In our wind farm, which runs our home and farm, we use 20 - 24V/200A alternators with 24 12V 8D Truck batteries run in 24V cells through a 10,000A Inverter to 120V. On most days it supplies our full electrical load (except when welding...we use a diesel generator for that.). Great video!

The caveat is that we live in a valley where 12-105mph winds are constant. Wind generation using inefficient alternator is a no-brained and dirt cheap. Wind power is inherently unreliable in 99.9% of all applications and would be a gigantic waste of time and money for most people. We are adding solar grid for the underground retreat complex we are building. We anticipate the need to move our sheep underground during one of our routine 90+mph wind storms. During these winds all turbines are locked down with centrifugal braking systems and solar must take over to avoid frying the system with massive overload charges and cf-related mechanical disintegration. Our solar panels are locked down into 1/4”x2” angle iron frames mounted to 3”x6” steel girders using underground 2/0 cable leading to an underground battery bunker. When life gives you lemons...you still need power to run the juicer!

Back in days I had a 120 amp GM alternator on a 8hp Briggs and Stratton that fed 2 big diesel batteries that ran a 1,000watt 120v vanner inverter out of a ambulance that I would back feed from garage to house. That 120 amp alternator would work the 8hp pretty good!

It's great to be scientific for fun, but in practicality you may want to use a battery as a storage tank from the output of the alternator using an alternator with internally regulated output. This way the inverter can take startup surges better. Also running the alternator at slow speeds to reach your desired voltage while cranking up the amperage will overheat the alternator and melt the windings. FYI.

A brilliant idea to replace the resistive wire, measure the resistance of the rotor, calculate at 12v how many amps it will pull (example: for 2 ohms it will require 6 amps) and after calculating the current use LM7812 voltage regulators in parallel as many as needed , if you need 3 amps use 3 or 4 in parallel and voilà. The electronic voltage controllers of the car alternator make the control by the voltage of the rotor, keeping at 12v the output may be more stable or the subtle increase in speed does not raise the output voltage much.

You can build an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) which is a feedback control system that automatically adjusts the rotor DC excitation current so the rectified output voltage of the stator windings is regulated at the desired voltage (for example 11V-15V). The AVR is a current regulator, which can be a DC/DC converter or a linear regulator, equipped with a feedback controller, and takes power from the rectified output voltage of the stator windings and output the current to the rotor DC excitation winding.

    Hi Mr Electron
could i first just say thankyoufor a very interesting and informative video . However could you please answer the question that I and it seems quite a few others would like to know, I presume you are using the mains current to the motor purely for demonstration purposes? as Obviously generating a power supply by using another power supply would totaly defeat the object, so our question is,
what would be replaced by the mains supply? for example would you be able to run it from a windmill power system? or some sort of water wheel set up running the motor? what would be the minimum RPM the motor would need to turn in order for the alternator to produce a steady 220v ? Thank you once again

I am not sure but I believe that the alternator generates about 50v three phase and it is converted to dc12 by the diode pack. Would it be better to remove the diodes and use a star or delta transformer to achieve the mains voltage?
Definitely better with a battery in circuit to buffer the alternator load if sticking with the inverter.

Buy and add the in-situ voltage controller assembly, this is a part that attaches behind the alternator along with the rectifier assembly beside it. This will keep the voltage between 14V to 15V at any rpm or current draw.

Get rid of the AC to DC transformer as well and just plug in to the original power source and use about half the power you loose when converting it form AC to DC to drive a motor to drive an alternator that again converts AC to DC to then run the power through an inverter to change it from DC back to AC... This has to be one of the stupidest projects I have come across. So much power wastage.

This is genius, now try to connect the motor power to the inverter outlet. You might need to excite the alternator while switching.

Use a automotive break light bulb (incandescent) . I did this long ago to increase output and charge batteries. As the bulb gets brighter the resistance increases, making some voltage regulation.

Don't forget alternator running high amps!? Make sure you have a regulator in the circuit!
Some cars had regulator on the fire wall or near the distributor coil.
Some alternators have a regulator built in.
One day I'm gonna try this stuff too!
There has to be another way to enjoy creature comforts without a utility bill(lol!)!
Maybe take a tachometer & check your average rpm around the alternator in an actual vehicle! (Not talking about the RPM of the car engine!!)

would be a cool video to convert the alternator to create A/C 220 3 phase with out the inverter. This project has been done by me and my friends 20yrs and other people ago before that. fun project though. look it up

Quite interesting, really, but too complicated to understand (to me). I'd like to setup and test one, but I still haven't understood why/were to link the small battery, and all the rest of course.
    But thank you

It is fascinating. But my auto electrics in me as a mechanic is telling me different. With a 12v car battery to the alternator and a motor to put about 4krpm Into the alternator will get what your after car alternators do have to design to self regulate on 12v. As the output will change when the headlights are switched on for example. The battery drops down to 11v and the alternator is designed to compensate for this and pushes up to 13.7 again. I have achieved running massive amp output with fitting 2 alternators to a car before when I had to do a massive boot in car entertainment build. That had in total 6000w of Amplifiers. But when that bass kicks in it's essential to fit capacitors in there too.
I'm going to have a good go at making a generator without any mains feed at all. As I believe it is possible to power my own house without having to pay £20 a week for electricity. The savings itself are astronomical which would be a worth while project.

How to built rpm controller? Where do I get the inverter and how much is that?

Did you remove the voltage regulator from the Alternator and simply replace it with the "freehand wire you were using to increase and decrease resistance by lengthening and shortening the connection, and if so; why is the original voltage regulator not used?

@J-Seven Wow! Thanks man, your my "Hero" now I got to go back and watch the video again because I wrote my comment over 7 month's ago, and you answered it 7 hours age. But, better lat then never. "Thanks brother"

once you self excite can you power the 220 motor with the inverter? for self generation
