Exploring Dead Games That Were Supposed To "Kill" Battlefield

  • For over two decades, Battlefield has been the king of large-scale multiplayer warfare. Over the years countless games have risen, promising to dethrone Battlefield, claiming they could do it better. But in the end, they all stumbled.
    Thanks to ‪@jackfrags‬ for some of the gameplay clips.

      I still play it and it still has a dedicated fan base with some new players. I have about 1400hours in that game and I love it. Since BF went down the hill this is the only game that managed to scratch the itch. They have a new development team as the IP and game was sold to a new studio. I always find games during the peak hours even if there are just 300 people playing it.

    WW3 honestly should never have had such a short TTK or manual leaning.
    It’s the battlebit issue-all of these battlefield competitors frontload their games with super accurate weapons, fast TTK and other combat systems borrowed from mil sim games and then get surprised that nobody can stay alive long enough for a combat flow to form.

      The BF killer to generic Milsim pipeline should really be studied
      If anything BF becoming casual is what made it take off with BF3. BF1 is the last great game and it was super casual that few players even touched BFV since.

    • @Acheron.426
      @Acheron.426 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Totally agree. TTK has just gotten shorter and shorter over the years. It's just a question of who sees who first now and there's no time to react. And what makes it worse is most games also have a pretty bad mismatch between TTK and TTD. Look at Delta Force.

      @histhoryk2648 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I often see that games that go into photorealistic milsim die as soon as they get released or do not provide any significant interest
      I just wonder if these studios are blind to see patterns or they are just oblivious to notice their mistakes
      Short TTK with big areas and lack of contrast between the player and environment is just basically a recipe for a disaster. Adding to that going for photorealism is just a barrier for most people who are not using the newest hardware (which is overpriced crap anyway), considering that games from 10 years ago can run on potatoes from current perspective

    Older battlefield games are the biggest competition for a new battlefield release. Still plenty of people who never moved away from whichever of 3, 4, 1 or V they preferred. I stuck with 4 until V came out. Bought 1 and 2042 obviously but less than 100 hours in each. Shit happens, they aren't all going to work for everyone. Fingers crossed the next one is good. If not, definitely giving '83 a shot. Rising Storm 2 was always on my radar but never had anyone to play with, I'll give those devs a chance.

      I would *STILL* be playing BF4 if it weren't for the *very last* patch they implemented before dropping support.
      The patch that increased spread or (Spread Increase Per Second aka SIPS). They made every single attachment increase your SIPS which made attachments like the angled grip useless because the increase in SIPS from the attachment completely nullified any accuracy you would have gotten from equipping it.
      BF3 and BF4 were fantastic. You could kill at long range with ARs but only by tap firing - which made the ttk take longer because otherwise the recoil doesn't allow you to land shots. If you're close you didn't have to tapfire. If you moved from cover to cover, tapfire could wear you down but not instantly beam you.

    A perfect battle field game would have a map editor. This is really the failing of most modern AAA games - they completely shut out community generated content. It's just fill the battle pass, play the same maps, buy the skins, then repeat on the next title. There is no chance for players to create what they want to play and teach the devs what they're looking for. They sort of leaned that direction in BF6 with the custom games and nods they made. But how empty of character the base game was in front of it almost made it seem like they were saying "we don't know what you want, show us what it is so we can put it in BF7." Even the reveal trailer was basically, "Haha, look at all the fun times we've had in the past - come recreate them here!" instead of "Here is our identity," and then in later promotions make nods to the community over the years. There is a reason that titles far older than the current AAA titles sport players in the 10s of thousands.
    More fragile vehicles would help a lot as well. People constantly talk about the magic of Bad Company 2 and how even EA didn't understand what made it so great. The careful craftsmanship focusing on infantry combat, with a combined arms accent, on absolutely amazing maps, is what really sold it.

      Only thing that is keeping Halo Infinite alive atm is it's community and Forge. I believe a map editor even in a mild form would still be a great addition to BF. So many times I just wanted to be able to adjust the capture zones for conquest or Rush and see how that played.

I remember when the game came out, everyone was over hyping it, saying it was better than Battlefield and whatnot, now where are these people? The game barely has 1000 concurrent players, it's completely dead... The developers grabbed that sweet sweet attention grabbing crash and dipped, nothing new but it's entirely our fault. We're the ones who made the game a success to prove a point to EA and DICE in the first place. not because the game was good by itself. I said before multiple times, we only played that crap because we had a Battlefield itch that nothing else could scratch. Nothing can kill Battlefield other than Battlefield itself.

      Ignoring the fact battlefield 2042 feels absolutely horseshit with all infantry weapons feeling like air soft guns with no recoil or feedback, or that battle bit far outperformed it in terms of destruction and vehicle to AT-infantry balance which made playing as a tank hunter actually rewarding and interesting and made not instalocking vehicles whenever available and instead choosing to play infantry actually fun and viable, not to mention the much wider array of weapons which battlefield lacked. there hasn't been proper battle rifles in a battlefield game since hardline but in battlebit take your pick, the FAL was my favourite gun in the entire game, the recoil was monstrous but if you could control it you were rewarded with the fastest TTK in the game. Yea the scar H is in 2042 but in battlebit they actually feel like a separate weapon class and not just a slightly higher damage lower rof assault rifle with no noticeable recoil or sound or just general punch difference. unless your a vehicle whore or someone who likes playing with lazerbeams or airsoft instead of guns with actual feedback which imo makes them 20x more fun to use bf2042 is a straight downgrade
      Ofc that's ignoring all the fantastic building options, the ability to drag bodies and much more in depth healing/revival and armour/armour customization mechanics, and ofcourse the drastically more in depth weapon customization which let you build super specific weapons too your liking, while still managing to keep most guns pretty comfortably viable and not feel all the same bc of the fantastic sound design and again recoil function.
      if your claiming its crap and 2042 is better your either tweaking, like playing boring slop, cant control recoil, or meatride graphics as important for gameplay experience and wont except anything less than attempted photorealism

Everyone at the time the game released was itching to have that Battlefield itch scratched off and so the game had massive initial success. It was never a game that was meant to retain its playerbase or take itself seriously , it was just a fabrication directed towards the Battlefield playerbase. People were so obsessed and biased with trying to make a point to EA and DICE, they were being hypocrites and contradicting themselves especially since both games shared similar flaws, but Battlebit was never supposed to even be comparable to Battlefield because it threw in milsim mechanics into the mix. I think the BF games might experience the same thing some titles like Diablo 2 do. A lot of players remember the "good old days" and long for the feeling they had back then. And some of those good old games are still fine, but they don't exactly hold up to modern gaming standards in a lot of ways. So I think there's a sweet spot of delivering that old school feeling and keeping a game's identity while making the game feel modern and polished at the same time, which is really hard to nail, though.

    The issue is that games today are just overhyped way too fast by their communities and developers actively push the battlefield/cod/cs killer narrative.
    All these genre defining titles saw a gradual increase in popularity which gave the devs time to collect feedback and find their niche.
    If a game recieves too much attention in a short period of time people will just burn themselves out within a matter of weeks.
    The only game i could see giving battlefield a run for its money in the next decade would be Arma 4 if they support their modding community.
    This series already has a loyal playerbase which would prevent it from fading into obscurity after the initial hype and its mechanics are so far above everything else that it wouldnt just be another clone that acts as a placeholder for the next BF game

      In essence what i imagine is a game that starts its life similar to DayZ back in the arma 2 days (a community made mod where the mechanics are adjusted to cater towards a different type of playerbase which eventually gets its own standalone game)

    But when COD tries to do Battlefield, they can’t even come close to the level that Battlefield does.
    Battlefield is simply the best, and even their bad releases are better than most of their competitors.

    • @NonZenze
      @NonZenze 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely nailed it!
      That especially becomes clear when COD tries to do WW2, what an utter failure that has been. The heydays of COD 1 & 2 will sadly never come again, partially because COD can't do 'realistic' anymore, and
      they just can't do vehicles, at all.
      Meanwhile, DICE have perfected land, sea and air in all shapes.

      Absolutely. All of the armchair commentary from people that think they know anything about game development is exceedingly tiresome. The '2042 crisis' is whiny kids and Dice giving in to them, which is why your YT'ers won't be clear about it. 128 players came with compromises in level details, and that gave the haters something to cling on to. It was an experiment, but people wasn't ready to give it a chance.

    The next dead game: Delta Force. A/D is a mix of normal "CQ" and close combat maps, they need to separate it from each other. King of the hill makes no sense on pipe-style maps like Shafted, Knife's Edge, etc. - they need to separate it... SMG45 is still king and a lot of other weapons need to be buffed to get viable or the SMG45 needs a nerf. Like a lot of SMGs would need more drop off, to be more realistic and to make it a need for medics, recons etc. to choose an AR on more open maps... Etc.etc.
    I'm only playing Delta Force, because there isn't anything out there, that fits my "needs". Delta Force will not kill Battlefield. It lacks of enough maps, it lacks of options for players to change sides, squads, etc. - an option for players to favour attacker or defender side, to make matchmaking not sucking because you have to play three rounds of defender on the same map (I had it being defender on Knife's Edge three times in a row, and if you quit, you get merit points taken off... not very motivating, but understandable). Shorttest round I had was 9 minutes on Trainwreck as a defender, my team did not nothing, I was the best player on the server still but got merit points taken off - THAT is not motviating to come back...)
