  • Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre vs. Scarlett 18i20 3rd Generation on drums (no talking)
    Audio-interface-/preamp shootout: Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre vs. Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen.
    Drums (8 channels) were recorded in two consecutive takes with the air feature enabled for the close mics on kick, snare and toms. The snare lost tuning during soundcheck for the second take (Clarett+ 8Pre) but the overall differences betweeen the preamps/converters should still be clearly audible.

    muy buena comparativa, muchas gracias! A mis oidos la Clarett suena más definida, más pulida, con algo más de brillo y claridad, pero curiosamente no noto tanta diferencia en el audio sin procesar. Saludos!

    I actually have the Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen and was planning on updating to the Clarett+ and needed a drum comparison video, YOURS IS THE ONLY ONE ONLINE! THANK YOU!
    Having said that… I still don’t know if I should upgrade. Any suggestions?

      Hi Felix, I'm the guy who made the video. Sound-wise I'd absolutely go for the Clarett+. On the other hand you lose internal talkback and A/B-switching for speakers. And there's only one ADAT port, so you'll be limited to 48 kHz if you want to use an external preamp module with 8 channels. Cheers!

      Sweetwater sells Black Lion standard mod where you send in your 18i20 and Black Lion upgrades the preamps and D/A converters. An option to check out since you already own the 18i20. (I haven't done this, but am interested.)

      The Clarett is definitely the superior product. The pres and the AD/DA converters add a level of clarity the Scarlett can't. If you don't need the preamps then it matters less but if you want clarity then Clarett is the way to go.

    I had a Scarlett 4i4 3rd gen I used as a DAC for output only to convert my piano VST’s to music. It sounded soft compared to my audient id44. I replaced it with the Clarett+ and the sound was much more crisp and more dynamic. Well worth the extra money for me.

    To my ears they conveyed sounds that are very, very similar. Snare seems a little brighter with the Clarett but with some subtle EQ'ing that can replicated using the Scarlett. I am looking for an 8XLR input rig for home and at this point I am leaning towards the Scarlett. I can't really justify paying 40% more for such subtle differences. Of course....as in life...all things are reviewable LOL

    The 18i sounds darker making it sound fuller in the low mids. The Clarett has a little better definition and I think it sounds a bit better but they are very close. I'm about to do a recording of an acoustic guitar, acoustic piano and vocals in a lively room. I think I'll rent the Clarett+.

      Clarett+ and Scarlett are very close. The Clarett+ is a tiny little bit faster than the Scarlett but I doubt that anybody can feel it. We're talking fractions of milliseconds.

    Listened to this on my Bose headphones. I can hear the claret just sounded a bit brighter to me. It’s almost indistinguishable. I think where the claret really would be heard is when your jumping up to expensive mic’s and in headphones when jamming with other people.

    On this recording, the scarlett 18i20 3rd gen generally sounds a little better, but it depends on the input signal settings. But if everything is set to zero, then scarlett sounds a little better, which is nonsense to me.

  • @guylassalle4106

  • @MidnightMiik

    It's so clear how the Scarlett doesn't handle transients as well as the Clarett+.
    I like how you started with the full mix and then broke it down.
    Fantastic shootout!

    Well done! I may upgrade from the 18i20 - but in my world the preamp quality is secondary to the performance, mics and how I mix the tracks in post. My niche is setting up a couple cameras and intercepting the audio signals direct from the mics, keyboard, etc through a splitter. I have no affect on the live sound - that’s up to the front of house person. I just make certain I’m recording fat waveforms on my DAW - then I mix when I get home and add the master to my video clips. Here’s a recent mix: th-cam.com/video/rBhAUNu4BTE/w-d-xo.html

    The toms sounded better to me on the scarlett. The rest of the kit was almost indistinguishable, and I have a decent set of headphones on. It actually wouldn't matter at all in the grand scheme. I could fix anything I didn't like in post. I'm going to save the 1000 bucks and stick with the scarlett.

    Listen how soft a hihat is on Clarett when on Scarlett is quite harsh

  • @Skoora
    @Skoora 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It’s a mute point because Control sucks and you’re using it on the Clarett too. I would be all over a 18i20 to replace my 8i6 but I hated Control so much, I’ll probably get a Motu Ultralite instead.

  • @specimen5847
    @specimen5847 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Amazingly similar yet quite different. Somehow the scarlett sounds a bit more compressed in a way and less bright (don't know if air was on on the clarett though) also the clarett had a bit fuller low end and a bit more snappiness to it but i believe it has bigger dynamic range which might explain that part.
    Quite interesting though. Don't know which i'd like better but the clarett definitely leaves more quality, headroom and clarity to work with than the compressed mid sidey sound of the scarlett.
    Still not a fan of either but made it that much harder to not buy a clarett on my budgett

    I think the difference lies more in the conversion than anything else. Clarett has a better conversion.

    • @propositionjohnston
      @propositionjohnston 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d be extremely surprised if you could hear the difference in the conversion. I don’t think it would be distinguishable to the best golden ears. Conversion these days is extremely good on the cheapest hardware. You would hear subtle nuances in the preamps long before you’d hear the conversion.

      @@felixburton3541 you can compare for yourself. Kick, snare and toms were recorded with air enabled on both interfaces. Overheads and room were recorded with air disabled. The Clarett+ gives you more definition and more "air" (meaning a more open high end) on all channels regardles of the air feature. However there are differences between the Clarett's and the Scarlett's air feature.

    • @mingostarr4892
      @mingostarr4892 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aggiberger8948 Without going in to circuit diagrams (that I can't read anyway..) Focusrite states the difference of using "Air" on Clarett and Red devices, compared to I assume Scarlett, to be an input impedance switch down from 6.2kΩ to 2.2kΩ. With my limited knowledge, wouldn't this deliberately add noise to any microphone that has an output impedance over 220Ω? I guess this is the colouration difference between the two?

    • @mingostarr4892
      @mingostarr4892 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To my ears there is a slightly perceivable difference in timbre, but I can't hear any difference of audio quality over youtube. I haven't A/B'd them in real life, but at nearly double the retail price (sweetwater June 2023) I definitely can't hear double the quality.

    More low endish.

  •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Is there a difference? yes. Not a $500 difference in quality. Not double the quality. And if you know how to Eq, you can 100% make it better using any on the 2 IMHO. Double for me should be amazingly different. Without the reference to compare, you may get the exact same success in real life.
