I couldn't possibly care less what your videos *look* like, whether it's a studio or the corner of a home office. It's what you *say* that keeps me coming back. So as long as you stay you, all will be well.
I really wish Linux advocates wouldn't constantly complain about proprietary software it has its place just like everything else.

I agree with you exchanging terms for proprietery garbage, mainly because Im not fluent in english and want to learn more about the english language. If you think so, you can be very eloquent and verbose when you say things about Linux.

Garbage as in “not deserving of anyone’s time or patronage” (because it’s non-free) rather than some lack of usefulness and quality in a program

Hey DT, can you talk about your keyboards, different sizes and layouts, the split keeb in the back and which switches you prefer.
dt's keeb is bloated too many keys get a corne kit. only 42 keys to make it wireless you can get a couple of nicenanos.

The one in the background is the one he uses, it's an ergo dox.
Not a hardware note, but I don't like any software keyboard layout (the symbol placements) so I went ahead and done my own layout based over the US one I guess. The only good thing is when someone tries to write with on my computer, he doesn't understand why letters are correct but not symbols ^^
+1 for the synaptic tip! That was exactly my journey and I still love synaptic to this day!
Hey DT, don't trash your studio - it is fine. Video and sound are fine, and it is part of the DT brand. All you need is a future full of good content and the world will turn.

A software center can be nice, but it's always gonna be slower than using a terminal. At first it may seem extremely difficult, but it's actually so much easier and faster to type. I only really use a software center to look for programs I don't know about. I personally think the Linux Mint software manager is rather nice though, it's always been pretty smooth for me.

If you hate the cli... try Manjaro... you don’t have to open a terminal at all if you are the average user.
Manjaro is a good choice, you still have access to most of the Arch stuff with a lower barrier of entry. I'm running on my my main system but Ubuntu or my laptop as I couldn't get it working out of the box on that.
DT isnt saying its garbage technically, he thinks its garbage because its proprietary and not open to community changes. It's an ideological position.

Ubuntu is the friendliest app store. if you can do two things in Windows; open the folder - programs files, open the folder documents or music; this means you will have no problem using Ubuntu)
I liked how you made videos in your "own little corner" (like it's your space), that makes a good atmosphere. How would/will be your studio ? Like will it be super clean or just your recording place ? I don't really imagine you in a very light room with a too clean setup, like for some ultra known youtubers... then it's your choice, I'll continue watching your videos whatever you do !

Agreed. If DT really needed a place for unboxing videos, that can be easily accomplished with an 8x12 shed. Feed it with power and a.c. and you've got a great unboxing room. That's what I would do. It seems like DT has a bunch of land when he does his videos in his backyard. I like those videos BTW.

Working from home (something I've technically been able to do for as long as I've been a software developer, but managers wouldn't let me do it) has made this pandemic amazing for me.
I've been work from home for 16 months or so now. Never want to go back to an office.

Dot command is the first thing you learn in this book, Practical Vim, and it's one of the most impressive features I've ever found in any software.
I also love Visual Mode in all its forms as well as applying digits to perform any edit n number of times. Vim is ingenious. I love it!
Etcher is bloat! Use dd 😋.
Fedora app store is great in gnome... no issues, very fast...
Hey DT, remember all the "bloat" videos? Why use Etcher when the dd command works just fine for burning ISOs to a USB stick?

Sweet video here. I liked the Q&A surrounding your typical WM Manager toolkit. I had these questions also. I have DTOS running but was wondering about the finer points of what you had to install and configure. Thanks Derek!
I'm ok with the App stores, they are much better for discovering new apps you didn't know you wanted. Synaptic is great and my backup option, but it's surfing/discoverability for new/small/lesser known apps is pretty low with it just being a fast and stable item list browser with no icons or pictures and simple descriptions.
Also proprietary is not preferred but I think the developer has the freedom to choose how to distribute their app just like we have the freedom to choose to download it. As long as the base Linux tools/libs/frameworks are FOSS I don't care. I use both.

Hell, he hacked a speak and spell for Pete's sake. Annnnnyways. I'm officially and idiot. :) EDIT: I see that keyboard mat in the background with the ergo type keyboard on it and caught your wallpaper lately. Do you build keyboards? I recently flamed out on the mechanicalkeyboards reddit but I am hooked on that hobby for sure. Hobby, crack habit... whatever you want to call it.
The reason DT thinks all propreitary software is garbage because he only installs software and configures them. He does not actually use software to get things done (not too much anyway, I know he does a little bit of video editing). Some things have open source support that is better than proprietary alternatives. Somethings lack open source software. If you think GIMP is as good as Photoshop, you have never used Photoshop or GIMP properly.
Hey DT: Im into linux something like 2 years now. And I like a lot about linux, but I still have a pitfall im allways running into. I try to open stuff with a graphical editor and I dont have the rights to write it. So I have to close my editor, reopen it with root, then my linux of joice is offcourse compliain that its uper unsafe.
I don't kind of get this, why is it so hard to prompt me for elevating my rights? Vscode is able to do it (sorry for mentioning vscode). But I think there must be some reasoning behind it why it can not elevate me on a try. Is it just not "common", or what is it all behind. I appreciate your answer, maybe in another video ;)

Thanks fof graeat vid ! I dont like Ubuntu. Its slower then for examle AVLinux - Debian based. Since the graphical interface has changed dont use Ubuntu at all.

Hey DT , can you calculate how much money it would have all costed you if all your free and open source software was proprietary. So in stead of Linux a window s licence instead of gimp adobe and instead of open office Microsoft. How much money worth would all that be ?
Isn't the Ubuntu software store thingy a snap? That would probably explain the slow comment especially the first impression of any snap. I thought the software I was trying failed to launch and a minute or two later it suddenly popped on screen. If you're not expecting that it can be very frustrating.

It's really interesting to see which particular program *you* use because I know that you've tried out all the alternatives and you've weighed the comparison of the pros and cons for what works for you. Certainly what works for you might not work for me but understanding your thought process willl usually help give me insight.
I'll ask my question here. Hey D.T., are there any pros or cons to moving your dotfiles to a single directory, using said directory for git, and then creating symbolic links to where the dotfiles are needed?
I did that for awhile. Using a shell script to create all of the symlinks. DT shared GNU Stow awhile back. I switched to it, it makes things a little more convenient. But either way works.
Or try a bare git repository. I'm pretty sure DT also did a video on that. There's also a few other videos on it. No need to symlink with a bare repository.

Snap store has a completely transparent background on mint makibg it unusable. Don't care enough to get it working right, but it does force one to learn alternatives.
1:50 only if you know tge name of the package because you dont install programs you install packages. and program names and package names often enough differ.
An office space? Well hopefully it's not a big one. Cause a master bedroom size is good enough for you!

I will say a benefit to the GUI app store is that they combine multiple package managers. The Gnome Software app gives one interface for your distro's package manager (for most distros), flatpak, and snap. It would be convenient if there was a CLI application that could combine all 3.
Synaptic is fantastic, i think there is more software available in it. But perhaps those were dependency packages, but i did found more games, but...

VimGolf is an excellent display of efficiency with Vim just to be more "efficent" and make your hands less fatigued
If it is slow in virt-manager, change CPU model to host-passthrough and enable SMT by adding a line in the XML file. For graphics, if you have a second GPU, that'll give you the best graphics acceleration or single GPU passthrough. To avoid having to do this everytime, just create one VM and then keep cloning it.

When installing Arch, what should you install to mount USB drives? How should you configure that app?
Luke Smith made some scripts to mount drives.
anything except ntfs drives should just work with plain old mount. ntfs-3g for those ntfs thingies.
