Building the Cheapest Possible Garden Railroad with Christmas Tree Trains!

  • I built a big outdoor garden railway for less than $100! It's made from a bunch of 1980s holiday trains, the kind that you can find at a thrift store for $5 or so. They run on AA batteries so there's no need for power or fancy wiring. The downside is I can't leave them in the yard forever, as the plastic probably isn't UV resistant, but it's sure fun while it's set up! This layout was two loops. One goes around our homemade garden pond with the inverted aquarium so the fish can watch the train. The other loop goes out into the garden and back. Getting everything to work was a bit of trial and error, so there are some fun crashes and bloopers towards the end!
    Check out the POV "cab-view" tour of the entire layout here:

    I took the same route after years of procrastination and waiting for the money to be there. Took the plunge by investing in good LGB track but saved on trains for now by finding used and "toy" quality. After a lot of sweat-equity in the backyard I'm having fun running them daily!

    Let me give you all a nice explanation on this topic. You all out there must be from USA or Europe who are commenting on this train set video. Its God whom you can thank that you all can afford electric branded train sets and the poor countries who cannot afford a electric set they buy the cheap plastic ones. If you are human enough and have humanity in your blood never ever make fun out of this. This brother who made this video I give my respect and salute him for making this layout extremely attractive despite being a battery operated set. Not all children are blessed like the Western kids whose parents can afford Mini Trix, Pico,Fleischmann, Bachmann, etc etc. I am a railroad fan not so expert like you guys but I make my own HO stuff.
    Hope you agree with my opinion if you are human enough. Thanks for listening. Happy Railroading.

    Bigger than HO and smaller than O, puts it close to S-Gauge.

    From what I learned you can actually purchase the cheap new bright G. scale trains When I set up my layout outside And left it for a few years the track sees no damage a little bit of color fade but nothing is far is cracking

      @saveitforparts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've thought about the plastic G-scale track but I already had a ton of this maybe-S-scale stuff. I do have some metal G-scale track that will go in the garden eventually, I just have to find time for it!

    • @chasesrailwaylinesrr6447
      @chasesrailwaylinesrr6447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saveitforparts Ok just keep in mind if you do put metal track outside you might have to clean it very once in a while with plastic track you don't have to deal with dirty rails

  • @rohlicek3884
    @rohlicek3884 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    to be fair, when you customize these trains to look more ´´normal´´ they can be a good garden railway if you dont live where is like 45 celcius outside on the sun so the track wont melt

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going to install them underground next, no pesky sunlight to worry about!

    Nice! There Are so Many scales. Me, A big Train Fan has also a lot of those trains they Are very simple. I some times take them apart and color them and tune them with better Motors. Very cool! Greetings From Germany

    I remember having one of these sets as a kid! It wasn't in great shape, and I remember the track coming apart constantly, but I had fun with it. Now that they're so cheap, even though I have much better model trains, I kinda want to buy one and see if it can be painted and detailed to look somewhat realistic.

    • @saveitforparts
      @saveitforparts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're a fun low-stakes way to experiment when you don't want to get "real" model trains dirty or broken! I'll be installing them through the walls and ceiling of my underground bar eventually!

      I've been buying sets every time I see a cheap one at a thrift store or garage sale. The company made a couple versions that are all compatible (basically the same set with different stickers on the train and station). It took me a few years to get this much track together!

  • @TheFrogfeeder
    @TheFrogfeeder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love this idea. I wanted to do it too... but the train set I got has track that is only compatible with itself. And the set is like 25 years old and not made anymore. I like the train tho. It’s a Kirkland Signature set, has a cool little working waterfall and some scenery. Can you measure the track from those set you have for me please? My stuff is 1+1/8 inches. If that track you have is the same, I can finally expand cause I see those sets on craigslist. I just don’t want to waste money trying to find out. Why this company ever made such track is beyond me... but the rest of the set is really nice. Got it for 40$, once in a while I see it on eBay for ~300$.

    Surely, at some point, a pair of furry, four legged, curious hobos tried to board the train. Which could only be properly defended with miniature plastic sledgehammers... RIP Lee Marvin

      There was one of those big furry caterpillars exploring the train at one point, unfortunately it didn't like actually moving, so it just curled up and rolled away when I tried to film it!

      These haven't been sold since the 1990s, they went by a variety of names such as "Dickensville Express", "Wintersville Express", etc. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay, but there are other companies making cheap plastic train toys that are similar. Not all of them are great quality, I have a review video of Daron toy trains coming up (spoiler: they aren't great).
