Father fish actually said a well cycled tank, a well seasoned tank, and a heavily planted tank with a proper substrate can support itself. Our water parameters are not the same as his, even if you live next door to him. It also depends what kind of fish you have and how many fish you have and tank size, what you feed your fish and how you feed them etc. Also, he said there are times that you will have to do water changes. In my opinion, his videos are geared to a little more experienced fishkeepers who can understand everything he is saying. Love you John and Lisa.

I think many hobbyists misunderstood the concept behind no water change that's why having videos that clarify things is very important to avoid fatal mistakes. It's not about going against what someone says rather understanding things based on the right context.

I’m with you on this one John. I thought the video was very well done and there was nothing lost in translation. Even as a fish mom who has fully planted tanks, I’m too paranoid not to do water changes. It’s cool that some don’t have to do them but it’s true it’s not for everyone. Plain and simple, that’s all it is. People not listening to each other causes so many problems nowadays. No one listens anymore it seems.

I listen to my test strips. If they say change water I do. If the test says things are fine, why waste precious time and water? The compulsive water schedule doesn't work with houseplants either. You need to stick your finger in the dirt, or some other test with them, too.

  • @wandererscott
    @wandererscott ปีที่แล้ว +15

There are as many styles of fish keeping as there are fish keepers! To be fair the title of the video is "Stop Changing Your Water!" A better title might have been " Water Changes: How Much, How Often." I completely agree with your opinion on natural tanks. I specialize in VERY overstocked nano tanks. I do this by using a lot of plants, especially floating plants, and by making sure I have as much bio media as I can cram into the filter system. However, because they are over stocked I also do 20% weekly water changes. This is a whole big discussion that should be had in a much more useful manner! What are the benefits of: bio media, leaves and cones, water changes, inverts, mud... I could go on. I would welcome long form video discussions, as opposed to, video wars!😊 ( Posted on Father Fish's video as well)

This is the very reason i made a half hour video on "the problems and risks of filterless tanks". Im glad someone like you with a bigger audience and reach, telling people to pump the breaks and do their research and learn whats going on, before pulling the plug.
Before i made the video responding to my own videos ( i mean i have videos on blackwater, co2 high filter tanks, and sponge filter tanks...theyre all great! )
I was shocked by how many people think a non-planted, cichlid tank, packed to the brim with fish and message me "why did my tank crash?". People need to just know that you can create the about 10 different types of tanks but they all require research and planning and HUGE limitations.

Im planning to do a tank with the father fish method, so I'm subbed to him but I do recognize that the amount of people who have good fish tanks is already small, while having self sustaining ecosystems on their tanks is waaaaay more smaller. As an aquarist of many years, I'm always looking for the lazy ways to keep my fish. I love my fish, but sometimes my work hours don't allow me time to do water changes as often as I would like. However, I also know that it has to be done correctly. It just does, or everything will die. I follow your channel because I am, in fact, not a know it all. There are new things coming out. There are old things I didn't think were a good thing that actually were. I get my information from more than one source by consensus. If you're not open to learning new things daily, where does that leave you in life? It's fine to have your own opinion. It's fine to raise awareness. It's fine. You do not need to feel guilty. Just because something works for me does not mean it will work for you. There are just too many factors to take into account that will set anyone up for failure. This is also America, where we have freedom of speech. I'm a veteran. I fought for that right, and I will not give that right up, nor will I apologize for it. I'm really over the fact that people get offended over literally EVERYTHING. You can, in fact, disagree and still continue to be friends. If you can't, were they really your friends in the first place? I keep my circle small by my choice. It is what it is. It's over. It's done. Move on and continue what y'all do because there's some really great fish keepers out there that do things completely differently. That is okay! Have a wonderful day, John. Don't stress. I am glad you pointed out the facts and made sure people know that it takes a LOT to have an aquarium that is little maintenance. It is certainly NOT for everyone!

I came across your channel when I first started and father fishes channel several years later. If that had been reversed all my fish would be dead. Not because of laziness but because how me being a beginner had my tank setup. I was given a tank from my brother who was lazy and was going to get rid of all of his fish via the porcelain highway. He only had rocks and plastic plants. If I heard that taking water out was bad for the ecosystem I wouldn’t have done water changes and all would be dead. All channels offer different perspectives for different aspects of fish keeping. It’s like a channel for how to raise a toddler and a channel on raising teenagers. Each aspect of those are totally different but some areas crossover. Keep doing what you’re doing because of your channel my fish are happy and I have MTS lol

But it's very heavily planted, has pretty light stocking, and I'm testing the water every few days to make sure it's still stable. I'm also going to have a newborn within a couple weeks. Prepared for this so I won't have to be fiddling with it a ton the first few weeks with my baby. I absolutely would not say this type of tank is for everyone. I try. Y best to run my tanks in a lazy fashion...so when I go on vacation...I don't have to rely on anyone! ... except for my goldfish...they just need water changes.

Hello John, in your previous video, you nailed the bullseye. Most aquariums are starter sets with plastic plants and not a one real plant. IT is these tanks that NEED water changes at least on a weekly basis.
I myself am GUILTY of this. I loaded my 65 gallon up with real plants and actually got lazy and stopped doing water changes. Over time I started seeing some of my fish appear to not feeling well, and I was getting suspicious.
Sure enough, PH dropped around 6.0, and I went and got a new Nitrate test kit. Sure enough, OFF THE CHARTS!
I have since instituted weekly water changes once again, my fish are looking healthy and vibrant too.
I am guilty of expecting my plants to do something they weren't.....Keeping up with the nitrate load.
John and Lisa, keep up the good work, most of us do appreciate everything you both do for us.

I do not condone big box store methods nor water changes at this time in my life. Took me most of my life to realize the tanks needs to be natural setup to succeed. Recently started applying use of floating fast growing plants and emerse house plants, with strong lighting, in my 120g way overstocked African Cichlid tank (my dominate yellow labs just keep breeding!). The tank has balanced in a way that even surprised me. I'm a true believer. Bulk Reef Supply refugium video (saltwater based) results even surprised them by the effectiveness of algae growth in the sump or even a hang in the back. Better than filter socks or protein skimmers! I concur that Cichlid keepers can use this method to really help with excess nutrients/ammonia, phosphates and nitrates. Without serious application of plants and algae you better change that water for sure!!! Let us all enjoy diversity based on truth. Love all of the tubers mentioned in your and the other channels. Sorry there are hurt feelings and vindictive viewers. Never needed in this great hobby. Thanks for laying out your view point as concisely as possible John. I've been keeping fish over 55yrs now. Plenty of drama in my experience trying to do my best and learn the most I can about these wonderful creatures and wonderful aquaworlds. PS I hated the "elevator" scene too.

My 10 gal guppy tank-leans more to Father Fish, because tank can support them healthily. My 50 gal with 10” Fancy Goldfish-😱😱water changes and less plants! In process presently of setting up a 90! Big step up for this disabled 70 yr old senior 😵‍💫. It’s upsizing for my Orandas. Know what? I’m going to TRY something new. Don’t these fish thrive in mud bottomed ponds? I’m going to try Father Fishes substrate idea, but sure wouldn’t give up on water changes. Until then I seek your advice and expertise. I’m not a fish keeper. I’m a horse keeper. But I had 2 tanks in the past and now I know more about my mistakes thanks to information I learned from you. Don’t worry I didn’t kill all of the fish, I bagged them up and took them to a local fish shop to re home. Green barbs, tiger barbs, and a few others. But I did lose some and now I know why. When I can restart a tank I will be much better at it for one reason that you taught me: I know what I want. I watched your centerpiece fish video and what I could put with it. I always loved angel fish but I didn’t understand them and after I lost my second one I gave up on them. You taught me that I had them in a tank too small and with too many other fish even if they were compatible. I had a canister filter on my last tank and thanks to you I understand that mistake too. I don’t know who these people are, Father Fish? Who’s that? I’m not the only one.

Theme tanks. Natural tanks. No water change tanks. And regular water change tanks. Filterless tanks. Over the top filters. Canister filters. Bio media. Carbon. Salt. so many options to keep a tank healthy. Preference is what we keep. I change my water about every 6 months. Most of my tanks are over 55 gals. 7 to be exact. 3 are exatly 55gal. 3x 10 gal I have a total of 15 tanks 13 are keeping fish.

I have a 40 gallon tub stocked with cherry shrimp and white clouds, no heater - its on the ground so the tub stays at around 65-70 degrees, 6 hours of light a day, I feed it twice a week, dirted with a cap, planted up with val, sag, and guppy grass. outside of needing to drain it to move it, I haven't needed to water change it in over 2 years.
But like nothing changes in it, the water temp is so low, and I feed it so little that they just exist.
I had/have some jack Dempsey babies that I keep at around 68-73, feed them 3 times a week and they've grow maybe an inch over the course of a year. Its crazy overstocked at about 40 of them in a 40 gallon tub, and I haven't needed to change the water yet, though I do have algae in it.
On the other hand I have an electric blue jack dempsey breeding with a blue gene jack dempsey that I keep at 78, feed twice a day and do a 33% water change once a week. I also have a 20 gallon custom Low boy with crypts, buce, and val that I run CO2 on, dose with ferts, and do a 50% water change once a week.
No water changes forces you to keep fish in a certain way, and in many circumstances that can work, but with water changes, there are a lot more options and it is a lot more forgiving.
IMO, making water changing easier, that is the real key, so if you do need to water change, its a snap, and if you don't, even better.

Father fish is right…..if you have full knowledge of fish and aquarium ecosystem.
But if you are a beginner…..it will probably not work out
    I have a 150 gallon fish tank….with an arowana and African Cichlids….and I don’t do water changes
My brown algae growing….gets rid of all my nitrites etc
The secret is balancing the amount of food you feed…if water gets cloudy…don’t feed until….water is crystal clear again
You need at least 2 inches of gravel or substrate….for the bacteria
I haven’t changed my water for 3 years
The algae can work ….instead of plants
