      HAHA!!.You never mentioned how many amps it puts out at 120 volts AC,it lights up a 100 watt light bulb,so what??.
      It takes just under 1 amp to light the 100 watt light bulb at 120 volts.
      Volts × amps=watts

    The battery is powering what is called the "exciter coil". When used in your car, when you turn the ignition key to the START position, the key switch connects the battery to this coil. Once the car motor is running and you return the key to the RUN position, the exciter coil is then powered by a voltage sensor in the rectifier/regulator that was removed in the video. Since a car's engine will vary in RPM as you are driving, a constant output voltage of 13.8 volts is maintained by the voltage sensor regulator by adjusting the voltage to the exciter coil. As the engine turns faster the voltage is reduce, and vice versa. As a reliable, stationary home generator, a speed control or governor on the drive motor would be necessary so the output would maintain a fixed hertz rate. For powering light bulbs hertz rate is not so critical but for AC motors and electronics it is. This is a three phase alternator. If you want to use the other outputs in combination, you definitely need to learn why three phase is different from normal home A.C.

    Back in the 1960's (Yes, I'm old as dirt) They had a kit which, by throwing a switch mounted under the hood (bonnet) of one's truck (lorry) or car, you could bypass the alternator wiring and obtain higher voltage to run power tools. It was a similar setup.

    A kit was sold in the 70's that you wired into your alternator while mounted in your car.
    It consisted of a multi pole switch and and 3 110 volt outlets.
    One for each phase.
    The battery in the car would not charge while in 110 mode, but provided the field voltage.

    An alternator generates a.c.(alternating current) that is why it is called an alternator instead of a regular generator which produces d.c.(direct current). A rectifier acts on that a.c. like a check valve works on pressurized fluids or gases and only let's the current flow one direction Instead of alternating a certain frequency (hertz). I'm a fabricator/heavy equipment repairman by trade but when I was 22 I worked for a few months as an electric motor/alternator/generator /air compressor/small gearbox mechanic

    It's very simple, just bypass the diodes and control the rpm to make 120 volts off 2 of the leads or youse all 3 leads and get 220 out of it but be careful it is a dangerous thing to play with just be careful it is unregulated AC current

    years ago after a hurricane i built a gen with a 5 hp honda,a few pullies n belts 2:1 reduction and a alt from a 1986 nissan d21 pickup.motor at idle put out 78-80 volts from the nissan alt,half throttle gave me 105 volts.i had a dc to ac converter lying around that helped.86 nissan alt has no built in voltage regulator.not saying its a better alternative to your method.....just mentioning,cuz your vid reminded me of what i had done 20 years ago.it may take less mods to get the job done.
    i ran that setup for 6 days,15 hours a day with no issues and only using 1.5 gal gas per day.i was able to run a full size house fridge,tv,microwave and the alt was warm to the touch.later i added a 12v mower battery,and a trickle charger that feed off the alt to charge the battery,and added a car electric radiator fan to keep the alt and converter cool.just add gas,once fired up it was a self contained unit.i did however had to excite the alt on startup before it would make voltage on its own.

    No offense or anything but these have been around for decades. It's easy to do and you can even by the hookups right at Walmart. I have one that plugs into my lighter and can power a 160 watt bulb. You can get them pretty big too. Some new trucks now come with this in them from the factory. The unit that will do this usually comes with plans or drawing of how you can hook the device up, power the alternator with a small gas engine like from a mower or something and make useful AC current. It won't be much, but it'll power like a drill or something in a pinch, maybe a bit more. No matter who you look at it, the alternator needs to be spun too. Otherwise there's no way to generate any juice at all. And you need a power source to excite the fields in the alternator - like a car battery.

    Well done , we can as well use a Magnetic instead of the Armature magnetic copper wire, so we don't need a Battery anymore, so, we'll have a big DC motor which generated an AC voltage, but of course we will need the Transformer continually.

    The two 12v leads act as a controller for the alternator. The higher the voltage on those wires, the more the alternator puts out. That is how the alternator controls its output when the car changes speed. With no voltage on the 12v lines, no voltage will be produced on the output. This is because there are no magnets in a car alternator. Just an electromagnet controlled by the 12v input lines.

    To run this contraption on a permanent basis, you will need a separate engine or an electric motor to power the alternator. The AC voltage will be provided by the transformer capacity, the watts will be according to the amperage generated by the alternator. This is just for experimental trials, not to light up an area as needed. Dec. 11/18.

  • @fordsrmaster
    @fordsrmaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You are not actually getting 120 volts from the alternator, you are only getting the 8.6 volts ac from the alternator. you are getting the 120 from the step up transformer. Also, the 120 volts is unusable by any electronic loads that require a steady 60Hz.

    Any electro mechanical generator is going to put out alternating current because the brushes cross poles of negative and positive creating a sine wave above and below 0. The alternator then must have a rectifier to filter out the neg or pos side of the sine wave thus direct current to charge the battery of the car.

      That will not work! Perpetual motion machines are not possible above absolute zero, thermodynamics are tough to overcome anyone that attempts this is a fraud by definition... In the real world we have heat and energy loss, nothing can create energy without creating heat, 2nd law of thermodynamics.

    If hooked to wind or water power,
    you would only need the initial kick
    from a battery. Then your 12 volts
    could come from a step down...
    Just like the old generator days.
    Give it a kick, it runs, no battery.

    This is an ancient shop hack. After you remove the rectifiers and seperate the winding you'll have created a 3 phase motor. Use a Y 208 3ph. to power it. Big ones (90A) output 5 horse power. Won't run on single phase house current

  • @terrylambing4689

    Yes agree the alternator does produce a 3 phase AC voltage, but where it gets a little complicated the frequency is unstable! The frequency won't have much effect on a light bulb, but I wouldn't try plugging a computer or TV to this! Normal house voltage of 120 vac operates at 50-60Hz Yes its designed to have high current output, the windings are wound with heavy wire but with less winding its a trade off with a lower voltage. I believe though with todays technology this can be over come to obtain a useable power source, something I'm going to experiment with!

      Drone Meets Nature: I don't recommend you use this *as shown* as an alternative household power. The output is three phase and your home is MOST LIKELY single phase. To constantly only use one phase puts lateral torque on the rotor and will ware out the bearings very quickly. As a water powered generator you would need to come up with a way to govern the RPM to a fixed value to keep it at 60 or 50 hertz. This would be 30 or 60 RPM depending on how many wingdings are used for output. An automobile alternator is intended to spin at 750 to 3000 RPM to generate maximum amperage. The best solution is to leave the automobile alternator as is and put it's 12 volt output through a 120 volt inverter. If you leave the rectifier on the generator, it is internally wired to supply the exciter coil with current and holds the output to a fixed voltage regardless of RPM. The battery is only used initially when the generator first starts to turn to energize the exciter coil. It is continually necessary here because the regulator circuit was removed. A capacitor could be used to "start" the generator. A car alternator can "start" with as little as 2 volts in the exciter coil.
      P.S. there are a rare few alternators that have a permanent magnet coil that supplies current to the exciter coil to initialize the exciter field. These don't need a battery connection at all and are commonly found on gas powered portable generators started with pull cords and some diesel powered generators.

      @garyr7027 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Transformers only increase or decreases ac voltages depending on transformer windings. They don't make ac voltages, they only change the voltage that's fed into it... and they cannot pass DC current.

    Great job. Very good explaination and demonstration! Have you tried to connect two additional transformers to the other 2 output phases...to produce 3 seperate 110v outputs? Have you tried to run wire from all 3 phased output terminals to the voltage regulator (which is laying flat on your desk) and connect the voltage regulator back to your battery to charge the battery...but the. tap ONE of the 3 phases with wires to your lightbulb? Doing this, you should be able to both charge your battery AND have an AC light bulb.

    What voltage can it produce without any battery power source. Only with residual magnetism.

    • @MrElectron
      @MrElectron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the strength of the residual magnetism 🙂

    • @marshalllhiepler
      @marshalllhiepler 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The residual magnetism is sufficient to produce a small output from the alternator.
      Then, the output is used to power the field windings, and full power (67 amps) is available, with sufficient mechanical input power.

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most alternators are purposely designed NOT to retain any residual magnetism (though certain types might). They are intended to have power from a battery when being started to initially energize the field winding, then once they are generating they use a small amount of the alternator's output to supply the field, becoming "self-excited."

    • @johngaltline9933
      @johngaltline9933 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really doubt the alternator is the limiting factor in this project. That tiny transformer going to be lucky to push 3 amps before it melts. For the cost of a large enough transformer to handle the 65 amps the alternator can deliver you're better off buying a nice inverter and a 130 amp alternator. As anyone that's tried to source them knows, big (high current) transformers are not cheap. As for the alternator it's self, most are going to be be good for a good 50,000 miles or more. If we do some loose math, we can say a car in typical use drives an average of 30 MPH while the engine is running, so that alternator, would last about 70 days of non stop running... at engine speeds. I have no idea what the intended use is here, but pulling the pulley with a string is not going to approach the 4000-20,000 RPM the alternator is designed for. If you had it being spun by a non-geared water wheel, for example, I'd expect the alternator to corrode and fall apart before the bearings fail.
      Also the regulator/diodes failing is the typical failure mode of alternators in cars, bearing failure is rather uncommon. I'd expect it to last several years at least.

      @@johngaltline9933 but if you're in a s*** hit the fan situation it would be a way to have power if you hooked it to a side shaft motor or a creek with a water wheel for a Time or a windmill or something along those lines just a good alternative for power for a short time

      An automotive alternator is a poor choice for such a project. You would be much better off using a small DC motor instead. You can find such motors in discarded treadmills or such similar exercise machines. They are a much better match to the power capabilities of human legs than an alternator, which requires far more power input from whatever is driving it.

    🔵 @ (0:17) seconds into the video you state that "An alternator produces DC"..... THIS IS INCORRECT!!!
    It's called an 'Alternator' because it produces AC ('Alternating-current') which is then rectified by diodes into DC to power the car's electrical systems.
