- As a friar and priest, I took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, meaning that there is a lot of things I can't do in this world. Many would see this as throwing my life away, but I can't help but see the opposite.

People tend to measure "success" by the yardsticks of marriage, kids, and wealth, but there's more to life than that sort of success. Life can also be "meaningful" more than "successful" which people sometimes struggle with.
Even success can make you miserable... happiness and fulfilment cannot be found from such things...it's a temporary satisfaction that's mistaken for fulfillment
Become successful is a personnal interest. They've become so successful they tend to forgot their surrounding

People only think something is 'worth' it if you make money or gain reputation from it. If it doesn't make money or make you famous, many think it literally evil.

I really appreciate you. I am Hindu by birth , but follower of Jesus by my free will. I admire the freedom that you have in Christ. On listening to you I truly understand what Jesus meant when He said, " You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free" . Praise the Lord !!
What I think is sad is society making us believe the only way to be happy is to be married and have kids when there are so many other possibilities to be fruitful in this life. There is no one fits all path. 💙

"Life wasted" makes me think of the lady who broke the jar of expensive perfume and used it to serve Jesus.
She was criticized because she "wasted" it. But Jesus said her extravagant offering was a good work.

Not once in my 54 years of being Catholic, including 4 years of Catholic HS, did I ever feel sorry for a Priest for the life he chose. I'm really surprised to hear anyone would even say that to a Priest. I've viewed several of your videos and for me this is one of my favorites. After all that has happened in the last year, I find comfort in your dedication and happiness with your choice to become a Priest. Thank you!

Fr. Casey...I am single and in the 80's while in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament..I became to understand that my prayer life was to be dedicated to Priests and for an increase in vocations. This was something took extremely seriously because I didn't want to break a promise. Decades later my prayers, sufferings are offered for priests and when I see wonderful, holy Priests like you Fr Casey...I pray that in some small way my prayers are helping you and other Priests and through you and others bring many, many souls to Christ. You are in my prayers!

Before I ever met Jesus, God whispered to me through a gentle thought (when I was a preschooler enraptured by the sights at the first wedding I attended), that this was not for me. When I met Christ later, many questions ensued-especially when certain young men were as close to me (as friends) as if we were "meant to be." But always the question was answered the same. So 60 years later, 40 of those being a nurse, 25 of those being an interpreter, 25 years being a teacher at the collegiate level, and 10 volunteer teaching at high school level (and yes, most of the time I was doing 2 or 3 of them at the same time) I must tell you it is worth it! The greatest joy in not having commitments to family or a relationship is the freedom to help others when the needs are present. Staying with a sick friend all night, watching children while parents go to the scene of their teenager's accident, dogsitting the incorrigible pet for a friend on vacation, doing without so others might have... I must tell you life is ample and rich as a singleton in Christ and there are still thousands of ways to help the world- not so WE have a rich life, but so those we help, do.
Is something lost? Yes! Of course! But King David himself said "I'll not give that to God which costs me nothing."
Jim Elliot lost his life taking the gospel to people, but when he was first called, the fear was addressed when he wrote: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."
And Jesus Himself addresses those who are eunuchs-those in His society that were unable to reproduce, therefore not able to be married, that some were born with the condition, some made that way by the actions of men, and some of free will to serve Him and others.
I am a Protestant, but most importantly a sinner saved by grace. For those of you reading this who are not on board with this God-thing, I think a time will come when you must examine more closely. Please don't miss the opportunity.

I have a lot of respect for the life you've chosen father, I've considered religious life myself but it's a major sacrifice and that's a pretty terrifying thing at times. I'm still looking for a wife at the moment but the truth is that you most certainly did not throw your life away, you gave it to God for a higher purpose that is both brave and admirable.
You may want to consider the third order Franciscans (i.e., Secular Franciscans). You can live a life according to St Francis rule for lay people, get married, and raise a family :)
@@mertmolina8312 My aunt is a third order Franciscan, I've definitely thought about it, If I get married I'll definitely look into it more but I don't know if you can easily transition from third order into actually entering religious life so I'd like to keep that option open in case that's what God in store for me.

absolutely Sr Stella, I'm 56yrs old and when I was 6 I had the most amazing teacher back in Australia for Grade One who was a nun and she turned my life around in the most incredible way, this was after enduring a prior year with a lay-teacher that just had a set on me, and remember like yesterday how I dreaded every single day going to kindergarten. Not sure if my parents picked up on it and had a word with the next year's teacher, but this amazing person, Sister Veronica, built back my confidence and made me love school. So here's 5 decades later and I still think of her... cheers.
I'm reading your book "Called: What Happens After Saying Yes to God" and it's really touching, you basically taught me how to pray. My parish is a Franciscan one in Poland. Friars there are as humble and helpful as you. I envy your fraternity.

Probably a few years ago, I would've agreed that you were wasting your life; but that would've said more about my own idols that I was not willing to give up, and when I see others doing it, it feels like oppression when it is actually freedom. I am on the other sphere of this. I’m 37, Married at 22, first child a year later second child 5 years after that. I work to support my family and dropped out of university at 6 months. I often wonder if I had continued at university were I would be now. Then something happens around the world and I thank god that he has given me a good life, a women I love, two children who make me proud everyday and given me a job that I love and friends who I am honoured to have in my life. My life is filled with things god himself has given me and I will cherish them every day.
I am on a different path to you, you have chosen to give your life to god and I love the life god has given me. There is no true path. God may sign post us hear and there but it is up to us to make the journey.
Isn't it beautiful that we have both Marriage and Holy Orders as Sacraments of service? You (and I) are called to bear children for God in Marriage, and Father Casey is called to bear children for God in Holy Orders. By our cooperation with God they are born, and by Father Casey's cooperation with God they are born again. We have answered the call to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and Father Casey has answered the call to go unto all the world and make disciples. None of the two, is a wasted life, it just depends on which state of life God has called you to... Beautiful!

Father, as a protestant minister I do have the blessing of a wife and children. I love them and am very grateful to have them as a part of my life. They support me in my ministry. However, there are times in my ministry, when my role as father and husband has prevented a ministry opportunity. I most naturally at times, put the needs of my personal family ahead of the needs of my universal family. I think that any married member of the clergy who is honest would say the same. I see a benefit to the vows of celibacy for clergy. Thank you for your Kingdom work.
Thank you for your clear presentation. As a protestant Christian, retired pastor and military chaplain I appreciate your desire to serve God. Gregory Palamas (an Orthodox monk in the 13th/14th century) wrote this: "Let not one think, my fellow Christian, that only priests and monks need to pray without ceasing and not laymen No, no; every Christian without exception ought to dwell always in prayer." God has called you to a special ministry and as such blesses you in the way that is most rewarding and uplifting for your life. All Christians are called to a life of sacrifice but each person's sacrifice is different. Thank you for the ministry you have had in my life.

Father Casey, I'm an Anglican priest, and even without the vows of chastity, I experience very similar reactions. I admire your online ministry and your voice. I think people need to understand that "I don't want that" is perhaps a useful vocational insight for themselves, but it is not a way to know a universal truth.
I hope you and your church may one day join the one holy Catholic and apostolic church.

And in it we can get divorced, re-marry, use birth control and welcome homosexuals, homosexual marriage and even clergy for both women and gays. So we are good, and take a pass on reunification with the Roman Catholics.
@John For one, your Catholic Bloody Mary legally ended and dismantled Henry VIII Church of England in 1555 and murdered the COE Bishops by burning them at the stake. The present Church of England was legally established in 1558 by Elizabeth II, a born Protestant. Get your history right. Second, we continue because beyond Henry VIII we established a separation from the Papal Authority and the right of the Christian community to have a self-run church that doesn't sell salvation for a monetary gain with a Bible we can actually read and a mass with a language we actually speak centuries before your Roman Catholic church got around to it. Also a church that worships the Trinity, not the worship of Saints, and a mortal woman. A church that doesn't condemn divorce from bad marriages or forcing women to carry unwanted children by condemning birth control. A Church that also who sees that women and homosexuals are not only welcome in church, but have as much right to the call of clergy as heterosexual men. A few traits you Catholics might want to adopt in joining the 21st century. Maybe then you'll solve your lack of Priests and even curb the pedophiles that do want to put on your collar. Out of curiosity, does your church consider the commands of Jesus in Mark 10:8-9 and Matthew 19:6 to be merely suggestions? Are the words of the Holy Spirit speaking through St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9, and 1 Corinthians 14:34, and 1 Timothy 2:11-12 able to just be disregarded, if they offend you?
Fr. Casey, you have a very deep and rich life. My family is currently in RCIA, we have been believers in Jesus for over 40 years, served in the non denominational church. God has called us home to the Catholic Faith. Our friends are looking at us like we are crazy and first question they ask “are you going become a nun and a priest? To me it’s a complement, because our faith is deepening and has a new meaning. Go’d is using you in answering our questions. Scott and I appreciate you and we will keep you in prayer. God bless you.

Most people waste their lives. You'll also never be a divorced man bankrupt and thrown to the curb, so that's in the plus column. Many men feel like they're thrown their lives away on dreams that weren't fulfilled.

I used to be one of those Catholics who looked at priests and religious with a mixture of admiration, appreciation, an a twinge of sadness even as I thought I might be called to religious life. That changed as I got to know more joyful adult Christians in general and more joyful priests and religious in particular. When two of my friends became Sisters, it seemed like the most natural and wonderful thing in the world for both of them. They were both radiant Christian women before they took vows, but since entering their communities their lives have taken on a depth that is both beautiful and difficult to adequately describe. If any of my kids answer a call to the priesthood or religious life, I will not only be proud *of* them but ecstatic *for* them!

I'm only 18 but I have always seen myself getting married and starting a family. I almost never been without a girlfriend. I hated the thought of not having a family, but I am now seriously discerning the priesthood. I feel as though I am being called. Please pray for me

I normally do not comment. I am an agnostic with a strong dislike for religion (I hope nobody gets offended, it is not my goal), but I think that whoever criticized your life choice is a megalomaniac idiot. Your choices are your choices. I do not obviously share your views, but I really admire your coherence and your will to help according to your believes. Your life is not wasted because you have made up your mind, you know where you stand and you have the guts to act accordingly. Haters insulting people behind their screens are the real waste (regardless of their faith). Snap! I follow this channel to remind myself that reasonable and intelligent people exist with varying levels of religiosity. I'm under no illusions that a convent would have been the safest place for me 100 years ago, and would provide me with the lifestyle I want for myself now, if only I could handle the whole god-is-real thing they seem to be fans of.

As a practicing Catholic at every opportunity, I endeavor to say "thank you" to a priest for the sacrifice that he has made in order to bring the Sacraments into my life and the life of the Church. And at the conclusion of my Confession, I always say "Thank you Father for answering God's call to the priesthood."
After every confession too, I offer a prayer for Priests

I'm a perpetually single protestant clergyperson. I sometimes wonder if I've thrown my life away. But I don't think I would be content doing anything else though.
I'm born and bred catholic, Brazilian at the age of 36, I always believed in Christ and his preaching but as I got older i started questioning Catholicism, however over the past few months I started having some mental anxiety issues and then I started to go back to my faith, I started watching a lot documentaries about christianity and at the same time started to use meditation by buddhism to combine with my prayers which has helped me a lot, hence the importance of faith and good mindset.
Although i feel much more close to my faith now than ever before my dedication to my faith pales compared to the life priests have chosen to live by God's way.
I 100% admire them, they are the reason why faith is something we can't question because it takes something really special for a human being to leave all the distraction we have on our day to day to live a life which is as close as Jesus's was. Amen to that!

I don't think so Fr. Casey! As a catholic, I don't think any life is wasted. Living a vocation, living as the Love (that is, God) commands you, seems to me the best way to live. And God is always with us and while we live with that in mind, that's an awesome life.
I’m a Presbyterian who loves the idea of marriage and family...
But I have the utmost respect for my monastic brothers. It’s not an easy life but serving the Lord Jesus Christ is never a waste whether one is married or celibate. I appreciate this channel. I love learning more and more about Catholic theology despite my being a Protestant.
I also would not want to sacrifice having that kind of family life. Romantic relationship can be really fulfilling and I can only imagine how fullfilling having kids might be! I think I would want to be a mom someday. I certainly would not give up that option!

Back in high school (I studied in a Capuchin-run school), my classmates and I met a priest who had it all: good looks, wealth, and a great career - and he gave those all up to become a priest (yes, a Franciscan). We asked him what made him decide to become a priest. He was at the top of the world, had money, and was a "chick magnet." He said that despite all his possessions, he felt empty deep inside. He felt that there was something missing inside him. As a joke, he attended a discernment seminar for people considering the priesthood. There, he felt a certain fullness and joy that he kept returning until he finally decided to become a priest. He said he never regretted his decision and his "worst days" were better than what he thought we his "best days" then. He also said that as a result of his decision, he got to have "hundreds" of children - some even older than he. He also had "dozens" of "moms" and "dads" as well. He did not feel the "anguish" of celibacy because he was too busy praying and helping the community. He told us that the life of a priest is hard, but the joy of being free to love, serve, and give oneself up to people in the Name of God is more than enough to keep him going. 🙂

I think it's crazy for people to tell another person they're doing their life wrong when that person is happy and what they are doing you obviously love being a friar so I say you're doing exactly what you need to be doing
I'm fond of the phrase "the price of admission". All of us have some sort price of admission - for me, the price of admission of being married is accepting and even celebrating those things that make living with my beloved a challenge. I wouldn't change it for the world. I'm happy in my life and I'm really glad you are happy in yours.
I'm glad I clicked on this video. I've been running behind success all my life. Eventhough at one point I realised that success does not give any satisfaction or meaning to my life, I wasn't able to find out what else would give satisfaction or meaning to my life. Now I think the answer is clear. It is sacrifice. I remember hearing a quote of Mother Teresa - "God did not call me to be successful, but to be sacrificial". I didn't understand it back then. But now I understand. My life motto used to be, "To be successful wherever I go". But from now on I think it will be, "To be sacrificial wherever I go". Thank you Fr. Casey !!!
I must admit He really does have a meaning full life! I'm married with a family but at time I find my self asking there's got to be more than this. A more meaningful life I mean. Marriage is great well depends whom you ask but it does come with a lot of responsibility and pressure at times. I may even add it hinders you from getting even closer to got at times due to time and responsibility. You go on young priest/father! I see nothing wrong with your meaning full life.

Hi Father Casey! Thanks for your videos! They've helped me a lot these past weeks.
I've been told these things many times as well especially when people heard I started living in chastity. If only they knew the joy of devoting one's whole life to God in the religious life or in priesthood. I always felt a call to do it but I can't because of my sexual orientation and how I lived it in the past. I've spent some time these years wishing things would've been different, asking God how I didn't get to know him before I decided to live my life the way I did and I wanted the fire inside me to stop burning, but as time went on I realized that I could keep this fire burning in my heart and give it a meaning by offering my life to God in the world by humbly helping announce Jesus through works of mercy and love.
Please pray for me so I can keep walking this path with joy.

I grew up with priests and brothers all around me. Never have I felt sorry for them or you. I actually feel jealous at times. You get to touch people spiritually in a way others can't. God bless you. I pray for you everyday.

I'm honestly split. Some days I'd love to give my life to God as a nun but I have doubts about the sacrifices. Some days I would like to get married and have children but I think of all the stress and responsibility of being a wife and mother. Everything comes at a price
yeah, I'm split too, it's a responsibility to have children and also when I see all these divorced people saying "I wasted my life with X person, I regret ever knowing them" then I'm like damn, that must be terrible, and divorce rates are going up, how can I know if my marriage will last? Christ's love is eternal, maybe I should just embrace it?

I'm a convert to Orthodox Christianity. My godfather is a monastic and is a chanter in our Church. I see the joy in his eyes as he memorizes the Liturgy and the chants for vespers. I struggle so hard with maintaining a constant prayer life (and always have), but there is no doubt that your life is joyous. Your only concern is to please our Lord. What a joy that is!

@@papay100 Almost all of the historically significant sites related to the life and teachings of our Lord are owned by the Franciscans. They trace back their presence in the Holy Land to 1217 when St. Francis came to visit. Just to name a few in Jerusalem only: Dominus Flevit, Gethsemane, Flagelation monastery (1st &2nd stations of the Via Delorosa), Stations V and VII, and a big monastery in the magnificent church of the Holy Sepulchre which is shared among three big denominations (OFM on behalf of Latins, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox) and three lesser denominations (Syrian Orthodox ,Copts and Ethiopians). The Custody of the Holy Land is also located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City in the 16th century Saint Savior monastery. Many more beautiful churches are located on very important sites in the Galilee like the church built over the house of St. Peter’s mother-in-law at Capernaum (by Franciscans) and the list is long.

I was raised and groomed against Xian and your higher power but since December I have been on a journey that you have been a big part of. Because of TH-cam I can learn about your religion and beliefs. I won't share too much but, I really appreciate what you do. I am 29 and trying to leave a religion and situation that I have been raised in. Even though I get punished for my curiosity, there's a hope in your eyes and so many other xians eyes. If I don’t make it out of my situation, please know that because of you and other's, at least I know that hope exists. Please don't let others get you down... you are a big part of why I am trying to leave my personal situation. You are precious. Don't give up.

I'm a protestant and I think the vows the Franciscans take are beautiful! If I had something similar I'd strongly consider joining. Devoting your entire life to the work of God is truly amazing and admirable. I'd even go so far as to say that those vows, in a sense free someone more than what the world considers "freedom". On the words of Jesus : For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it Matthew 16:25
Im not religious. I dont feel sad for you.. Im jealous of you. I would love to dedicate my life to helping and loving people in the ways you described... These sacrifices are chump change for such a beautiful thing.. I dont know how i feel right now.

Father Casey, you've nearly brought me to tears with the beauty of your devotion and dedication. As a single Protestant woman studying theology with the hopes of becoming an apologist, there have been times I've wondered if I'm doing the right thing by pursuing ministry as a vocation when there are many options that are more financially "safe". But then I realize - what better use of life is there than leading others to God? Even though I don't know or understand many Catholic practices and traditions, watching you motivates and encourages me in a way I can't explain.
It's like I read in one of my classes recently: so many people look at Christianity and see what we "can't" do - the fact we can't eat from the one tree - but they overlook all the other trees God has given us to freely and safely take from. You have the freedom to not live a life chasing the fleeting pleasures of this world, and instead set your sights on what is eternal. That, I believe, is the best possible use of a life. I hear people say this about Christian monastics a lot. But why do I never hear people make this criticism about Buddhist monks? Curious, isn't it?
Some schools of buddhism teach the only way to reach enlightenment/nirvana is through monasticism.
