April 30th, Br General Le Minh Dao held Xuan Loc for 12 consecutive days. It was a feat in itself!
My grandfather was an ARVN airbone Sergeant. He defended Saigon in the last day till the last bullet. The North commie sent him to the concentration camp for 2 years and took our home in Saigon, sent the rest of our family to their so-called “New economy zone”. When the French defeated and left Vietnam in 1954. The country divided into two partition states: North Vietnam is the communist and the South is Republic under Democracy government. So, let both side of Vietnam run their countries the way they want. The American participated in to assist by providing aids to South Vietnam to fight back the International Communist (that is Soviet Union and China). So, the US helped South Vietnam so long until 1973 and declared to withdraw cutting significant aids to South Vietnam. The let South Vietnam fight alone against North Vietnam (North Vietnam with the helps from Soviet and China)...and so those nations (US, Australia, Korea, Philippines, Thailand and the whole West) under Democracy running away. Sounds great, huh? Ultimately, the citizens of the Republic of South Vietnam collapsed and its people stranded and faced the consequences of all cost: jails, rapes, rootings, refugees, death, poor, loss....You name it. Why the West entered the war rather let South Vietnam taking care of their country from the beginning, so they didn't depend on the West? You promised and ran away from this war.

South Vietnam is democratic? hahahah sure buddy
@@SovietChickenNoodle South Vietnam before 1975 was just a puppet regime set up by the US hahahaha
They didn't promise to be in a forever war. I guess you are forgeting that the US had 58,000 soldiers killed in Vietnam. They had already lost over 30,000 troops to hold South Korea less than two decades prior as well. It's hard to sell tens of thousands of your own soldiers dying half a world away for people you don't really know or share much with culturally. The US also isn't a dictatorship. So every 4 years public opionion can change etc.
Also, the US didn't lose a single major battle in Vietnam. The issue was they were not going to invade and occupy the North. So they opted to instead fund the south and provide aid. Unless the world was ok with the US taking control and dominating the entirety of North Vietnam, it was pointless.
The saddest part? The US won anyways. Communsim in Russia, China, and Vietnam all collapsed in the 80s. Now all 3 are primarily capitalist countries and all attached to the US and Western Europe for economic success. The war didnt even need to happen.
@@SovietChickenNoodlethe fact that you have Soviet in your name discredits you from any criticism of South Vietnamese politics. While South Vietnam did have its problems, it was a very new democracy and was at least more democratic than the North and had multiple parties and vibrant debate, and was making improvements year by year. The North remains an entrenched single party authoritarian tyranny.
Thank you and appreciated Mr Be for telling the truth of The South Republic of Vietnam fought against VC for protecting the freedom and democracy of The South Vietnam. My dad was member of The South VN Army's Paratrooper Division's 204 Military Police was died by The North communist regime's revenge on all over both military members and civil officials for the South Republic Vietnam. I just want to commend everyone for the unwavering support. We celebrate Veteran’s day with fervor and joy. Please don’t ever feel guilt or shame. The past is painful. But our futures are bright.
After the French was defeated the country was set to vote for Ho Chi Minh or Ngo Dinh Diem as president and reunite the country. Ngo knew he would lose against HCM so with the US support he decided to power grab by breaking the Geneva treaty signed by the South masters French. Vietnam was never 2 parts so HCM fought the South VN to liberate and reunite Vietnam 🇻🇳 as one
Blatant communist lie! It was France and China that came up with the Geneva Accord of 1954 to divide Viet Nam into 2 halves separated by the 17th parallel: the North for Communists, and the South for Nationalists.
And these idiots have the nerve to say that North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam when the us literally meddled in their election just install a puppet leader who was an unpopular leader that most people didn't even want.

Based on the comments I read at the time of writing, here are my thoughts of the war, both mainstream, and sources from people in the south. Have fun reading.
"The US originally 'invaded' Vietnam" -> This is commonly taught to everyone in Vietnam post '75. However, South Vietnam (RVN) was created by the co-operation of the new southern government (successors of the final Emperor of Vietnam + a French handover of leadership) with the US (the "liberators" and French's successor that want to kick out the French but don't want to leave due to communism).
South Vietnam's "illegitimacy" -> This ties in with the first. While the idea that the US prop up a "puppet state" in the South spread after '75, the same can be said to the north. The southern government at least have the lineage date back to the Nguyen dynasty (the final dynasty in Vietnam). The flag is also a final version from the previous dynasty's flag (yellow flag with red circle) with a mix of the history of the French colonial era (white flag with 2 blue stripes). The northern flag have little source to prove its lineage. Official the red and yellow star is a new creation after the formation of the new northern government in '45. But other sources cites the appearance of the red flag from southern China. The flag was seen moving to Vietnam when the Kuomintang liberation force cross the border to arrive at Hanoi. Couple this with photo evidences of South VN's flag hanged around Hanoi post '45, and the way communist parties work (there is no such thing as nations in socialism; they are part of the larger sphere of influence), there can be a legitimate case to say the Soviet and China "prop up" the northern government. Both government were legit, and both were heavily influenced during the entire war.
US soldiers' brutality -> There are videos of US soldiers in villages and cities everywhere. But rarely any photos from soldiers in the north. They are infamous for scaring and disguising among southern civilians, which make it difficult for southern and US soldiers to advance (these gorilla tactics are reveal by northern soldiers after the war). War is always brutal. But the south have freedom of press that allowed quick communication from the frontline to the media back in the US. Effectively dooming the support for the war.
Agent Orange -> Real effects or false claims. Look for correlation between the agent and people, vs the agent for plants. They work on plants, but their effects on people are mostly on presumptions. The US still allocate money for the recovery effort, which is good regardless (because whether the correlation is real, the civilians still need help). There is little mention of food rations, many are full with unknown preservatives, that were supplied from China to the same regions where agent orange were presumably used. These rations are not tested, and where delivered straight to people in poorer central regions. There is a sharp difference in the number of cases where people were affected by agent orange, with central regions affected the most. It's also strange that the central region were where supplies from the north arrived into the most; and many cases of agent orange are people in families that have contacted to north Vietnamese soldiers.
There are a lot more. You can start looking into them. English sources are limited but you can also translate the Vietnamese articles from both mainland Vietnam and overseas for further information. Try to authenticate and explore these:
- Origins of Ho Chi Minh (this guy have evidences that he were born in China; the where able the original person Nguyen Ai Quoc after he left Vietnam is unknown)
- The naming of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. This re-enforced the claim above. Throughout history, the last name was used when referring to the dynasty, while the middle and first name was for normal naming. (Nguyen dynasty. Emperor Nguyen Phuc (Bao Dai), Tran dynasty, Emperor Tran Thanh Tong. Or the famous general Giap (Vo Nguyen Giap)). No one called other as their last name. But Ho Chi Minh was always referred to as 'uncle Ho', not 'uncle Minh'
- Claims of corruptions in the south from the north and US reporters. Locate their sources (for example, every government will have some form of small corruptions. But the north claimed that the failure of controlling corruption is one of the main causes of the south's collapse. In the mean time, the final president of RVN have a friendly policy with the north, and the former prime minister of RVN - Nguyen Cao Ky, fled Vietnam, and become friendly with the new government again. Soldiers in the rank have family members in the north army. Some even provide money to support the war and to get a good pardon afterward. There were traitors left and right in the southern chain of command that 'corruption' was the least of their worries.
- Interesting story: Former president Nguyen Van Thieu and the 'missing' 16 tons of gold 'fiasco'. The legitimacy of the accusations. (fun fact, the gold were still in the country, yet people escaped Vietnam were still accusing Thieu of shipping them to the US in a few 'luggage bags')
- Lasting consequences of the socialist reforms from '75 to '86 (that's why Vietnamese currency have so many 00000)
- Southern liberation front: A socialist government yet more friendly to the west. Working in tandem with the north for years to liberate the south, dissolved a month after reunification.
Pol-Pot: The leader guy were buddies with Mao and Ho for years. Until he went rogue and decimate Cambodia. Then invade Vietnam in '78, in which Vietnam have to occupy Cambodia for nearly a decade.

Any regime has its dark sides, and I do not completely deny the dark sides of the VC, but it's funny when the soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam talk about how they were treated when they went ideological re-education, that is only a small part compared to what VC had to endure, typically Phu Loi prison, you guys can search on gg for more =) It's clear that the crimes of the Republic of Vietnam are uncountable. You guys just made this video and exclaimed: "Oh, the VC are so cruel", but do you dare to brag about your achievements? Typical example is Ngo Dinh Diem's guillotine :)
Bruh, Vietnam, Afghanistan...if this keeps on, USA might lead against France in running away from battles.
It was the British who ran away from the Germans when they invaded France and Belgium in WW2, leaving a huge hole in the allied line.
They also gave just about all the materiel they had as a gift to the Germans when they left at Dunkirk.

Nice talk, very nice. Now let's talk about the crimes the Republic of Vietnam (southern Vietnam) did to its people and the crimes America did in Vietnam
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Read the books "The Night They Burned The Mountain" and "Deliver Us From Evil" which describes the terror the communists created by mass rape, torture and murder of innocent civilians in the south as a psychological weapon against them.
Also, 1 million people moved from the north to the south before the communists closed the border.

Anyone or any nation with US on their side stand to lose one day or the other. They will leave them as well and when policy changes as it suits them.
See Ukraine, now Taiwan on the line.
South Vietnamese paid a heavy price.
Sounds like Ukraine
Same thing. The usual Americans will leave out any Ukrainians who died while saying America lost none. Count on it. Hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese died fighting for America and the common American boasts leaves those South Vietnamese out of the kill count when they were fighting and putting effort into the fight. They boast about only American losses. That’s pride and hatred. For the Vietnamese They never cared about you and were never your friends.
vậy mà còn sống ?
In our eyes, the people of the Republic of Vietnam and the remaining elements after the war are what we call "selling the country". Dear Western friends, do not feel sorry for the Republic of Vietnam, Because during the war, we in the North were hungry, we cried because the Americans bombed us, and we had no food to eat. As for the people of the Republic of Vietnam, they ate and clothed themselves happily until the country lost their homes. They were trying to run away, they thought we were devils. The above veteran's experience while going to re-education camp is still the same. light from our perspective. During those years of war, our ancestors were tortured, locked up in small prison camps without even light. They were tortured, beaten and sentenced to death. My comment is not intended to be provocative, but just to explain to everyone the misery of our Vietnamese people, including the people of the Republic of Vietnam and Northern Vietnam.
