  • DMXIS is one of my favorite pieces of lighting software, especially for band's and other folks who are just starting out and need to run their show from stage.
    Here is what I wish I knew before I began with DMXIS...

    Hey David, I was wondering if you'd know any possibility to use hardware faders to make the programming faster and easier with dmxis, it's kinda annoying to move every single fader with the mouse, especially when I'm using moving lights..
    I was looking for some simple Midi faderwings, but I really didn't find anything good and cheap and before I spend a lot of money I wanted to make Sure it is compatible with the dmxis and maybe even has midi feedback, do you have any experience with that?

    David, would love to know how to write in a velocity downslope in ProTools MIDI editor. I'd like to be able to fade out a sustained note, so the DMX light fades out over a measure of music.

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would want to trigger the individual channel via the plugin. I know it can be done as I do it in Ableton, but I have no idea how to use ProTools, so I'm not sure what the process there would look like.

    Thank you for all the informative videos, David!! I have an odd question....do you know if DMXIS will run on a chromebook? I need a new laptop and I thought an inexpensive chromebook would be ideal for gigging situations.

    Hi David, I used DMXis for years in High Sierra and now Im buying a M1Pro MacBook Pro with Ventura. Do you know if does work the same box?I Its unbeliable but I didn't´t find this answer in their web. Is Buddy list the new software for the DMXIS? I want to use with MainStage (Logic Pro) software to control the light in my show. Thanks for your video and regards

    Thanks David. I knew most of these, but it never hurts to have someone else mention them. The one I didn't realize was using the XY axis control. Makes perfect sense now that you mention it.
    I'm curious how you use DMXIS. Do you control it from the laptop? Have you gotten into TouchOSC on an ipad for control? If so, I would love to see/hear about how you're using it and how you set it up. This winter I'm redesigning my scenes. After using the ipad for the last year I've learned alot about what works for me and what doesn't.
    Anyway, thanks for all the knowledge you share.

      I personally run DMXIS as a plug-in on logic pro x and I'm running a midi channel that tells DMXIS how to automate the lights through midi data (they run on timing with the music because the tempo data is embedded on the project too!). I also run backing tracks with click (and without for venue). all on one project :D

    • @LearnStageLighting

      For shows that I run DMXIS on, I run it via the Laptop/ 1/4" footswitch. If I need to jump to a different scene, I can do so by clicking on the screen.

    great videos. quick question. I have 3 Qspot 150s, all on different channels to create scenes etc; however, when i double click i.e. Pan or Tilt, only two of the fixtures respond; hence, i end up having to create the scene for the one light that didn't get the signal. Does that make sense? If i put them all on the same channel, they all work fine, this just happens when they are on different channels; hence, trying to figure out what could be going on. thanks again for your videos!

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should be able to work fine each on different channels. Make sure the DMX address on each light matches the channel number in DMXis. Also, if you are playing around with channel masking, you could bring this issue upon yourself.

    Great Video. Thanks. Do you know if I can trigger sequences via midi commands. I currently use Lumiair FX and I like that I can trigger a new sequence or scene when I change the channel on my amp which sends out a specific midi sequence. I don't like that that it crashes a lot and some other quirikinesses. I'm looking for a new solution. Thanks again

    • @LearnStageLighting

      Yes you can. To trigger scenes the MIDI commands have to be on Banks 15 and 16, but yes, you can trigger it with MIDI!

      Yes- the latest version of DMXis offers Art-Net output, which allows you to connect directly to capture over networked DMX - either within the same computer or on a network.

    Can you remove unused DMX channels from the DMXis interface? Judging by this video, it looks like the DMX channels are divided into rigid 32-channel banks: 1-32, 33-64, 65-96, etc.

    Hi! I'm very new to lighting and dmxis. I watched the dmxis training videos to get into it a little. However, I can't find information anywhere about this: When I'm doing changes on the faders inside a preset, it doesn't save them. Meaning, if I open the preset manager and go into another preset or another bank, all the faders are reset. Is this only because I haven't connected my dmxis box yet? I need to prgram a live show for my band. I'd like to get familiar with the controls and do as much as I can in advance, without the lights or the box conected.

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to press "Overwrite" in the preset window after you make your changes. You then get a popup to confirm, and it's saved :)

      Another question, not sure if DMXIS can do this.. If you have odd time signatures in your song, like 5/8 or 7/8, does the oscillator function still work properly? For example, i need a light to flash 5 or 10 times per bar, how do i achieve this with dmxis?

    Hi ! And thanks for this good video. I just bought DMXIS and I'm trying to set up a basic ableton project with my lights. I tried with one light (www.manualslib.com/products/Cameo-Flat-Par-Can-Clpflat1rgb10ir-4176639.html) and it worked. But then I tried to plug another one and ... only the first 1 responded to the parameters change in ableton. So here is the thing : I'm a noob and don't yet understand how to set up my lights' channel for each of them to be recognized by the software (with their own RGB faders, etc). I tried changing channels but nothing worked. I don't really understand how to make my second light to be controlled by for example from the Channel 9 to 11. Hope you'll understand my problem. Any advice about this ? I'm sure it's easy haha

    • @LearnStageLighting
      @LearnStageLighting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first really important step is to get that second light re-addressed to channel 9. Look in your manual under the DMX start address section, and it will tell you how to do it - every light is a little different as to how this works. Then, you'll be able to control it via faders 9-11, assuming it is in a 3-channel mode (again, manual!)
