I carried that lambskin casket to his grave and when I put it down, when I laid my son to rest I said God you have to take him because I cannot give him up. I truly thank you for your testimony. As a Christian, I have often tried to imagine how,... as a God-fearing and faithful Christian parent,... one could possibly be sustained,... in the loss of a child. I realize it can and does happen,... but I think it is beyond most people's comprehension,... that it is possible. It has always been beyond my comprehension. That said,... I have heard God's voice and I have experienced the "perfect peace" that can ONLY come from Him. In this way,... your testimony has truly given me a glimpse and encouragement that while I may not EVER be able to imagine or understand how my Father could sustain or heal me from such devastation,.... ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE with our God. Thank you for sharing such a personal experience and know that your testimony is certainly being used by God to impact the lives of others. Jesus has been my friend now for 52 years. Although I've strayed in the past, and followed after other things, serving myself, I found Him to be as close as a silent prayer. I find my walk with Him gets sweeter as time passes.

The Lord is always there for us, he has done wonderful things in my life. I am nothing without him. Thank you lord Jesus for all being a part of my life.
When Jesus says yes He is a good friend; and when He says no, He still is a good friend. Scriven accepted and lived that truth as few in the world. Because to say that Jesus is your friend when everything goes well is not big deal, but to say that Jesus is your friend when you lost two finances before wedding that's true love for the Master.
When it came to the part where he found love again, I was feeling joy for him, but then when she came down with pneumonia, and died, I actually said out loud, " oh, no!" Both of His ladies were very beautiful. I wonder if God had intended him all along to be single. I truly wish He had written some other things that would help singles in spiritual life. It is extremely difficult for most, to live absolutely purity. I love this hymn and often sing it to myself. I have walked through a deep valley for just above five years, but I know the Lord and his great grace has sustained me. I find myself experiencing deeper, more serious prayer and the desire to listen to great hymns that bring encouragement. One such hymn is "Be Still My Soul". Another is "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me". I am also acknowledging my complete helplessness and complete dependence on his timing and direction. "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths".
As a christian we have to not only walk on the mountain top but in the valley. Jesus said he would never leave us or forsake us, and as I look back can see that my precious LORD and SAVIOR was always there with me. OH WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS.

What a story to ponder on. When we are tossed by life billows.The Story of Joseph Sriven is deeply moving. He endures the death of his childhood love, a day before their wedding. For a second time, he endures the death of another woman he loved a couple of weeks before their wedding - What a Tragedy in his life. Inspite of it all he found extraodinary friendship with God which gave him purpose and hope. Indeed what a friend we have in Jesus.
When hardship came through along with broken marriage, sickness and unstable job when I listened to this song I felt the grace of God through eventhough bad things happen in our lives there hope for everything when He is there as long as we live.

So very true. After passing through a tragedy (much like the author of this hymn), countless friends left me, but one human friend walked into my fiery furnace of affliction and stayed with me. In the subsequent two years, I learned more about God than I could have learned in several lifetimes. Our adversity is indeed God's opportunity.

I read a story in New Yorker magazine(!) by a man who had gone to a very severe Catholic school. One nun and a priest were very strict..really scary, he said. This was my dad’s favorite hymn. At the age of 82, my dad died in 2008. The country version of this hymn was played at his funeral. I miss him so, and this hymn is his testimony!
I love that hymn, but I didn't know its story. Well, while watched this video, I thought about what faith is, and I came to the conclusion to have faith is to hope and love God even when we haven't answer, or even throught adversity.
What a revelation of God's authentic character! I've just come from a funeral of a 42yrs old father, husband and son. Moses battled with cancer for 2 years. I witnessed his family pour their wealth and support to save his life but God relieved him of the pain. Looking at the helpless and devastated father, kids and wife was painful. I'm consoled by this song knowing that amid the loss, Jesus is a friend who's closer than a brother. He'll never leave us nor forsake us, a present help in times of trouble. It is well.
When I got saved, I was at my wits end. I needed salvation, and everything it had to offer especially, PEACE. I had NONE from morning to night. Depression and torment was my daily CONDITION, to look forward to. I was AFRAID and lonely all the time. It got to the point, where I couldn't sleep, or eat, and then came Jesus. He came to see about me unvited! He came to see about me! I remember waking up out of my sleep singing, What a friend we have in Jesus. I am so grateful to God that, when I didn't know how to officiate for myself, He had mercy on me and sent His Son! I can never forget the kindness He extended to me, in one if the worst times of my life. He's sooo sweet. He's so tender hearted and caring. ABOVE ALL TRY JESUS! I know this. Truly enjoyed it. When I was teetering on the edge, God came. I was so alone. 2 surgeries, 1 bout radiation treatment, year later divorced. 3 months later father died, 11 months later mother died, 20 months later brother died, was having blackouts and unemployed. But as bad as it sounds, God was there and took me thru it. After mother died, 14 months later weed eating in yard, talking to God, I received the joy of the Lord. I mean make you smile everyday and peace like I had never known. I so glad I received it. I now look at Christians wondering why they don't smile. We have something so wonderful that smiling can't be helped.

My name is Gabriel (Angie is my wife) and when I was 15 in 1995 I was a lost and heavily into drugs, crime and a dead sinner. I first heard this song in Steven King's "The Stand" made for TV movie. The old lady sang it when Randall Flag (a demon) came to try to torment her. For some reason I instantly loved it even though I was into bands like Slayer, Pantera etc.. I didn't come to Christ til 6 years after. The Holy Ghost will speak to our hearts in the most unlikely places and I am so thankful this wonderful and anointed song was used to plant that seed in my heart in a Steven King movie of all places. He IS our best friend and I love Him and live for Him daily! I'm sure this means rewards are great because of the many souls reached because of this song!
I am sure my father never knew this story, but oh what a faith the writer. Tragedy at times makes us bitter and sometimes we think that only when everything is going 'right' that we are blessed. Do we see how many persons through the ages have been blessed by this man's pain. When we have pain take it to Jesus, He's the friend who will never leave you nor forsake you.

First I must say that more than any other title I may carry in this life, that being a Christian is the most important. However, as with others, I have moments of sadness and despair. My late son's birthday was very recent and as all mothers who have lost children I took a lonely stroll down memory lane. Twenty years since I last celebrated his birthday with him and missing him cuts like a saber. I have been in lonely spirits before but nearing 70 life seems more empty and joy is elusive. This night my heart was very heavy because of problems members of my family are having. I honestly felt broken hearted. I prayed to God for guidance and when I thought He had not heard me I turned my phone on to watch videos until sleep had a chance to find me. Then I discovered this beautiful, beautiful video about one of my favorite hymns. My tears of joy are still flowing as I type this. Truly, Jesus is our dearest friend and God hears and answers the prayers of His children. Thank you for posting this precious man's story and sharing the gift he left for the rest of us. God told me He couldn't give me to Peter because I belonged to Him. I later found the object of my heart wasn't a good man. God would not give me to someone He didn't think worthy I surmised. It is much better to belong to God. He holds my son in his arms and I will see him for all eternity. Have a blessed life here and a glorious life in the hereafter!

My great Grandfather Robert Donnelly sailed from Ireland to Ontario, Canada before 1852 and married Lucinda Thompson who was my great mother and grand or great daughter of the explorer & MAP MAKER David Thompson who was born in England . Robert and Lucinda had 10 sons and 2 daughters . One of their sons was my grandfather , Joseph and his son, my father married Clara Sheets . My mom, Clara sang gospel songs and her favorite ones were Amazing Grace and What a Friend we have in Jesus.
All the best hymns come from people who have lived through real life tests. That is why they connect and bring hope. I love how God has used them to reach me in my real life.

Having just been in Port Hope, Ontario last week - I did some research on Joseph Scriven - a very good man. Lots more info on Wikipedia. A tall obelisk was built upon his grave with the words from the song and the following inscription: This monument was erected to the memory of Joseph Scriven, B.A., by lovers of his hymn, which is engraved hereon, and is his best memorial. Born at Seapatrick, Co. Down, Ireland, Sept.10, 1819, emigrated to Canada 1844. Entered into rest at Bewdley, Rice Lake, August 10, 1886, and buried here. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

I was self-centered, ambitious and "successful" in education (graduated from a top university in China and later got M.A. degree in the U.S. I was also "successful" in business for 16 years. But, one day in human's end, I came to believe in the Lord. Among all the smart choices in my life, to believe in Jesus is the only beginning of wisdom. God did answer my prayers!

When Jesus says yes He is a good friend; and when He says no, He still is a good friend. Scriven accepted and lived that truth as few in the world. Because to say that Jesus is your friend when everything goes well is not big deal, but to say that Jesus is your friend when you lost two finances before wedding that's true love for the Master.
When it came to the part where he found love again, I was feeling joy for him, but then when she came down with pneumonia, and died, I actually said out loud, " oh, no!" Both of His ladies were very beautiful. I wonder if God had intended him all along to be single. I truly wish He had written some other things that would help singles in spiritual life. It is extremely difficult for most, to live absolutely purity. I love this hymn and often sing it to myself. I have walked through a deep valley for just above five years, but I know the Lord and his great grace has sustained me.
I find myself experiencing deeper, more serious prayer and the desire to listen to great hymns that bring encouragement.
One such hymn is "Be Still My Soul". Another is "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me".
I am also acknowledging my complete helplessness and complete dependence on his timing and direction.
"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths".
So was I, Had to go through the darkest time of my life from 2007 to 2015. That was when I found strength and comfort in Jesus.
As a christian we have to not only walk on the mountain top but in the valley. Jesus said he would never leave us or forsake us, and as I look back can see that my precious LORD and SAVIOR was always there with me. OH WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS.
'How Great Thou Art' and 'In the Garden' are 2 old hymns that always take me to church. Found this story from listening to 'Crying in the Chapel' by Elvis, also very tender song.

For a second time, he endures the death of another woman he loved a couple of weeks before their wedding - What a Tragedy in his life. This was my dad’s favorite hymn. At the age of 82, my dad died in 2008. The country version of this hymn was played at his funeral. I miss him so, and this hymn is his testimony!
I love that hymn, but I didn't know its story. Well, while watched this video, I thought about what faith is, and I came to the conclusion to have faith is to hope and love God even when we haven't answer, or even throught adversity.

What a revelation of God's authentic character! I've just come from a funeral of a 42yrs old father, husband and son. Moses battled with cancer for 2 years. I witnessed his family pour their wealth and support to save his life but God relieved him of the pain. Looking at the helpless and devastated father, kids and wife was painful. I'm consoled by this song knowing that amid the loss, Jesus is a friend who's closer than a brother. He'll never leave us nor forsake us, a present help in times of trouble. It is well.
When I got saved, I was at my wits end. I needed salvation, and everything it had to offer especially, PEACE. I had NONE from morning to night. Depression and torment was my daily CONDITION, to look forward to. I was AFRAID and lonely all the time. It got to the point, where I couldn't sleep, or eat, and then came Jesus. He came to see about me unvited! He came to see about me!
I remember waking up out of my sleep singing, What a friend we have in Jesus. I am so grateful to God that, when I didn't know how to officiate for myself, He had mercy on me and sent His Son! I can never forget the kindness He extended to me, in one if the worst times of my life. He's sooo sweet. He's so tender hearted and caring. ABOVE ALL TRY JESUS! HE WON'T LET YOU DOWN, AND YOU CAN COUNT ON HIM.

Heavy wooden harness that bind the necks of the oxen. The yoke makes the oxen obedient to their master to be beast of burden to bear heavy loads.
Jesus refers to the yoke we create for ourselves as we go down the road of life.
Our yoke is our Relationships, Success, Failure, Money, Health, Career, Drugs, Alcohol, Sex, Future, Stress, Idols,
Fears, Anger, Greed, Pride, Gluttony, Jealousy, and All Our Sins & Transgressions become our yoke to bear in life.
Until we finally reach a point we can’t take it anymore and we turn to the Lord and say;
Lord this burden I have created in my life has made me weary and heavy-laden.
What shall I do? There are no more cross roads in my life just a wall in front of me. What shall I do?
Just as sure as the Apostle Paul saw the light of Jesus on the road to Damascus
Jesus light still shines for us today.

I know this. Truly enjoyed it. When I was teetering on the edge, God came. I was so alone. 2 surgeries, 1 bout radiation treatment, year later divorced. 3 months later father died, 11 months later mother died, 20 months later brother died, was having blackouts and unemployed. But as bad as it sounds, God was there and took me thru it. After mother died, 14 months later weed eating in yard, talking to God, I received the joy of the Lord. I mean make you smile everyday and peace like I had never known. I so glad I received it. I now look at Christians wondering why they don't smile. We have something so wonderful that smiling can't be helped.

My name is Gabriel (Angie is my wife) and when I was 15 in 1995 I was a lost and heavily into drugs, crime and a dead sinner. I first heard this song in Steven King's "The Stand" made for TV movie. The old lady sang it when Randall Flag (a demon) came to try to torment her. For some reason I instantly loved it even though I was into bands like Slayer, Pantera etc.. I didn't come to Christ til 6 years after. The Holy Ghost will speak to our hearts in the most unlikely places and I am so thankful this wonderful and anointed song was used to plant that seed in my heart in a Steven King movie of all places. He IS our best friend and I love Him and live for Him daily! I'm sure this means rewards are great because of the many souls reached because of this song!
I am sure my father never knew this story, but oh what a faith the writer. Tragedy at times makes us bitter and sometimes we think that only when everything is going 'right' that we are blessed. Do we see how many persons through the ages have been blessed by this man's pain. When we have pain take it to Jesus, He's the friend who will never leave you nor forsake you.

First I must say that more than any other title I may carry in this life, that being a Christian is the most important. However, as with others, I have moments of sadness and despair. My late son's birthday was very recent and as all mothers who have lost children I took a lonely stroll down memory lane. Twenty years since I last celebrated his birthday with him and missing him cuts like a saber. I have been in lonely spirits before but nearing 70 life seems more empty and joy is elusive. This night my heart was very heavy because of problems members of my family are having. I honestly felt broken hearted. I prayed to God for guidance and when I thought He had not heard me I turned my phone on to watch videos until sleep had a chance to find me. Then I discovered this beautiful, beautiful video about one of my favorite hymns. My tears of joy are still flowing as I type this. Truly, Jesus is our dearest friend and God hears and answers the prayers of His children. Thank you for posting this precious man's story and sharing the gift he left for the rest of us. God told me He couldn't give me to Peter because I belonged to Him. I later found the object of my heart wasn't a good man. God would not give me to someone He didn't think worthy I surmised. It is much better to belong to God. He holds my son in his arms and I will see him for all eternity. Have a blessed life here and a glorious life in the hereafter!

My great Grandfather Robert Donnelly sailed from Ireland to Ontario, Canada before 1852 and married Lucinda Thompson who was my great mother and grand or great daughter of the explorer & MAP MAKER David Thompson who was born in England . Robert and Lucinda had 10 sons and 2 daughters . One of their sons was my grandfather , Joseph and his son, my father married Clara Sheets . My mom, Clara sang gospel songs and her favorite ones were Amazing Grace and What a Friend we have in Jesus.

Having just been in Port Hope, Ontario last week - I did some research on Joseph Scriven - a very good man. Lots more info on Wikipedia.
A tall obelisk was built upon his grave with the words from the song and the following inscription:
This monument was erected to the memory of Joseph Scriven, B.A., by lovers of his hymn, which is engraved hereon, and is his best memorial. Born at Seapatrick, Co. Down, Ireland, Sept.10, 1819, emigrated to Canada 1844. Entered into rest at Bewdley, Rice Lake, August 10, 1886, and buried here. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
