- Thinking about raising pigs for butcher? The first thing you ask yourself is what will I feed them to get the best and fastest results. You really can not beat this mixture. Fast weight gain and the pigs love it. Happy pigs means happy pork chops!
I use a used cement mixer to mix my feed does a far better job than hand mixing , easy to fill and it tillover to empty a real time saver.
Won't one need water when using a cement mixer
You can buy one will take about an hour to assemble from Harbor Freight and it can also be used for blending pasture or cover crop seeding mixtures. Works great. Can also be used for small batches of concrete for setting or making fence post!

We always took a 55 gallon drum mixed 50/50 corn Milo mix fill with water, place lid with holes punched with a screwdriver this allowed the gas to escape. Very happy pigs that had a great taste

Worked a deal with a lunch truck company we use to pick up all leftover food ,donuts , pastries , milk etc. Fattened those suckers overnight it seemed like . We'd give them some feed and stuff from garden but for the most part was lunch truck food.
My father told me a story about how they raised a pig once on nothing but fishmeal for christmas. He swears it tasted just like fish, said it was a very unique experience.

Update to this. We have been feeding our pigs this feed mix the barrow growing very well with it. The gilt not as good but still growing. I like the price difference as well.

Peanuts have 10 percent less protein (per pound) compared to Soybean. And, on average, peanuts cost 3 times more than soy. Peanuts may be a tasty alternative, but, never viable economically, especially if you are dealing with larger herds, like I do.

interesting about the soybean meal; your pigs have their feet in the trough which in my case my pigs leave lots of feed uneaten when it's "soiled". i use a deep hanging fence type feeder, one for each pig. it's deep and don't spill out and waste food and they can't get their feet in while feeding.
Hey Joe.. I'm thinking about raising feeder pigs. I'm very curious on how they handle during the winter months in northern Minnesota when it get -40 degrees.. how do you shelter them during that time of year. Or do you butcher them before the hard parts of winter hits.?
If any doubts about SOAKING your rolled corn, just try eating raw dry corn meal! When I really want a fat pig quick, me and the boys COOK a half 55 gallon drum of corn, wheat, pasta, any damn thing edible and out of date. A pig eats dry food and uses a ton of energy to digest it, wet cooked and fermented food and it goes right to the bacon! Look at those Oakie old spot hogs riding the electric carts at the local Walmart. They do not eat cracked corn dry.

I'd like to try this in Thailand, my wife's mother has a few pigs, which are fed a commercial bagged mix. Any idea of how much minerals to add as they are raised on a concrete floored pen.
Could you add water to the dry product and would it make a mushy slop?

feed piglets milk replacer 2 quarts a day for a month and half, gives them real good head start.
Your feeders are a real waste of feed - add some boards across the trough top and divide it so they can only get a head in and one in a hole. Then that box feeder is just not working at all. Tilt it back, raise it up, get gravity on your side. Finally, SOAK that corn in a seperate barrel and just sprinkle your protein over or in your bucket when taking it to the feeder. Try biting into dry cracked corn, and then into it after 3 days soak. You will see why your pigs will grow 2x faster and keep their teeth. Soaking and a partial lactic acid bacteria fermentation can double the protein and digestibility of the feed. With that many pigs you will halve your feed costs by going to a small milling operation and getting 1000 pounds of premix. Here, corn is 22 cents in a bag and 9 - 11 cents in your bin or their tote bag. I am wondering what keeps your pigs in that pen! Mine would be down the road in a heartbeat.

We get are feed from the back field mostly corn on the cobb in the winter and veggies in the summer not to mention good ol [cooked] sloop they like that the best. And man they have no problem getting big😂. But good video and where are there tails at is it the bread?
Are your pigs super fatty feeding this mixture? We did pigs on just corn one year and there was just too much fat. Does the protein from the soybean meal seem to counteract the high fat from the corn?
If you want to really get some tasty meat out of any pig, just feed them boiled potatoes and pumpkins for the last 3-5 weeks before slaughtering them.

u know that seems a little pricey for feed cuz I'm in KS and u can buy bulk 1000lbs of soybean meal and corn mixed with minerals in to get 16% protein ratio for a $100.00 at my local co-op and it's the identical consistency of urs and would cut ur feed price down so just letting u know cuz it might be a cheaper option for u and thanks for the great vid!

My pigs get ALL the stuff from the garden that is not eaten. This video I filmed most of it months ago and was just a video to let people know what mixture is needed to grow great pigs. So are you able to keep them in that pen without an electric wire? I ask because that has held us back from getting them, thinking they would just root under the panel and escape.

I raised a pig to butcher in 2016 I got him at 5 weeks and butchered at 27 weeks I fed him 950 lbs of tractor supply pellets and alot of scrap garden veggies but now Im going to look at 3 pigs and trying grow them fast to keep feed costs down and sell 2 to recoup some of the investment, my question is how old were these pigs when you first got them and about how much did they weight? And how much do you think they weighed in the video after having them and feeding them that diet for the 3 weeks? Thank you for the very informative video.

hi, if you added their weight ( 940-950 divided by 3= 315-316) do you know how much they eat in 1 day or 1 week? I'm trying to figure out how much a 100 herd of 5-600 lb pigs would need to eat each day, to be healthy, happy, and maintain their weight. Does anyone know?

Thanks for the information I'm going to try this for my next set of hogs right now I'm just feeding 16%hog feed have a since I got them and they were probably about 15-20 pounds when I got them I've had them roughly about 4 to 5 months if I use your method does it only take about 3 months to have them ready to butcher or 250 to 300 lb roughly we'd appreciate it if you let me know thanks
Feeding that feed blend should get your pigs to butcher weight at 54-5 months. If you hold them to 8 months, you'll be looking at a 325 pond pig. When I raised pigs, from the day they were born, to the day they reached 250 lbs could be as short as 5 months, but averaged about 6 months of age.

I am not sure Alan, I did not keep close records. I will tell you this though. If you raise your own and then bring them in to be butchered and processed you will basically spend the exact same amount as you would if you were buying your meat at the store BUT you will be getting wayyyyy better tasting meat and you will know whats in it. If you raise them yourself and do the butchering and packaging yourself you will be getting your pork at about 50 to 60% of what you would pay in the store and like I said it will be way better. Butcher and packaging is a huge percentage of "total cost", almost half. Doing it yourself might not look as pretty but it all tastes the same no matter what the piece of meat looks like and it will save you good money. Thank you. Joe
i don't know what commercial breeders feed, but pork from the store is nasty compared to what i kill.
For fattening hogs high moisture corn is what puts the weight on...Butcher hogs for commercial market average 240 lbs..meat buyers don't like them much bigger due to a higher fat content...

Yes, you need to give the pigs minerals. Having mud available to them makes no difference.

If you have access to raw cow milk, the pigs love it and gain weight (fat) fast. Just a suggestion. We are planning on getting pigs again and also a milk cow and a butcher cow (rotating) and we will feed the pigs the extra milk. We have access to buying raw milk from a dairy farm up here and the pigs love it and it really helps them gain weight.

I have looked into this a lot and bought a property to where I can keep pigs know. I have been watching prices also I noticed in my area the price of pigs drops tremendously about winter not sure why. but I was pricing them a month or so ago could get a 125 pound pig for about 50-60 dollars thinking about just getting a few right before winter and butchering them. I have never done that but I have to start somewhere.
iwantosavemoney Killing pigs unnecessarily is wrong. Would you like it if someone killed you just for money that they don't need, or for meat that they like but don't need? Why don't you take up vegetable/fruit farming instead?
I'm reading your note that you'll buy a few hogs at 125 lbs and raise them to about 275? That's a good plan if you can get them that cheap. Most farmers don't want to deal with pigs in the winter, so the price goes down, both on feeder pigs and butcher hogs in late fall.

could you give them whole corn? a bunch of my buddies are farmers. I could fill the back of my truck several times a year with corn they just dump on the ground cause it's not worth going back for a partial truck load. I just don't have a means to mill it
They will eat it but for some reason they do NOT like the whole corn. Like any other animal or person though, when they get hungry they will eat it. If its cheap and works for you it would be fine. They eat this up like candy. Thank you. Joe

You arrange for means of transport i.e. a pick up. You make it walk on a ramp onto a well secured pick up or lorry.
@@Jcmadad We built a skid from a sheet of 1/4 inch plate steel about 4x6 six feet with steel wire hog panels for the sides. Guided the pigs into the skid, closed the gates, and pulled the skid to where we wanted the pigs with a tractor. It looked really crude, really hand made, and everyone that ever saw it that had pigs outdoors built one of their own. We got the steel floor for free, so I don't really know what that would cost.
We used to feed our pigs red velvet cake. It was some the Mrs made, it was so bad it wasn't fit for human consumption. Really fattened the pigs up good

I use this same recipe. I make 100 lbs of feed at a time. I use 75% Cracked corn, 20% Soybean meal, and 5% vitamins and minerals.

I raise pigs and we get our feed in 4 different growth stages and it worked great. I believe it's almost a 4 to 1 ratio of corn to soybeans. They turned out great and taste awesome. I raised them for 5 months after I got them and they weighed 220 pounds hanging. You can also tape them to check their weights, it worked well for me.

i was just looking at some commercial pig feed today. $14.99 for 50lbs. it wouldn't be worth it to me. I have been feeding mine fresh produce scraps from the grocery store, a little feed bread(expired bread). i am raising kunekunes so they take forever to grow anyway. I might sprinkle some Joe's magic corn recipe for the youngsters. Thanks Buddy.

I buy it from an actual feed store. places like tractor supply etc do not carry it. Most feed stores have it especially if they make there own mixes because if they do they are adding soybean meal to some of them so they keep it on hand. Thank you. Joe
Don't feed soybean meal - feed soy bean concentrate. You need the minerals added to the concentrate. A local feed mill will have concentrate in 50 or 100 pound bags. Mix ground corn and concentrate in a 4:1 ratio.
When I asked at the feed store, they said this would not fatten them up? I’m so confused? I know even to much protein in people turns to fat. Isn’t it the same for pigs? Also, in Oregon it’s a 20$ a bag for 50#
I'm confused by your question, not knowing what 'this' is. $20 for a 50 lbs. bag for hog concentrate mix sounds high, but may be the current market. If you are raising a pig and using a corn/soybean concentrate blend, the corn to concentrate ratio should be 4:1 from 40 lbs to 120 lbs of pig weight (2 months to about 4 months of age for the pigs) and 5:1 until you slaughter them.

TRY FEEDING A 4 TO 1 RATIO OF CORN & CONCENTRATE ON FULL FEED
Larry Nigg: I was going to post the same point. This farmer is too thin on the protein part of the feed mix. 4:1 with CONCENTRATE, not soybean meal. He is wrong to think he doesn't need a vitamin supplement if he has pigs on dirt. Two seasons, and he will have depleted any natural source of selenium, a hyper important vitamin for the pig's nervous system. Also, cracked corn is better than shelled corn, but ground corn is better than both. Much, much easier to digest for the pigs. If you decide to mix water with the feed. plan on washing out the feed pans every couple of days to clean out any spoiled feed. Despite what you will hear on other channels, pigs, and the flavor of the meat you get, is almost exclusively controlled by the food they eat. The feed ratio described above will give you cuts of meat that are firm without being tough, flavorful and lean in the way you would want a cut of pork to be. Substituting other food stuffs such as table scraps or letting the pigs forage in the woods will affect the flavor of the pork you harvest, not always in the way you would want. Foraging in fields, especially hay fields, gives a slight gamey flavor some people like. I find table scraps problematic unless you are vary diligent to cull all meat scraps and only feed the vegetation to your pigs. Pigs are omnivorous and will eat meat, but too much and it taints the flavor of the pork.
Lastly, raising small groups of pigs like this, you DO NOT need any antibiotics added to the feed. Pay attention to your animals, treat them only IF they get sick. The open air and dirt will help them grow without the need for added drugs.
a 77% corn to 23% soy will give you 16+% protein content and that is good for a 20k-60k pig from 60k-100+ you should use 15% protein so 80% corn 20% soy. you really should add 300g of salt and 300g of some sort of multi vitamin mix together with dical p18-21 up to 2k can be added also. if you add then take same weight in corn away to keep it balanced. Then stand back and be in aww as they gain weight like a pro. good luck!
