That "idiot" was probably Patek Philippe. They bought up rare watches and took them off the market by putting them into their museum. That drove the value of remaining rare watches up, which brings up the price on all their used watches, which increases what they can charge for their new watches, and therefore they profit.

Have a look at the movement for Patek's recent Grandmaster Chime wristwatch. The only thing more remarkable about the pocketwatch is that it was designed without the aid of computers! Just hundreds of years of skill passed down from master to apprentice.

@@rasm6018 a large part of my collection is vintage ladies watches. A 70 or 80 year old ladies watch from a high end Swiss manuf. May still only be a 500-1000 dollars. They aren't in fashion so the market for them is weak, yet the tiny movements are actually MORE enjoyable to inspect because everything is so much smaller. I found a 60's ladies Blancpain at a pawn shop for 70 bucks, the movement was smaller than a dime (a Peseux 60, I believe) but the dial had no name on it and the shop owner didnt think the movement itself for a name. The little lady is just a joy to behold!
Now, if you want a watch you can WEAR, I have much less helpful insight lol

This watch is called the George Thompson Grande Complication, and according to Patek Philippe, it is the third most important double dialled watch they have ever made. Number one is the 1932 Henry Graves Super Complication which sold at Sotheby's in 2014 for $24,000,000 US. Number two is The James Ward Packard Sky-chart Grande Complication, which is in the Patek Philippe museum. Not sure what that one is worth.

Interesting that for the “average”person, owning something like that isn’t a big deal when you figure it’s worth a few thousand dollars. Finding out it’s worth a few hundred thousand or more is a whole different deal. Securing it, insuring it, knowing you could sell it and maybe change your lifestyle, it becomes more serious. It’s no longer a just a prized possession, it’s an asset that need to be managed. Yet it’s still the same item.

To everyone saying the appraisal is low, the appraisers on Antiques Roadshow tend to be VERY conservative. Probably because they are on TV, they are doing a very public appraisal on something very valuable, and their professional reputation is on the line. Better to set low expectations.
The important thing is that the appraiser recognized that this was no ordinary watch, gave him enough detailed information on it and a value that was high enough that he was motivated to sell through a reputable auction house that could properly publicize the sale. Once the right buyers find it, the original estimate doesn't mean much if it's a really special piece, the sky's the limit!
