- Benny Hill backed by the Ladybirds performing Ernie on the Benny Hill show in 1970. The clip is in black and white because of industrial action by the technicians union. Obviously no expense was spared on the props LOL.
I found out about this "Having only been born in 1990", recently, because of visiting my father and him and my little brother and sister was playing the Harry Potter quiz game. The question it came up on was "In the prisoner of Azkaban, who was the character Ernie?". To which my father gave the answer, "He drove the fastest milk cart in the west".
Which led me here! And it was worthit!! Love the older comedy. Was so much smarter than now days.
Dear Benny we need you more than ever. Brilliant wit.
I was work when I lift school , at 16 , was on a milk round , for 10x years , great times ,from northern Ireland UK,,!
Great clip thanks. They didn't need a lot of props - Benny and The Ladybirds had charm wit and talent.
RIP Maggie Stredder (1936 - 2018)
The first time I've seen this particular clip and I was around when it was originally broadcast. Sheer genius. Thanks for posting.
Me too. I remember it from the later 70s. I was just a baby when this clip was first aired.
Benny Hill was a genius. He was very shabbily treated in the last decade or so of his life by the TV power-brokers, who fell completely for the "alternative comedy" confidence trick.
He was, God Bless Him. He was a sweet, gentle soul. And he just offered up half an hour a week of silly, a bit cheeky, slapstick fun. It was wonderful.
Marian Davies, Maggie Stredder and Gloria George were these Ladybirds at the time.
I Loved Old Benny Hill, so funny and this Eirne song is so so funny and well put together, :-)
thank you
Just Brilliant. Thanks for posting.
Fantastic,thanks for the upload
Rest in peace
Great upload. I remember my mate had this on a reel to reel taped from this telecast. Though it was a few years after this original telecast
I remember this song. It was a Number 1 Hit in the UK in 1971.
It was. And rightly so.
I was a milkman, back in 1984, when I was 16,, !
the ladybirds were fab .They must have backed everyone on TOTPs back then
Great
This is one of the few Benny Hill songs in which The Ladybirds (Besides oohing and or aahhing) have solo parts to sing without the usual Benny Hill singing along with them.
Benny Hill back in 1970.
"ernie was only 68" benny was 68 when he died.
In the recording of this song I first heard, Benny clearly said: "Ernie was only 52."
So, seeing this video clip just now was quite eerie, what with that mention of "68."
*shudders @ that fact*
Wow! I didn't know that. *Cue Twilight Theme* He went far too soon, darling lad.
This gave me aid😕lol
original version the best
benny hill=comedy god
Benny worked as a milkman before becoming a comedian.
Did he? Awww bless. I can picture him doing it too.
