I would like to point out that, although people want to help the poor countries out, but No Government wants to help others for no reason. Companies are there for profit
*don't expect to get out of poverty if you don't allow development, but as time goes on it's becoming clearer to me that maybe a western model of society may not be appropriate for many places in Africa*
Thanks for this insight. poor countries need to be helped out of poverty without destroying any more rainforests. Its up to wealthy countries to ptomote other firms of wealth creation, or in the least to give them money to preserve the world's remaining forests, as norway does to (I think) malaysia.
"Large-scale business coming into Africa is automatically labelled in some quarters as being negative and there to exploit rather than to actually do something positive; and we feel that we're trying to do a bit of both."
That's due to the historical context. Western companies have ALWAYS gone to Africa to plunder, exploit and leave with all of the rewards. That's why Africans are wary of big businesses (ESPECIALLY companies from the West). China has done a great job on changing that narrative though, they've gone there with the outlook of making a profit, but also ensuring the countries where they go to also stand to gain, while western companies have in the past always gone there with a zero-sum strategy where they reap all of the rewards and pay as little tax as possible.
