    Thanks, Mark, for the video. After careful examination of the knot, it is not a true Bowline Knot. It is more similar to Perfection Knot. However, it is a fast way to make a life saving knot. Happy New Year.

    This is a knot commonly used in flyfishing. It is called a perfection loop. I worked on a towboat on the Tennessee River many years ago and we used for the reasons you mentioned, but I never heard it called by any particular name. I might mention for those who think it is magic, that it is very easy once learned.

  • @colb9916
    @colb9916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    As good & quick as this demo is, with a few tweaks it can be done faster and cleaner.
    By keeping the line underfoot (standing line,, no pun intended) shorter, ( eg. left hand out in front at waist height,) & tight, when you throw the bitter end (loose short line) there is no slack, The bitter end whips around & forms the knot.
    As the loop is passed into the offhand, keeping the line tight underfoot & lifting the left hand, the knot tightens itself .
    Cuts time almost in half or more than having to grab the slack line and pull with both hands to tighten the knot.
    By useing the right foot and left hand to form & tighten the knot, the right hand is free to grab the standing line midway, swing and throw.
    With practice its possible to pick up a line. Form the knot and have it in the air towards MOB (man over board) or pylon etc in around 5 seconds.
    Believe me, seeing that tied loop heading your way within seconds of your head breaking surface, lets you know you can rely on your deckmates.
    I'd suggest ANYONE that spends any time on water learns to tie this knot fast.
    Its literally a lifeline.

    • @VoxEOD
      @VoxEOD ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for this comment. I was skeptical because of how common it is for trolls to seek flaws, but your suggestions about (1) the tension maintained by your foot, (2) the height of the left hand, and (3) the mental preparation for the right hand to throw really helped with practicality.
      Of course I'm referring to the left and right hands as demonstrated, which could be switched for preference.

      You can drink ALL night for free if you take a piece of line into a bar and only show this knot at high speed. Challenge anyone to replicate it in five tries.
      You can do the knot many times and they still will NOT get it. Just be VERY quick and don't show how you twist and rotate your wrists. Make it as fast as possible.
      The hand IS quicker than the eye,
      Once you have had several drinks, you can give them a chance by slowing it down some. They STILL will not get it. Usually.
      Be prepared for anger and frustration!

I'm having difficulties in that many times when I perform it it capsizes into some strange knot or even a slip knot. I'm sure practice makes perfect but my advise is make sure you have a real tugboat bowline at the end!

    Pretty impressive speed, I can barely tie a bowline anyway. An even faster solution is already have a loop tied in a line, get a water toy tow rope, advantage it FLOATS, or use a dock line with a premade loop. People should have a line ready to go just in case of emergency. And really a heaving line to save a person needs to float, most lines sink, what use is that. A line tied to ring buoy that is handy to have ready to go. And some of those cheap ropes rot in sunlight, so get lines that are UV resistant, a pool safety rope blue and white is treated to prevent sun damage. A sun damaged rope turns to powder and will break.

    The knot shape looks same as Angler's loop. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angler%27s_loop

    This is also called (for some reason) a TUGBOAT bowline. It's quick to learn, quick to deploy and bombproof. Great video of how easy it is to 'throw' together. Learning it takes a few tries, but once you easily master it, it'll be a go to knot you'll often use.

    Let me see you do this on a heaving deck, with waves washing over....
    Neat trick, but I don't think many will master it.

    Got it the first couple of tries.....after that it was too inconsistent to be useful unless you have a perfect rope. Moving on

    I was first shown this knot by a recruit, US Marine getting his uniform done while crossing over to the Navy, I was training for service week in the Navy in 1998. I just looked at him with this stupid look on my face. He looked at me and smiled, "You need to see that again?" I was like "Yes, yes I do." He showed it again. His division RDCs, my division RDCs, and myself had to simply chalk it up to "Voodoo."

    I have found the bowline impossible to repeat under duress, so this is great.

    we called it the flying bowline. we never trusted it, preferring to take the extra couple of seconds to tie the more common actual bowline.

    Only one objection to the video might be that standing, walking on or pushing rope into the ground is a very big no no in climbing, rescue and fire service work or in the construction industry. Degrading expensive rope lines by introducing grit and dirt and grinding it into the fibers of the rope is to be always avoided, microscopic tearing and cutting reduces the safety factor designed into the rope. Degraded rope then becomes a life safety issue if used. Don't tread on rope, period.

    I am told that there is a way of tying a bowling around your waist using one hand only if you are in the water and are thrown a line. A friend who was in the merchant navy said this was true but he couldn't remember the technique unfortunately. Not this method, evidently!
