When they asked where in the world I learned those tricks, I just smile and say a brilliant lady named Leah taught me. 100% of the time, they ask a follow up with, "where can I find this Leah person?" Of course I point them to the youtubes.... keep up the great tips my friend, I am continuing to learn things my Grandfather would have taught me but he passed away while I was a young boy.

    • @j.morrison73
      @j.morrison73 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @sammy J. stone I have to agree with that. many a level that takes a spill will not be accurate. Leah's 'trick' here is a small 'assisted' version of how we set utility poles, with a plumb bob.. As the 'corner mount' or 'line truck' steadies the pole, another worker, standing further back, would hold up a plumb having his pinched fingers at the top of the pole against the sky. When the pole lined up with the string towards the bottom, pole was straight. Repeat from a 45 degree angle from where you started. A final double check and that pole is ready to be filled in.

    • @j.morrison73
      @j.morrison73 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeff Holland LOL, you must be or were, a lineman. The old timers back then always used a brick on the hood. 'Four drops of rain' and we don't work on it. Midstream, we would work in light showers. With power lines involved, we found other preparatory work to do.

      @seejanedrill  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, unfortunately. But I remember when i installed the furnace in my home. It was easier for me to take the specs to a fabrication shop for them to fabricate a plenum. However, for simple tasks associated with duct work, such as driving cleats, you could certainly purchase specialty tools for working with sheet metal. Perhaps you can tell me exactly what you are trying to do?

    • @AngryCornflakes

      Actually i believe i have a bit of a unique issue. I have a basement i want to update, but overhead space is limited and so is money so i figure if i could lay down the ground work of running the ducting for the A/C it'll be more affordable. Plus i could run it in such a way it'd be less of an impact on the overhead space.

    The title here should be: If you have a plumb bob . . .

    • @travispratt6327
      @travispratt6327 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s more for practical reasons, yes technically you don’t even need the speed square, all you’d have to do is make an equilateral triangle with sticks, mark the middle of the bottom stick then put a string on top with a rock hanging. It’s more likely someone who needs to make something level simply forgot their level and instead of driving half an hour or whatever to go get one you can use your speed square and chalk line, very common things to have at any construction site or odd job.

    • @nicholashutchinson40

    • @travispratt6327
      @travispratt6327 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      scott m Yea maybe, there is the plumb bob and a plumb line, the definition is confusing I’ll give you that. Wikipedia says it’s the whole thing though, “DescriptionA plumb bob, or plummet, is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. It is a precursor to the spirit level and used to establish a vertical or horizontal datum.” So it says it’s only a plumb bob when it’s suspended, get rid of the string it’s no longer a plumb bob. Maybe we should call a plumber I think they use them sometimes? A plumber named bob would be best 😛
