Maybe i can help with this? The newer EVH frank p'u comes with a fully charged A2 magnet whereas the relic has a slightly degaussed A2.(weaker) The goal with the relic was to mimic a really old road worn p'u like the one in ED's frankenstein guitar. The weaker magnet makes the relic have less output(creating less gainl)and a softer more rounded tone overall. IF you were to degauss the magnet in the new EVH they would sound the same or vice versa and put a full strength A2 in the relic it would sound like the new EVH one. The maple spacer and leg length do not effect the tone of the p'u at all.
I commented a few years back about these two versions and that info has remained the same but since then the relic version with ED's signature is even more a collectors item than it was just two years ago. One sold for $5000 and i am not joking! Not a bad investment for those that bought one for $499 when they first came out. Now i am not saying you can get $5K for your P'u but one did sell for that much.Personally i would hang onto it. who knows they may be worth $10K in the near future? one never knows in the collector's market. One last thing recently there was a newer version released called the Frankenstein plus. it is a hotter version at 16K instead of 13.5K.The Frankenstein plus is best for the Kramer 5150 and later tones.
Yes, quite insane, isn’t it?? Currently my guitar has the new production pickup in it, and I plan to hang onto the LE pickup…as you say, who knows what they’ll be worth in the future? More importantly, it’s a pretty cool piece of EVH history…. Thanks for the comment!
@@aquadogband If you want the new one to sound more like the relic just Deguass the magnet slightly. or just do it the easy way and buy a $7 roughcast A2 and install it in place of the stock magnet. it will sound exactly like the relic then👍 The RC magnet does not hold as much a charge as a polished magnet like what comes in the standard production Pickup.
@@Murphy_R9 yes, great advice-thank you! I’ve actually found that I slightly prefer the new production in that guitar, at least for now…but I do have a selection of magnets on hand should I decide to try it someday. Thanks again for the comments and insight!
I apologize for my tardy reply, I didn’t get a notification of your comment for some reason. One day mine just stopped working, absolutely nothing, it was very strange. I eventually pulled the pickup and partially disassembled it, and found that the outer braid had completely deteriorated at the spot where it was soldered to the base plate, severing the ground connection. Luckily I hadn’t trimmed the lead when I installed it, so I was able to trim back the wire and reconnect it at a more secure spot in the braid, and it’s working fine now. It appears they got a bit too ‘real’ with their aging process!! Hope this helps!
Thank you! This one was a bit more complex, so she sat this one out...but we have some more of hers in the works. She’s way better at this than me anyway!!

The LE Relic has more of a warm sound.
Curious about the issue you had with the signed 09 pickup. I'm having strange on off behvior with mine. Can you elaborate? Thanks very much.
